Overtopped does not equal Failed. In Katrina, they collapsed and failed. If they get overtopped, not nearly as much water will come in as if one of them actually collapses.

We bail out people that live underwater, we bail out companies that knowingly take on loans that cant be paid if interest rises, we hand out billions overseas.

We're a socialist state in denial.

Mayor Nagin is in a phone interview on the local channel 6 and he said there are two ships and one barge that have cut loose and are in the channel, knocking into the channel walls.

Well at least Bush learned an important lesson from Katrina he can apply to Gustav. When New Orleans is decimated, don't go a-partyin'. Stay at the White House and look like you are competent and give a shiat.

It's called scouring. Look into it. It's the reason that some of the levees failed in 2005.

Watching Fox News, I just thought I head them say something about a levee failing at 17th street. Does anyone know if that's accurate?

Look, if New Orleans is a profitable port due to the shipping through the Mississippi and the Gulf, plus the oil terminals there go hire some Dutch, have them install a kick ass system of seawalls, maintain them and call it good. New Orleans can pay us back over time with shipping revenues.

If not, don't rebuild ever again.

Umm overtop is fine. it's when they break it's a problem

Levees are built to fail. The question is always "when it fails" not "if it fails". Everyone knows this except southerners who "believe" in levees.

2008-09-01 10:46:34 AM
And the hurricane is even weaker than it was originally feared it would be.

Overflowing isn't as bad as breaching, but this going to put more pressure on the levees that aren't even as strong as they were before Katrina.

MTFBWY, New Orleans.

Industrial channel on New Orleans side of the upper ninth ward are overtopped, but still up, per onsite reporter on local channel 6. Couldn't pay me enough to be that reporter.

"It's amazing. It makes me feel really good that so many people are saying, 'We as Americans, we as the world, have to get this right this time,'" New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said. "We cannot afford to screw up again."

You couldn't afford to screw up the first time. Lives were lost. But that's no big deal if it teaches a lesson, right?

2008-09-01 10:48:31 AM
If the levees are being over-topped then they didn't break. So you can't really blame the levees unless you expect them to be 200 feet tall or something.

In any case, maybe we'll learn this time and NOT rebuild the part of the town that's below see level as that would be insanely stupid....naaaaaaah.

Same shiat, different day. Why do people move back there? It should be common sense that if you LIVE BELOW THE WATERLINE you could be flooded. FEMA should just say "move away. we have to take out most of new orleans.'

2008-09-01 10:49:31 AM
ha ha guy: Can we just NOT rebuild it this time?

Rebuild like last time where New Orleans was completely fixed and everything put right, I must have missed that. It has been several years and the city is still in need of massive repairs even before this hurricane hits.

2008-09-01 10:49:50 AM
Q. What do you call 50 drowning New Orleans gangbangers?
A. A good start
