Burn98: As long as the feds don't tell the first responders to stay out of town, like they did after Katrina

You're clueless. The Fed's didn't keep first responders out, Gov. Kathleen Blanco Democrat Louisiana did. Bush delcared a Federal disaster, but needed Gov. Blanco's permission to allow the Fed's to take over the operation. She refused for over a week because she didn't want to relinquish power and control. By the time she did, the situation was completely out of control.

The level stupidity and ignorance of the facts on this issue ( and so many others ) is stunning especially when you consider that there are people like this proud to run their mouths ( or finders ) even though they know absolutely nothing about the topic at hand.

Oh and they really have no idea what it is like to live in a hurricane prone area or why for gods sake anyone would choose to do so. And god knows that it cannot understand why some people have a tough time making the choice between staying and evacuating. It is not as if a no show by Rita in Houston still resulted in over 100 deaths. Just due to the evacuation.

But it ignores facts and statements made by those who live in the area in question. And don't question it. It makes it angry.

The feds told "freelance" first responders to stay out.

The feds told fire departments and emergency aid workers from nearby cities to stay out. They said that they (the feds) would handle everything.

I read an article that compared FEMA's very successful handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew with the disastrous handling of Katrina.

After Andrew, FEMA credited the first responders from nearby cities and states, who rushed in to help, for doing so much to avert what could have been a much larger disaster.

But FEMA told trained professionals from other states to stay away after Katrina. They were concerned that they would not be able to co-ordinate and control the effort if all these other groups came in.

I did that during Isabel. I wasn't going to pay $$$$$ for a hotel and I surely wasn't going to pay 1/2 that amount to share a room with another family of 4. So...up into the mountains we went. Camped out of the car (they slept in the car, I slept under a tarp). It wasn't a lot of fun but it beat depleting our savings for a week.

Speaking from that viewpoint, I don't think many of us are truly "gruntled" at how the whole thing was handled, or is STILL being handled, for that matter.

In that light, I think possibly you may want to stay with the cornflake theory so as not to muddy the waters any further on that issue.

Well, since you asked, my family and a contingent traveled to Biloxi-Gulfport, Mississippi ( mostly because the media was only reporting on NOLA and ignoring everyone else ). It was a devestating sight, like a bomb had gone off. What I was happy to see was the response from the citizens and their Government. Haley Barbour is a far better leader than Blanco and the response was far better and WAY more organized. Even the people, who suffered such sever devestation left before the storm, but came back and waited for NO ONE to fix their lives. We worked side by side with home and business owners who were trying to put their lives back together. It made the volunteerism worth while because we knew our efforts wouldn't be in vain.

So what did YOU do?

Absolutely not. FEMA made plenty of mistakes. My irritation is in the fact that whenever Katrina comes up,. it's always couched as a " Bush failure " when in reality the biggest failures happened early and were the fault of local and state Government. Because of those early failures, everything went down hill after that. By the time the Fed's got involved, it was already a disaster beyond compare. That's why I have been saying that Bush should declare Martial law and literally take over the state and the city. They should force people who refuse to leave to get the hell out, even if by force and tell Nagin to get lost. This way, at least he will actually BE responsible for what happens, or doesn't happen instead of being blamed for something he couldn't poissibly have fixed.

I helped work relief efforts in Houston and then worked at the NASA facility in East New Orleans for 5.5 months helping get shuttles back into space since 900 of roughly 2000 employees there were homeless and besides fixing the problems of the Columbia accident they also had the pleasure of fixing their lives.

During Rita I stayed at home and did not evacuate. I live north of the Heights in Houston and not in a flood plain near a Bayou so all was cool scrote.

I got to work and live with the folks over there and help my coworkers deal with their loss. Do my penis is huge. Just like your huge vagina. I tell you huge. See dammit, back to 4th grade again.

What you say is true. But it is still a " Bush failure ". You say yourself that FEMA make plenty of mistakes. Studies show that FEMA had done a much better job in the past. Somehow Bush let the agency slide downhill. Maybe putting Brown in charge was a mistake. Someone with actual emergency experience might have been better.

So even after you acknowledge all the mistakes make by local officials, FEMA still looks bad. And that happened on Bush's watch.

Is that hard to accept? Do you feel a need to defend Bush no matter what?

If by "freelance" you mean entire rescue companies from out-of-state, not to mention relief planes filled with supplies from Canada which had already been approved, and by "stay out" you mean "FEMA set up roadblocks preventing any movement into OR OUT OF areas like St. Bernard Parish (where Canadian rescuers were the first to arrive on the scene, one week after the storm.)", then I'll agree with your assessment.
