I think they meant near collision.

Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard...

Wouldn't that be a near hit? If they nearly missed, they would have hit each other.

A collision is a near miss.

2008-08-30 10:59:37 AM
""The Transaero 747 descended 200-300 feet after receiving an alert from its Traffic Collision Avoidance System,'' he said."

so hundreds of lives saved, because someone decided to go with the extra cost of the Traffic Collision Avoidance System... I guess it was worth it. spend 30 thousand, save 30+ million...

2008-08-30 11:01:27 AM
Since nobody seems to have said it, it was a near hit.

/first in reference!

A Delta Boeing B737-800 and a Transaero Boeing B747-400

I knew Boeing was outsourcing, but that's ridiculous.

Guffaw, guffaw... English language, YoU So CrAzY!
Wonder why people keep thinking the term "near miss" is somehow wrong.
The term "near" refers to the distance... how close something is, not the alternate meaning of the word i.e. "almost". And even if you argue that, the term is now an accepted figure of speech ( according to M-W was coined in 1940 ) by society pretty universally.

Don't over exert yourself on fark trying to be clever when there isn't anything to be clever about. There is plenty of 'teh funny' to go around. You're just going to hurt yourself.

/I bet parking your car on a driveway and driving your car on the parkway really blows your mind.

OK, I get the Top Gun refs, but how did we get from there to Abyss and Hunt for Red October? Did I near miss something?

So the part of HfRO where the jet that hit a ruskie crashes on the deck of the carrier missed you eh?

Dictionary.com:

near miss
n.
A narrowly avoided collision involving two or more aircraft, ships, boats, or motor vehicles.
A missile strike that is extremely close to but not directly on target.
Something that fails by a very narrow margin: Her campaign for the Senate was a near miss.

And it's fun to reference an over-the-top Fred Thompson line anytime there's something that could be construed as confrontation between the two Cold War powers.

That is some mighty impressive warping of reality you did there to make "near miss" mean that.

More proof that society is full of retards.

It was not a hit - it was a miss.

It was not the kind of miss that was far - it was near.

It was a near miss.

Now, "hot water heater" - that one I don't get.

FTFA: were one minute away from a mid-air, head-on collision near Puerto Rico

Not trying to be obtuse, but are they talking minutes as in time or minutes as in markings on the globe?

"All right, not a word of this leaves this room. There must 15,000 people in this airport and we don't need panic on our hands. We just bought ourself maybe two hours. After that, those planes with low fuel ain't gonna be circling, they are gonna be dropping on the White House lawn. McClane, is this what you've expected?"

The two aircraft "came within zero feet vertical and one minute lateral separation at an altitude of 33,000 feet,'' Mr Knudson said.

One minute? Planes go quite a long ways in one minute. Gee, my car can go a a mile in one minute.

Aircraft traffic controllers tend call "near misses" what the rest of us call "over a mile away." Of course it is a good thing that they do since any the consequences of a hit are so terrible and the speed which they happen is so fast.
