And that sure won't look like Obama gave 'em an ass whuppin', eh?

2008-08-29 01:31:02 AM
Well, they don't have a choice, really.

It's too easy to say "look, people are taking shelter on the Gulf Coast, AGAIN, and AGAIN, Republicans are hundreds of miles away celebrating."

At least somebody looked at the situation and thought gee, maybe that wouldn't look so good.

2008-08-29 01:33:17 AM
Okay, that headline made me LMAO.

+1

2008-08-29 01:35:21 AM
Yeah, maybe in a few weeks people will forget the 80,000 people watching one convention as compared to the 5,000 in Minn.

ragekage: And that sure won't look like Obama gave 'em an ass whuppin', eh?

They lose here, no matter what they do. They go through with it and NO gets futtbucked, then they're accused of fiddling while Rome burns. They back off, they look scared of Obama and the polling bump is going to be double digits as the DNC dominates the media cycles for another week or two.

I know that this is two parts optimism, one part schadenfreude, but this might be the year where we see the GOP completely implode.

All of Minneapolis is pre-sold already.

Of course they will proceed

Occam's Chainsaw: going to be double digits as the DNC dominates the media cycles for another week or two.

McCain announces his VP tomorrow right after lunch and pushes for talk of the RNC in hopes of avoiding whatever bump this week will have caused.

rocinante721: All of Minneapolis is pre-sold already. Of course they will proceed

Exactly. They've been planning this for eighteen months; you can't just re-schedule it like you'd do for a dental cleaning.

This is just fake "concern" noise.

In that case, let me give you the run down of the next MoveOn ad:

*Montage of New Orleans post-Katrina*
*slightly morose female narrator*

In 2005, as Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, where were George Bush and John McCain?
*cut to cake picture*
Throwing a party. In 2008, as Gustav threatens the Gulf Coast, where are George Bush and John McCain?
*cut to picture of convention floor*
Throwing a party. Do we really want more of the last eight years?

2008-08-29 02:00:55 AM
They won't but saying they might will make people think that it's more important to them than their convention.

And it wouldn't make any difference anyway. Bush and McCain will be partying instead of responding just like they did when Katrina hit.

2008-08-29 02:03:31 AM
I think this might actually work out to help the GOP. Watching McCain amble through a 10-minute acceptance speech would cost them a few votes. He needs to never, ever talk in front of a camera without handlers at his side.

2008-08-29 02:06:02 AM
You really took quite a hit a few years ago, New Orleans. It's a lot to ask, but, for the good of the country, could you handle a little hurricane memory refresher for us?

2008-08-29 02:11:07 AM
FTFA: The threat is serious enough that White House officials are also debating whether President Bush should cancel his scheduled convention appearance on Monday, the first day of the convention, according to administration officials and others familiar with the discussion.

Ah yes. Just an excuse for the GOP to prevent more hug pictures.

Occam's Chainsaw: Do we really want more of the last eight years?

They are screwed either way. Good. I don't want any chances of them getting another 4 years to finish annihilating the country.

2008-08-29 02:14:29 AM
The GOP will figure something out.

They are good at elections.

Its the whole running the country thing that they suck miserably at.

Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds,

What's the point? They have plenty of warning. FEMA is already in place. Nagin actually has an evac plan & buses on standby this time. The Democrats will be home from the prom, so they can watch the kids. If NOLA can't manage to get thru this one w/o mom & dad coming to the rescue it's probably time to cut the losses & move on.

You really don't understand the concept of a "natural disaster," do you?

2008-08-29 03:40:21 AM
The should think of delaying it until December.

Confabulat: You really don't understand the concept of a "natural disaster," do you?

It's the local governments job to prepare for the impending disasters that are foreseeable. My local and state government has plans for the inevitable major earthquake and what to do in the initial 3 to 5 days before any substantive relief can start to get here and beyond. NOLA and its citizens dropped the ball in 2005 by not thinking ahead.

Out here we get yearly mailings reminding us to flush our water heaters, make sure that we have at least 5 gallons of bottled fresh water on hand (and to use them to gather water from the water heaters after they are used up DRRRR), make sure that we have enough canned food for a week (and a manual can opener), that we have alternative cooking methods available (gas or charcoal grill) with enough fuel for a week, that we have a 1st aid kit and that we have some cash on hand (but not a lot. Stuff like that.

It's all common sense but people forget and get lax.

2008-08-29 04:17:04 AM
I agree completely, Barack would be a natural disaster for this country.

2008-08-29 04:20:52 AM
Maybe if we rename the hurricane "Ghalib" or "Ghassan", the Republicans will figure out a way to imprison it or deport it or something.

2008-08-29 04:28:33 AM
God's just going to delay the hurricane, then.

I think the praying backfired. Or God has one helluva sense of humor.

At the very least, they'll be able to refer to the torrential rains as "waterboarding".

So what you really mean is that it's the local government's job to try to prepare citizens to survive for a few days before the federal government arrives and takes over. Unfortunately it took Bush a bit longer to provide help to New Orleans.

Gustav means "staff of the gods". meaning god is going to take thy staff (Gustav) and direct his sheep (the religious) in a new path.

This is clearly a sign he hates neocons.

It's funny how all of the cities that Nagin doesn't run were rebuilt and prepared years ago, without all of the whining and race cards. If Nagin is good at one thing, it's passing the blame for his failure onto others. Something all Democrat politicians strive for.

2008-08-29 04:40:52 AM
The GOP just need more time to set up their next terrorist attack upon the U.S., you know, something that makes their 911 attack look like childs play.
GOPers are the fascist enemy of the U.S.

Brettster808: The should think of delaying it until December.

Step 1: Use Presidential powers to delay GOP convention

Step 2: Use Presidential Executive Order to delay General Election, claiming convention delay kept McCain from having a fair chance to present his policies

Step 3: Use Executive Order to suspend Constitution and remain in office after Jan 2009, and prevent Democrats to adding to seats in Congress.

????

Step 5: Profit (for GOP)

2008-08-29 04:44:16 AM
They didn't mention what financial implications any delay might have for the party. I'd be curious to know a ballpark figure on that to see if it's enough to have any impact at all on their budgeting for the campaign.

2008-08-29 04:44:55 AM
You know, I don't believe there is a God. If there was, I always contended I would hate the bastard. But if there is a God, and he said "Oh, you're praying for rain during Obama's speech, because obviously I couldn't fix a US election without YOUR guidance? Fine, have farkING HURRICANE DURING YOUR CONVENTION!"

Sucks for New Orleans, but it's quite, dare I say, ironic.

/Yeah, I know, not technically irony unless the hurricane hits the RNC directly

Wow, it all makes sense now.

God placed NOLA below sea level, to punish Ray Nagin for the black people and the gays.

FTA: Forecasters said the storm could strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 111 mph or higher in coming days, before hitting somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Texas.

Great job assholes, it's only 1,200 miles in between.

Be prepared all.

Say it loud and say it proud brother! The more boisterous the radical left is the more people will be scared away from the democrat party over the more rational and sane side. Preach "the truth" to as many people as you can, and make sure you let them know how much you hate republicans.

Thanks
-The GOP

P.S. As per the whole "fascist" thing, which party is looking to re-institute "The Fairness Doctrine" a ham handed attempt to squelch free speech, simply becuase the wrong political party is the most popular in one particular media? Which party's presidential candidate is threatening legal action towards stations who had the audacity to run a political ad featuring the actual terrorist who launched Obama's career, Bill Ayers (the guy who bombed government buildings and wishes he would have done more)? The true fascist live on the left. The right believes in the rights enumerated in the constitution, the left tries to shut up those who do not agree with them using the force of government.

jdmac: The right believes in the rights enumerated in the constitution, t

Since farking when? The "right" hasn't cared about the Constitution in years. People like you pull out that Constitution every time a democrat looks crossly at a handgun on the otherside of the world, but conveniently stuff it away again when your own party RAPES it to SHREDS repeatedly and unashamedly.

I am a libertarian(small l, not party affiliated) and I *actually* believe in the Constitution. You republitards can biatch about Obama this and oooooo constitution, but every syllable is the death rattle of your failed party.

Obama is still a douche though.

2008-08-29 05:16:07 AM
The Republican vision for America really is to let the place go to the dogs. They want a hurricane to destroy NOLA, because its only poor black people there anyway. If the poor get displaced by a hurricane, how will they be able to vote for Obama?

2008-08-29 05:17:33 AM
Meh. They didn't delay the convention in 2004 even though a good bit of the Florida delegation had to leave because a hurricane was bearing down on the state and they needed to get their homes ready for the storm.

Couldn't they just rent a different VFW hall or High School Gymnasium to hold all the the McCain supporters? Most local Pizzarias offer discounts if you order five or more pies, so it shouldn't bee too expensive to keep them fed.
