They're just being glib. They don't know the history of zoning laws, I do.

Nothing annoys me more then people who buy property and don't check the zoning.

After an inspection showed there were fluorescent lights in the bedrooms, Reiss said, it was clear Rhodes intended to use the property as an office, a use that township zoning did not allow.

Um, I certainly hope they had more damning evidence than that!

I'm not a fan of zoning boards either, but we get calls all the time from people who want to build on their property. They never bothered to look online to see what that property is zoned and get upset when we tell them they can't do that with their piece of property.

I would think that if you're going to spend a bunch of money on property that a person would do their research upfront.

This is becoming a trend. I thought for certain that the article was about this creep from Chicagoland.

Do you think that the presence of the Co$ in central Florida creates some kind of quantum space fluctuation that manages to increase the stupidity level in the people nearby? Would be one explanation for why we end up having the [Florida] tag...

It's not a "home office", it's an office. He was installing florescent lights in the bedrooms to turn it into an office space, and he doesn't live there. It's a separate property from his home.

I wouldn't want my neighbors to turn their houses into office buildings either. The guy is being an asshat, and probably decided that since he couldn't get the zoning for an office, he'd go with a church that's notorious for aggressive legal action.

I know people who used to serve on that Townships zoning board. And all these people had to do was go to a meeting a petition for a re-zoning, then go get the proper permits. Had they tried to do it the legal way first, maybe they wouldn't be in this mess. But when you start secretly converting your residential property, one that's already on the town's radar, into a business, don't expect them to be all nice too you when you're caught...

Here's his problem (FTA):

"On the application, Wilson is listed as a principle in the church."

principle principal. There. That's better. Now you are a legal person, not just an ideal. That's some great reporting there, Lou (or some great writhing there, A. not Rhodes Scholar)

The article doesn't specify where in Plumstead this is. But parts of Plumstead are zoned rather weird, so you might have a residential house on the same 1/4 mile of road as a 7-11 and a mini-strip mall. So if that's the case, I don't see why he couldn't legally get the zoning changed from residential to commercial...

That becasue the zoning board is made up of Scientologist, they pretty much run for every small office there is in every election.

2008-08-27 11:33:52 AM
ok - headline is misleading...the guy doesn't want a home office - which is almost certainly allowed by zoning; he wants to turn a home into an office and THAT is quite a different issue. So, now, he's just being spiteful with the zoning board with the whole "i'll turn the property into a church and then i won't have to pay property taxes either..."

he should just suck it up sell the property or rent it to someone who will actually live in the neighborhood.

Area is zoned residential.
Offices are not a permitted use in residential district.
Churches are a permitted use in residential district.

I don't see what's so difficult or farkworthy about this.

I have a funny story about a homeowner's board. There's a lawyer who was habitually late in cutting his lawn, and the HOA was constantly 'reminding' him to cut it, as the height of grass was against the code. It would get high, he'd cut it, and the cycle continued. Finally after a couple of seasons of this, the HOA got fed up and threatened him with a mechanic's lien.

He promptly filed paperwork to have his property declared a national wildlife preserve. It's awesome, he legally can't cut his lawn now, and there's nothing the HOA can do about it. There are signs in the lawn, 'watch for this type of bird' etc. It's now completely overgrown and in the middle of an otherwise nice, upper-middle class neighborhood.

This house is just a few miles from my home in Southern Maryland, I'll drive past it from time to time for a chuckle.

Scientology, yes. ScientologISTS, no. They're just people who got suckered into one of the biggest scams of the century.

My opinion is, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody, believe whatever the fark you want. Unfortunately, the Co$ seems to have quite a bit of blood on its hands.

In this case they're using "principle" as an adjective, as in "a principle member", only they're dropped the member part. I've seen it used this way often.

Well here comes yet another mass internet nerd intolerance attack on Scientology. It's amazing that so few of you even know what you are talking about, yet wish to criticize it. Scientology helps thousand's of people overcome serious life problems and become happier and more successful, yet it is constantly under assault from certain forces who have their own motives for suppressing the "competition" that Scientology represents. I would not be at all surprised if those groups have paid agents here on Fark (as well as the rest of the Internet) deliberately seeding hate and lies against Scientology and Dianetics. It's happened in the past - the Inquisition tried to suppress alternative ideas - and it will happen in the future.

If you don't understand or like Scientology, leave it alone and respect it's rights. It harms no one, benefits thousand's and has a right to exist.
