How about the Democrat mayor of New Orleans screwing up royally during and after the hurricane hit? How about the Democratic governor totally farking up, and not responding to Fed requests for hours, even days? Sure FEMA didn't respond as well as they could, but let's remember the first responders in these situations should be the LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS. And in Louisiana's case, a certain "party of the working people" screwed them over then blamed the Federal Government for it.

Wake up. Please, wake up.

Hey, I hear there was an earthquake in China. I'm sure that's GW Bush's fault. It's raining here today. Damn - just as I figured, GW Bush and the Republicans caused that water to fall from the sky. Damn them to hell!

If the Corps of engineers would let the Mississippi take its natural course, it would quickly run into the Atchafalaya River and completely cut off New Orleans as a city necessary for its large port. I suggest we let nature take it's course, let the river move, and build a new port around the mouth of the Atchafalaya/Mississippi. Let the massive shortage of jobs depopulate New Orleans naturally (of course the people that most need to leave don't work anyway, but still).

This idea made a lot more sense when I was drunk last night.

I wonder what the memorial in Iowa will be? You know the flood that happened within the last 4 months and caused billions of dollars of damage. The same flood that the entire congress has basically given the middle finger to?

The only memorial here will be a well thought out regional answer to flooding. Will most likely include some new levees and some spillways....probably won't allow people to rebuild in certain areas. And we will most likely send the corrupt to jail rather than elect them to office(assuming we catch them).

"We're playing everything by ear. We'll sit down with a big sigh of relief, whenever and however it's completed," said Minyard. He said obstacles as slight as a day of rain could cause the deadline to be missed.

Pretty typical. We don't know when or how it's going to get done, but we'll get it done eventually. I would think they would have planned this with to allow for a few days of rain during the construction. It sounds like another piss poor job performed by city officials in the chocolate city.

Officials Say Reports of Rape and Murder at Katrina Evacuation Sites Were Exaggerated
By MICHELLE ROBERTS
Associated Press Writer
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ On Sept. 1, with desperate Hurricane Katrina evacuees crammed into the convention center, Police Chief Eddie Compass reported: ``We have individuals who are getting raped; we have individuals who are getting beaten.''
Five days later, he told Oprah Winfrey that babies were being raped. On the same show, Mayor Ray Nagin warned: ``They have people standing out there, have been in that frickin' Superdome for five days watching dead bodies, watching hooligans killing people, raping people.''
The ugliest reports _ children with slit throats, women dragged off and raped, corpses piling up in the basement _ soon became a searing image of post-Katrina New Orleans.
The stories were told by residents trapped inside the Superdome and convention center and were repeated by public officials. Many news organizations, including The Associated Press, carried the witness accounts and official pronouncements, and in some cases later repeated the claims as fact, without attribution.
But now, a month after the chaos subsided, police are re-examining the reports and finding that many of them have little or no basis in fact.

Milkbeer: Or is it going to be a statue of a group of guys gangraping a 12 year old in a bathroom stall?

No. This is a memorial of Katrina. The other thing happens without the necessity of a hurricane.

People, people, people. I think we can ALL agree that there was plenty of fail to go around on a federal, state, local and personal level.

However, the personal, local and state fail would never effect us if there was a disaster where we live, while the federal fail would. This is why we harp on Bush's fail.

The levees were under the authority of the Army Corps of Engineers. That money didn't go to the local gov't.

And you ignore the response to the disaster. Or the lack thereof.

And as for being below sea level, the Dutch seem to do just fine - they just happen to elect competent national leadership.

2008-08-27 10:08:03 AM
Because:

1. Bush stupidly built New Orleans lower than sea level.
2. Bush designed the levees inadequately.
3. Bush told the people of New Orleans to ride out the storm where they were.
4. Etc.

It does make sense. If a disaster hit my city (we'll say terrorist attack because no snow storm could every cause that level of devastation), Ray Nagin, Kathleen Blanco and the citizens of New Orleans would have nothing to do with my city's attempts to deal with the situation.

George Bush and FEMA, however, would. Therefore, I am most concerned with HIS fail, because it could directly effect me.

Look, the real point is that New Orleans is a lost cause. It was farked up long before Katrina. On a side note, they should consider building the memorial in the form of a strong levee.

New Orleans is poorly cited to put it mildly, and it wouldn't have mattered who was president, just as it won't matter who's president next time it gets flooded by a hurricane. If the people of New Orleans insist on living below sea level in hurricane alley, why should everyone else blubber about it when they end up in the drink?

You mean that snowstorm where almost every single person decided to leave work at the same time? Right when the storm hit the hardest and the streets were to packed for any snowplow to get through? That storm?

Look, Mumbles is a joke, but there was NOTHING he could of done in that case. That was a PERSONAL fail, and it falls directly on the city of Boston.

this is taken directly from the 2008 Democratic Party Platform:

"We will partner with the people of the Gulf Coast to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina and restore the region economically.
We will create jobs and training opportunities for returning and displaced workers and contracting opportunities for local businesses to help create stronger, safer, and more
equitable communities. We will increase funding for affordable housing and home ownership opportunities for returning families, workers, and residents moving out of unsafe trailers. We will reinvest in infrastructure in New Orleans: we will construct
levees that work, fight crime by rebuilding local police departments and courthouses, invest and hospitals and rebuild the public school system."

This is on top of the Billions we have already spent.
