With a style that relied on being contrarian no matter the topic, readers turned to him as much to disagree with what he had to say than agree.

Here on the internet, of course, we just call that "trolling"

Adapt or die, newspapers; adapt or die. I'd miss the occasional Saturday paper filled with sections A thru Q, but its incredibly inefficient nowadays to produce a daily paper with the web available. Plus, it saves god knows how many trees from being mulched into newsprint.

I don't get the Mariotti hate. The man told it like it is. Maybe everyone else wants a Pollyanna but people need to be knocked down a peg once in a while.

He's a grenade lobber. That's not 'telling it like it is' that's 'being an ass.'

gopher321: but its incredibly inefficient nowadays to produce a daily paper with the web available.

Problem is, lots of people still without laptops to get to the web when they're out having coffee or whatever. Then there's the net access issue. And for people who take a train or bus into work, there's that to add to it.

He had a good gig at the newsaper. Then after 17 years he noticed the internet. While hanging out in China on the newspaper's dime, so the paychecks werent bouncing. Now he wants to write for the net. Because everybody knows how overpaid internet sportswriters are and how much fame and glory and unlimited access they enjoy.

Call me a truther and buy me a tinfoil hat...but I think that there is more to him leaving the paper than just his discovery of online sportswriters.

He frequently doesn't "tell it like it is," especially on his TV gig. Offering up contrarion opinions is fine, as long as you can support them with more than hearsay and logical fallacies.

One of the things Chicago sports fans DO agree on is that Mariotti is a total douche. Good riddance to an egotistical hack.

2008-08-27 08:54:15 AM
Let me get this straight: he goes to Beijing to report on the Olympics for a newspaper, gets sand in his vagina about how most of the "journalists" there were not reporting for newspapers but websites, bemoans this fact and throws subtle jabs at these "online journalists" while resigning from his job at a newspaper, and then goes looking for a job reporting for a website??

So, in addition to being a pretentious douchebag, he's a hypocrite to boot.

I think you are being a bit harsh with your description of the situation. I read it as "he's seeing the future not in newspapers, rather in internet reporting" and he's getting out now, before it gets really bad for newspaper reporters.

I don't like Mariotti anymore than most do...but IMO it's a smart move on his part...although I wonder if he could have negotiated a combo deal with the Sun-Times where he does his newspaper gig, while also moonlighting as an internet guy. I know the NYT is exploring this model with a number of their high-profile writers and it seems to have some traction.

Newspapers have to evolve and think differently about their product, their staffing, etc. or they will die.

We only get the Sunday paper anymore and that's mostly for grocery coupons and "what's going on in SE Michigan" stories...and quite frankly if Mrs. OMO and I tried...we could probably get all that info and more via the tubes.

This is a great day for Chicago. Let him be some other city's festering hemorrhoid of talentless douchebaggery.

While he's right about newspapers...he is still an ass clown and a horrible columnist that is gutless and scared that Ozzie Guillen will one day beat him down.

I hope his fear comes to fruition for that would be a great day.

I'll farking kiss Ozzie is celebration to this one and all you ethnocentric homophobe idiots can gawk and scream to your content.

I think Jay was worried he'd have to try to fling shiat at another White Sox world series victory and he just didn't have the guts to do it again.

/Oh yeah I said it

Thank GOD this idiot is gone. I REALLY hope he dies in a fire. While being molested by an over zealous prison inmate.

Really.

/Drinks a beer to celebrate
//Can't wait to see what Hawk says about this during the game tonight

Nothing's more terminal than reading Peter King's 85 pages of horseshiat every Monday morning on si.com (other than listening to/watching his fatass speak live), so I'm not bothered by Mariotti making the transition to the web. King's even worse on the radio - I heard him on Sirius NFL this morning and he mumbles and stammers worse than Dubya trying to complete a sentence.

As long as Mariotti doesn't start rambling about coffee and travel annoyances while gagging on Peyton Manning's cock, he'll do just fine.

/disturbed but somewhat relieved at the lack of Ozzie's homosexual incest World Series photos in this thread

Who?

2008-08-27 12:08:17 PM
Compare:

Jay Mariotti says newspapers are a dying breed, we need to accept this and embrace the future - web "journalism".

Howard Stern says terrestrial radio is a dying breed, we need to accept this and embrace the future - satellite "radio".

This should end well for Jay.

// can we lock him and Paige and Bayless and Kornheiser on a bus and park it in the middle of the Mojave during summer?

2008-08-27 12:34:54 PM
Dr Dreidel: Howard Stern says terrestrial radio is a dying breed, we need to accept this and embrace the future - satellite "radio". pay $12.95/month to hear his censored terrestrial tapes every day while he vacations with his horsefaced "model" girlfriend.

Wow. Some of you guys really have way too much emotional investment in a columnist for a newspaper.

Effin relax.

Okay, I LOL'd at that. Mariotti was paid to write negative columns, to garner a reaction and to get people to buy papers. There are countless more Mariotti's writing for rags all across the country. Mariotti and Skip Bayless are two peas in a pod, and get a lot of hate simply because they are visible.

I'm sure you can look at any local paper and find at least one columnist that does the same thing as Mariotti and Bayless do but aren't on TV and thus far less recognizable to the masses.

I bought him a beer at a bar in Boston last year. It was a brush with mediocrity.

I've never been a big fan of Mariotti on Around the Horn; in fact, as he and Woody Paige often butt heads on the show, my opinion is usually in line with Paige's. But, I can see where he's coming from. You know, being used to one way of doing things, getting so set in your ways, and then being terrified of change. Something about old dogs and new tricks.

/it's an illusion, Michael
//tricks are what whores do for money
