Republicans are again casting the opponent as out of touch

I was just telegraphing such a notion to my cousin in Altoona.

2008-08-26 09:02:56 PM
Why was that? Because day one was spent honoring the greatest living Senator, who's fighting a serious illness, and humanizing a smeared candidate?

Oh yes, yes, keep going, righties. Four days of "OMG TAX CUTZ!" will not win you this one.

You don't think the cable news networks are trying to play up the Hillary drama? Watching CNN you'd think the Dems were irrevocably divided and 50,000 50-year-old waitresses in Hillary T-shirts were laying siege to the convention building.

At least the quality of the headline matches the quality of the reasoning.

I haven't seen anything go wrong yet.

The convention has been going perfectly according to plan, there hasn't been any drama, the only mention of Hillary skanks has been from republican pundits drawing controversy out of thin air, just like Subby here.

Of course the neocon Fark admins flailing around close their eyes and PRETEND things are going horribly and print this crap out faster than some dipshiat blogger can make it up.

Great farkin' work guys.

Instead, he can pose as a maverick who more than once has challenged Bush.

Except for when he voted with him 95% of the time.

Partisan: You don't think the cable news networks are trying to play up the Hillary drama?

Clearly.

The MSM wet dream is 269-269. A close race equals $$$$. Since Obama is more popular, they are dragging him down to make him equal. Once McCain gets any kind of a lead, they will knock him down just as hard.

Why was that? Because day one was spent honoring the greatest living Senator, who's fighting a serious illness, and humanizing a smeared candidate?

The first two are not relevant. As for the third, the point is that the Democrats planned on Obama going into the convention with a 10-20 point advantage on Bush and instead find themselves tied with somebody other than Bush and fighting on enemy territory. Call Obama smeared or slimed or justly exposed, he's still in a close fight.

I don't agree with all of the article's analysis but it was worth a read to make me ask myself why I don't.

I guess that is why they are trying to hold the roll call vote in their hotel rooms. That's what you have to do when your party is not confident of its presumptive nominee. Judging by McCain's recent surge in the polls after Barack's European Adventure and the Biden VP selection, I can see why.

Yes, yes, yes, we get the narrative set by the "serious" media already:

Republicans get to go shamelessly negative against the Democrats, and the media crows about how they're so good at it and how it "resonates" with the American people.

Democrats have to be "above that sort of thing" and even though the media just got done explaining how negative attacks work so well on the American electorate, they then soberly explain about how that's "not what the American people want" when the Democrats try to match the aggressive tactics of the Republicans.

Perfect example FTA:

"He needs to change the terms of trade in this election, to reframe it so that he's no longer answering, "Is he one of us?" - but persuading his fellow Americans that it's time, at long last, to put that question behind them."

Now, the author, I'm sure, KNOWS this isn't going to happen. Obama and his campaign, as good as they are, can't do the work of roughly a generation in three months. But he's (and most in the "serious" and "beltway" media) going to demand they shut up about poor, victimized John McCain and get back to the fluff, anyway.

It's especially ridiculous having just followed this statement:

"The US media go along with all this. There is a starting assumption that Republicans are, by definition, solid, patriotic all-Americans. It is Democrats who have to prove themselves. Thus the press recycle endlessly Obama's reference to the price of arugula - but almost never mention Cindy McCain's preference for the private jet."

Welcome to the BACKLASH. You libs really didn't think that this worship of Obama, the super-hero and rock-star swooning, the press sucking Halfrican-America cawk for almost a year, wouldn't finally reach a breaking-point? Now Obama is going to have to stand on his merits (which frankly are pretty thin and more than a little suspect).

Every election, this cycle repeats itself. A good hand over-played, over-exposed and eventually run into the ground. Thankfully neither the press nor the libs (excuse me, progressives - an ideology so bankrupt it had to change it's name) never learn.

Didn't you people drive the kings out at gun point to create a more perfect union, one in which political leadership was decided by the democratic process rather than being the appointment of a Consul by the Senatorial classes?

My point exactly. You can't spend the better part of a decade calling people idiots and blaming them for everything including a rainy day, and then expect them to turn around and vote for you come election time. It might be fun on the lefty message boards, but people do remember how you make them feel and they will punish you for it when they vote. Count on it.

Conversely, it must be extremely easy being you. Being ignorant and obtuse is always easier than being intelligent and informed.

The day I see a single Republican post a single rational argument on this board is the day I'll start taking anything you have to say seriously. All I EVER see from the right-wingers around here is trollish stupidity. I know what Obama supporters believe in- an end to a pointless war, health care for people that need it, a return to sanity after eight years of having the Constitution and our personal liberties raped... but the only thing Republicans seem to be saying is "DAH-HUR, WE AIN'T VOTIN' FER NO DARKIE". No, seriously. Post one goddamn thing that's actually relevant to the election. I triple-dog dare you.

Funny, it seemed to work just find for the Angry Right during the 1990s. The demonization of liberals, blaming them for everything from big government to moral decay, seemed to work wonders when it came to getting Bush elected. The pendulum seems to have swung back the other way...though without a cock suck to focus on, perhaps the public just doesn't care all that much.

After all, it's not their kids dying on the other side of the world, it's not their wallets being stretched due to insanely high energy prices, it's not their house being foreclosed. Bah, who am I kidding? Even if it is they themselves suffering, none of those things matter just as long as they can stick it to the 'libs'.

And you wonder why people think so many on the right are stupid.

Believe it or not, if you act like an idiot, people will treat you like one. And for the record, I spent most of the last decade as a Republican. But that was back before the Republican party became synonymous with hate-mongering, anti-intellectualism, racism, and nit-witted stupidity. Let's take you for example. You have yet to say a single thing that's in any way relevant to the election. You just keep gibbering about "you can't call people idiots blah blah blah", as though perhaps you're ENTIRELY unaware that the Republican party spends most of it's time calling people a lot worse names than "idiot". It's the Republicans running around calling everyone fags, hippies, cowards, traitors, and every other moronic name they can think of.

So basically, you're only here to be an idiot. You have no clue what any of the issues are facing America, and you have no idea what Obama (or probably even McCain) stands for. You just want to whine about the fact that "Them Libruls are callin' me stoopid". Well, maybe if you and your asshole compatriots would stop calling everyone else homos and communists, we wouldn't have to call you stupid.

Corpus Delecti,

Thank you for proving my point. "Obtuse". What a big, exotic word that is. I feel stupid now. "Right Wingers". Don't you mean "Neocons"?

"Darkies". You racist prick. Show a little class. We Repugs prefer "Nhigger!".

The day I see a single Republican post a single rational argument on this board is the day I'll start taking anything you have to say seriously. All I EVER see from the right-wingers around here is trollish stupidity.

Again, thanks for proving my point. Lefties are soooo much smarter than Repugs AND they are not racists.

I triple-dog dare you to establish a health care system for ALL the people that need it. You'd bankrupt this country. I triple-dog dare you to admit that just because a Repug does not vote for "Darkie" that he or she is not a racist. I triple-dog dare you to say that Obama represents NOTHING as far as "change" is concerned.

I triple-dog dare you to come up from your parents' basement and see what the real world is all about.

From the article: As the California strategist Bob Mulholland told me, straining to be heard over the convention house band: "If George W Bush was seeking re-election, we'd be 20 points ahead."

Wrong.
