hero?

excuse me, I am leaving this thread now.

Hey, Torch? Give a web head a lift?

FLAME ON!

2008-08-23 10:36:41 PM
Or more accurately, people are desparate and scared and looking for some form of comfort when unexpectedly faced with their own mortality. Death-bed converts are never sincere.

2008-08-23 10:45:36 PM
Yeah, because the space occupied by a chaplain couldn't be better used by some more medical equipment or another EMS person.

Aarontology: Yeah, because the space occupied by a chaplain couldn't be better used by some more medical equipment or another EMS person.

Depends, I might be able to feel better if I was allowed to throw the chaplain out the back of the ambulance.

Hmm. Good point. I probably would feel a bit better from shouting "Stop trying to save my soul, and stop the damned bleeding!" and then flailing about until I kicked him in the head.

I also wonder how long it will take before they pick up an injured person who does not subscribe to the faith of the chaplain, only to be prayed upon anyway.

That would be my thought. If I was that bad off, I would rather have someone who was more concerned with my time here than with my time hereafter...

Not to mention this is a lawsuit waiting to happen, since the job of the ambulance service is to care about the body, and not the spirit.

Hero?!

2008-08-23 11:26:51 PM
Mm. When I was training to be EMS, I went and got ordained too. So I could provide medical care to the injured and comfort to the frightened. Only if they wanted it, of course.

Marcus: "I rebuke the spirit of drugs in the name of Jesus. What's his name?"

Drummer: "I.B. Bangin'."

Marcus: "What you mean I.B. Bangin'?"

Drummer: "I.B. Bangin'!"

Marcus: "What the hell kind of name is I.B. Bangin'?"

Drummer: "I don't know his real name."

I.B.'s Girlfriend: "It's Frederick Smith."

Marcus: "Okay, Freddy..."

I.B.'s Girlfriend: "It's Frederick."

Marcus: "Okay, I.B. Bangin', we're gonna bring you back from the dead. "

Might be the last thing I want to see in an ambulance. I think I'd prefer to have an Elvis impersonator or a drag queen converting me.

Chaplains to begin riding on Pennsylvania ambulances. "People are often most in need of conversion cardioversion when they are badly injured or unconscious"

fixed that for the whole state of PA

Just what we need, another jackass getting in the way while we are trying to provide care.

when unconscious is about the only time I'd refrain from interrupting a chaplain...

don't knock it, badly injured or unconscious are how I have found my best dates.

Why'd you come in? To announce you're leaving?

Chaplains in medical situations (like hospitals, ya know?) stay out of the way until they're wanted or needed.

Regardless of what you all believe, there's still a contingent of people that would find a chaplain to be a comfort. Not for conversion, but to pray with them.

Yeah, most people pray. And no matter how stupid *you* think it is, it still *is.*

2008-08-23 11:31:38 PM
I can just see it now

::reverend stands over patient while the ambulance is rock'n on the way to the hospital::

"The Power of Christ Compels you! The Power of Christ Compels you!"

"Will you convert, answer me now, will YOU convert!!!"

patient "Oh yes yes! Whatever you say, just let the medic do his work, please, arrrgh!"

2008-08-23 11:32:10 PM
and if they're mainlining me with demerol I may even listen

2008-08-23 11:33:10 PM
Ohh great, now they are preying on the sick and vulnerable, not just the stupid and naive.

ingeneri.files.wordpress.com
Now if this is the chaplain, I'd probably convert.

Is the "FAIL" tag on vacation?

2008-08-23 11:33:28 PM
conversion to what exactly... a dead person?

There's ROOM in hospitals for chaplains to be out of the way. In an ambulance, not so much.

Ya, I'm sure they can just wait in the Ambulance lobby until called for.

Faith-bashing is hugely popular on Fark. The anti-faith people are *way* more evangelistic about their position that any faith-having people I've ever met.

Since being on Fark, I've had people try to shove anti-faith rhetoric down my throat constantly -- even though I've never tried to convince anyone to have faith if they don't.

I'll respect your right to believe what you want to believe, and I'll thank you to do the same for me.

And before you all start griping about the money spent on a chaplain-in-the-meat-wagon program, consider that insurance money doesn't pay for chaplains. Investigate what does before you run your mouth, eh?

2008-08-23 11:34:32 PM
Where's the quote, "People are often most in need of conversion when they are badly injured or unconscious"? I didn't see it in TFA. I'd like to know, I'm curious how you convert the unconscious. Can I go into nursing homes after lights out and make a hundred secret muslims?

2008-08-23 11:34:53 PM
If I wake up in an Ambulance and there is a priest I had best be 99.9% guaranteed to be dying or else im going to make $8 Farkillian dollars when I sue the Hospital for the Heart Attack such a scenario would enduce.

/Also, I'm Atheist
//Also, an arsehole
/// :-D

Ironic use of HERO tag?

Please, if I'm in an ambulance, I'd rather have someone there who can actually do something for me, like a fairy godmother.

2008-08-23 11:35:05 PM
Try that shiat with me and I'll convert them...into eunuchs.

Soul chasers are one step below ambulance chasers.

Pincy: Ya, I'm sure they can just wait in the Ambulance lobby until called for.

Have you even *been* in an ambulance lately? They make them wider these days -- mostly to accommodate the expanding girth of the general populace.

2008-08-23 11:35:14 PM
actually... this will probably bring comfort to some people... which I would not begrudge anyone... props are useful in many different forms...
maybe I can hire one to come with me when I confiscate animals from abusive homes...
but then one would probably get hurt
and then I'd get sued...
nm... carry on...

Sorry, but they've been doing this for ages now. I must admit though, their callousness knows no bounds.

I think the only "pushing" of faith or its antithesis here is the state of PA pushing a certain person of one faith on the ambulances...that's all....

Fair enough..... now get your farking chaplain out of my squad.

Awwwwww. Take it up with your all-powerful, eternal, universe-creating best friend. You know, the one who had a bad weekend for your sins?

/And also the one who said that you should bless those who persecute you.

I think it's a good idea. If you're in a lot of pain you can use him for something soft to bite on.

Yeah, this is going to go over well with the Jews and Pagans.

*headdesk*

Speaking as a Christian who's actually read the whole Bible - you're doing it wrong

2008-08-23 11:40:28 PM
Chaplain to ride on Ambulance eh? Lawsuit for torture of atheists. Harassment. Fondling of genitalia.

2008-08-23 11:40:35 PM
So is everyone ignoring studies by all the major medical journals that show that people who praying to a deity thing-a-ma-bob do better than people who don't?

It's not that the deity helps them, it's that they're using their minds to help in healing processes.

Suppose you whacked your leg with a chainsaw. Prayer to whatever you believe in (God, Allah, fair godmother, your left shoe) could help prevent you from going into shock, having a panic attack, etc. EMTs are busy stopping the blood and whatnot.

Would you seriously begrudge someone a chaplain that might actually be able to help on the ride to the hospital?

2008-08-23 11:40:47 PM
So, how long until some young boy wakes up in the back of an ambulance with a chaplains hand down his pants.

2008-08-23 11:41:15 PM
southaustin: even though I've never tried to convince anyone to have faith if they don't.

Unlike in Pennsylvania where the Chaplains are provided for you on your emergency trip to the hospital. Funny, I don't see them offering a non-religious alternative.

I'll respect your right to believe what you want to believe, and I'll thank you to do the same for me.

You can believe whatever you want and we'll respect your "right to believe", but that doesn't mean that we have to respect the belief itself and that definitely doesn't mean that we can't criticize or poke fun at your belief and doing so does not mean that we are dis-respecting your right to believe.

And before you all start griping about the money spent on a chaplain-in-the-meat-wagon program, consider that insurance money doesn't pay for chaplains. Investigate what does before you run your mouth, eh?

If it costs money to have these chaplains ride around in ambulances, I assure you, the cost will be passed on to the rest of us one way or another.
