FTFA: It is not obvious why elephants should need this mathematical faculty in the wild. "It really is tough to figure out why [elephants] would need to count," said Mya Thompson, an ecologist at Cornell University who studies elephants.

I think I could ask the next random 8-year-old I encounter why elephants might need to count and get a reasonable answer. It is totally obvious. They live in clans. They take care of members of the clan.

But a person who STUDIES elephants can't crack that puzzle?

Wow.

Elephants are amazing and awesome.
They can pass a place where one of their babies died and years later they will lay down and grieve the loss at the exact spot where the baby was lost. Very human emotion and action, that.

Incredible, gentle, giant animals.

I don't know.... judging by the way the feet are it looks like it's going forward than pulling backward... but I may be looking at it wrong

Elephants need to be able to count in order to tell the rest of the world how big their dicks are. Think about it, have you ever heard an elephant say "Uh, I dunno. Its hella big though."?? Of course you haven't! Elephants would never say such a thing.

That was the explanation for reasoning why they can differentiate between small discrepancies in numbers in the video. Counting the herd.

No, you're looking at it right. If the animal was pulling, it would be back on its "heels" as it would be using its mass to do so. The dent near the top of the vehicle is most likely from the top of the elephant's head, where it applied its mass to shove the van over.
