I bet the monthly bills just to maintain that school (AC, heating, security) will easily add up to a couple hundred thousand a year.

When I lived in Georgia they passed all the bills needed to build and staff a new high school, but because of a feud with the contractor that shut down construction for months they ended up having to pay all the staff (like 50 people) about 8 months salary before the school was actually finished. By then there was only like 2 months of school left anyway so they didn't open the school until the next year.

A town I lived in did something similar. Built a new school, hired teachers, then realized they forgot to ask for the money for desks.

2008-08-20 12:53:33 PM
The same thing happened here. Once it gets built though, people find a way to use it.

2008-08-20 12:55:18 PM
So umm... maybe they should have secured funding to operate the building before building said building?
/building!

$16mil for an elementary school? It must be the size of a shopping mall.

2008-08-20 01:12:05 PM
My town argued over a referendum to buy property for a new high school for so long that by the time the thing got passed, the land in question was already sold, built on, and had people living there.

2008-08-20 01:18:51 PM
Ahhh, school funding referenda. Asking seniors with no kids in school to decide if a district should spend more money -- and raise property taxes -- to educate the kids of others, then being surprised at the results.

Hundreds of billions to blow up another country: good economic investment
4.5 million to keep a school running: bad economic invest

And we wonder why the country is going down the drain.

"Last fall, we thought it was excessive," said Prior Lake resident Dave Thompson, president of a local group called Citizens for Accountable Government.

This guy is 62 and spends more on his lawn than most people actually earn and his wife makes up for her childless life with a collection of interchangeable pomeranians.

It's just the school board/union/bureaucrats making a point (trying to force the voters to give them more cash). It's not like they couldn't have closed down another few smaller schools and redirected the kids to this one. Whether or not they actually NEED more money, they COULD be using the brand new school, they just don't WANT to do it. This way they might generate some news stories. Notice that, although it's closed, the reporter was able to get a tour easily?

Public education is bloated as hell. They want money to run that place? Start cutting positions, from the top. If you are making 6 figures working in public education, you are working in public education for the wrong reasons...

DNRTFA. Any reason why actually operating the school wasn't part of the referendum that had it built?

Also, for anyone whining about giving more money to the public schools... In most systems, if you read the budget, less than half of the money is spent on instruction and school upkeep. There is a LOT of fat to cut out of most of these budgets. Lots of "Community liaison to the..." and "Director of special..." type people pulling 100k in salary and benefits to do things that are FAR less important than instruction..

/Friend of mine is on the Milwaukee school board.

The school systems have gotten so complacent because they get their X% increase in funds every single year. Won't someone please thi...

God forbid they actually take a look in the mirror and cut the fat. One principal, one assistant principal, three vice-principals, six counselors, grief counselors, etc, etc. There are schools in the Twin Cities where teachers make up less than half of the staff.

Sorry, some people are not going to continue to pump more and more money into an educational system that shows no improvements year after year. Cut the crap, give the teachers more money, and show testing improvemnts. I don't even have kids, but I'd even fund that.

BobtheFascist: $16mil for an elementary school? It must be the size of a shopping mall.

I think that there is a growing trend (in rural areas) to combine all campuses onto one. I worked in a few new construction sites that were k-12, with different gyms, wings, auditoriums, cafeterias, etc.

FTA: But last fall, more than 60 percent of voters rejected the district's request for $4.5 million a year in operating funds and $28.9 million in bonds for an addition to Prior Lake High School.

//Maybe they should not have tied the operating expenses to the same request as building a 24+ Million High School?

2008-08-20 05:16:38 PM
Fail tag needs a drop shadow and a lens flare to fail more.

Twin Cities are failing just fine, however.

2008-08-20 05:17:03 PM
Hopefully the irrational exuberance to use the new tag will dissipate and we will eventually settle into a work of appropriate FAIL tag usage. This is the downside of introducing a new tag.

I see this more as ASINIE rather than FAIL.

Once more comment on the new tag - I think it would be better if it were spelled FIAL.

Except for the fact that local school districts aren't primarily funded by the federal government.
