That is cool. Too bad it'll never happen with crazy conservatives who want to "think of the children" while ignoring real humans in need.

2008-08-20 12:35:48 PM
I've performed both of those tasks in recent years.

kuaq: That is cool. Too bad it'll never happen with crazy conservatives who want to "think of the children" while ignoring real humans in need.

Huh?

Conservative politicians blocked the use of embryonic stem cell developement, namely the developement of new lines, a few years ago. They did not stop stem cell research. Since then scientists have discovered methods of stimulating existing lines to generate more (still perfectly legal) and have also developed techniques to stimulate adult stem cells to behave as if they were embryonic ones (also still perfectly legal). These developements have obviated the need for the types of research that had been outlawed.

It's also why you barely hear any talk about stem cells in the current political cycle. It's just not even a fraction of the issue that it was even 2 short years ago.

they have self-changing record player needles now?

2008-08-20 12:54:13 PM
I like giving blood because I get off on those often-pretty nurses jabbing me with a needle. Just a fetish, I guess.

2008-08-20 12:59:37 PM
What? no Kieth Richards jokes? I'm ashamed of you people.

2008-08-20 01:01:49 PM
Damn, so I don't get to freak out the techs at the blood bank anymore by waiting until they have the needle in, then saying "Oh, my life partner is going to be SO proud of me. He and I just got back from a vacation in Zaire -- he used to be a prostitute there -- and we managed to sneak this adorable monkey back into the country with us?"

Are they screening out gay stem cells?

2008-08-20 04:37:16 PM
So how many babys do you have to put in a blender to get a pint of stemcell blood?

2008-08-20 04:37:22 PM
Stem cell research is evil and this is evidence of that!

It maybe won't happen in America. But if the technology exists, rest assured that the advancements WILL be made. Just not in the USA.

Wait, they make record needles from stem cells now?

Is there anything stem cells can't do?

/windows?

2008-08-20 04:39:14 PM
It's a shame they have to harvest little babies and drain their blood.

No, wait....

Blood swimming pool's for Nordic (wannabe) Metal bands is just around the bend.

So does this mean they won't "compensate me for my time" to "donate" plasma anymore?

:-(

2008-08-20 04:39:50 PM
Actually, the Red Cross just sent me a mailer saying I can give twice as much if I just do the Red Cells. I also don't get called as often, which is a plus.

Lets flash to last night's thread with the headline that was made more hostile on the whole stem cell issue

Reprint...

That being said, they aren't really making blood. They're making red blood cells. Useful, for sure, but hasn't the plasma been a fountain of scarce and valuable factors. Red blood cells without plasma can only transport oxygen, they can't help you heal.

They pay for plasma here, but not for whole blood. The waiting room of the center that does the plasma is full all week long, lots of lower income parents who can really use the $200 or so extra a month. The different centers mark their clients with UV ink on a fingernail to prevent people from double dipping.

If there was a similar payment system for whole blood then competition would push the value up and make the low income clients better off, and there would be no shortage.

Well duh subby. Selene already explained this to Micheal. I don't think Kraven got enough credit for the whole synthetic blood thing, myself.

Use adult or umbilical cord stem cells and there will be no objection. Problem solved.

FTA: "Limitations in the supply of blood can have potentially life-threatening consequences for patients with massive blood loss," said Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), a Worcester-based company.

And all this time I thought the exact opposite, thanks for clearing it up Mr. Chief scientific officer.

Seinfreak: It maybe won't happen in America. But if the technology exists, rest assured that the advancements WILL be made. Just not in the USA.

Yeah, because scientific discovery cannot happen without government funding.

Asshat.

Just get herpes and they stop harassing you to give blood. Washed my hands clean years ago.

So the government slowed medical research and increased the difficulty of proceeding with that research for no rational reason, but it's OK because its still legal.

I believe very strongly in the importance of giving blood and try to give often, but JESUS H CHRIST ON A POGOSTICK Red Cross, stop farking calling me! The worst was the angry Dr. Phil pre-recorded message on my cell reminding me to give blood.

Call me when we get to use Stem Cells to cure my MS. THEN I will jump for freaking joy.

This news saddens me. Where, but for the Red Cross, am I to get free juice and cookies?

Cool. Now maybe the blood centers of South Florida will stop stalking me.

FTA:

"The identification of a stem cell line with "O -" blood-type would permit the production of compatible "universal donor" blood," Lanza added.

Which means, unless one of the currently existing lines is identified with type-O, the idea is somewhat limited.

I was wondering why we weren't hearing about that from Obama/McCain.

Wow. I actually learned something in a Fark thread.

Kudos, good sir!

FTFA:

The "O" blood type is a universal blood type and the only one that can be transfused to people with other blood types.

Uh, no. It's the only type that can be transfused to all people regardless of blood type. But you can still put Types 'A' or 'B' into an 'AB' person. That's why type-AB people are known as universal receivers, because they can take receive O, A, B, or AB blood.

alacy52: Use adult or umbilical cord stem cells and there will be no objection. Problem solved.

How about we just ignore what idiot social conservatives say?

GoldSpider: Yeah, because scientific discovery cannot happen without government funding.

Asshat.

It can, but the pace of basic research (as opposed to applied research) will be much slower, and the research dollars will be directed more towards immediately marketable things than things that are more long-term or things that help smaller groups of people (like people with rare genetic diseases).

2008-08-20 04:46:35 PM
Blah blah unethical blah. What's dandy is that even though the current administration has put a damper on stem cell research, they can use cord blood cells almost as effectively and there's nothing about it tick off any right wingers, aside from the tiny fringe whackos that are opposed to any medical things. (I'm looking at you, Christian Scientists.)

My timing has been really good recently.

// Left my job at a newspaper 1 year ago.
// Left my job at the blood bank 6 months ago.

// Maybe email marketing is now about to vanish? (Current Job)

I've preformed all three.

crazyray: Cool. Now maybe the blood centers of South Florida will stop stalking me.

Hell, due to giving blood (and a couple of fark-ups at the blood bank), I managed to see a nice chunk of the Providence Bruins season a few years back.

I think I also gained 5 lbs.

2008-08-20 04:47:05 PM
It IS kind of awkward when there is a group blood drive and people ask you 'are you giving blood? I did!' and you say 'no' and they say 'why not' and you say 'because I'm gay'.

/have actually 'come out' to a few people that way. fun!
