I liked how after an American won that race, how NBC zoomed in within 2 inches of Jones' face, and kept in there for roughly 17 hours. I had no idea who medaled because their feel good story stumbled.

Oh bummer. She'll have to go back to being a nobody winning world championships.

Heck, there are a ton of amazingly good looking women in the Olympics this year. I could think of many that should team up and do a photo shoot.

Same here. After the race, they went to interview Jones, and you could see the gold medalist behind them in the shot>. It'd be one thing if Jones was the only American in the race, but the gold medalist was from the US as well! There's no excuse for being that rude to the winner.

Saw it happen, and you could tell exactly what caused it.

She jumped out to an awesome lead, and for one split fraction of a millisecond, her brain thought "HOLYfarkINGBATshiatI'MGONNAWIN!" and in that brief instant, she forgot she still had two hurdles to go.

Just like with any other sport, you play until the very, very end.

Sucks, but it's the first rule of any sport you play.

I am pretty sure she just clipped a hurdle and stumbled. I don't think there is any way you can claim she didn't run all out all the way. Hurdlers clip hurdles, it happens. It doesn't mean she wasn't concentrating.

Maybe... guess I should have said "here's my theory on what caused it" instead of "you could tell exactly what caused it".

Oh well, not like I'm the first person on Fark to post an opinion and call it fact, right? :)

no way man, i agree with you 100%, she grabbed that lead and her brain for a split second thought "holy crap, its all going to happen, everything you've ever trained for and work for its about to come to life, your dreams are about to be a reality....." poof. gone. i felt terrible for her. the agony of defeat has never been more apparent. she was gracious and well spoken in the post race interview, and then when they showed her off to the side, crying in her warms ups, i almost shed a tear for her. that can take years to get over.

i don't think she "forgot" she had 2 hurdles, but the last thing you want to happen in competition is for your brain to click on and thought to be involved in the process, your body does all the work, your brain is just there for the ride....

A Canadian woman got the bronze, and that was just as annoying, because her name is Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, which is an odd name to say, and even odder when repeated by the CBC guys over and over and over again. I thought I was going to scream after a while.

Lopes-Schliep is weird to watch though. All the other hurdlers are long, lean, and lithe, most of them are tall as hell too...and Lopes-Scliep is built more or less like a fire hydrant.

Her hotness increases exponentially when interviewed though....you KNOW she's crazy wild in the sack. And can probably make breakfast afterwards, THEN use your deadweight as a training aid.

NBC was shameless with this. The best was when they showed JoJo's family watching the race, and they like freeze framed their faces when she hit the hurdle so you could see how miserable they were. Then they played the video again at regular speed so you could see the whole process of them being ridiculously happy to being devastated within 10 seconds. Then they interviewed JoJo, asked her what it as like to be a loser, then went "okay, thanks goodbye" and ran over to the winner

It takes real character to know when you've been bested, and I think FARK as a whole should admit that they've been completely outclassed in the shameless schadenfreude department by NBC.

I felt SO BAD for LoLo when that happened.

Poor kid.

She put on a good game face when they interviewed her, but only a heartless bastard (or typical Farker) could watch her crying in the back and not feel for her.

This. I felt pretty bad for her when she was kneeling on the track crying. Then I felt better when she put a game face on and did the interview, then I felt even worse when the showed her in the tunnel absolutely crushed.

I'm glad an American won the gold, but she needs to thank Lolo for blowing it rather than winning it on her own.

Seriously, if you really wanted to see her breasts, all you had to do was watch NBC for the 10 minutes leading up to the actual race. While the annoucers were talking about her, the camera was on her several times for at least 10 seconds at a time. Almost every time she was bent forward and you could see right down her singlet. I'm 99% sure there were multiple nipple shots...she is rather small-breasted.

/If I'm droolin', it's a nipple...

Listen To Me Im On The Internet: then I felt even worse when the showed her in the tunnel absolutely crushed.

You know, to be honest I'm really pissed at NBC that they did that final shot in the tunnel. I know she was doing it in semi-public, but I can't imagine anyone wants that sole moment of self-agony to be broadcast to the world. I know NBC wants to get the emotion of a moment, but didn't they already get that when she was on her knees after the race?

Also I just want someone to stab Costas in the face. With a rusty spoon.

2008-08-20 03:15:36 PM
I would love to see one of the athletes flatten the cameraman for shoving it in their face all the time.

And then dig out Costas' spleen with a dull old spoon.

I know, they should have left her alone after the race. I imagine she thought she was out of the camera's reach in the tunnel and finally broke down, except NBC decided she wasn't.

2008-08-20 04:25:17 PM
I hate that the athletes aren't given a couple of minutes to cool down before a camera is shoved in their face. Every interview from track and swimming has involved the interviewer asking a somewhat in depth question while the athletes are still trying to breathe normally.

Typical interview:

Reporter: What do you think this means for the US?
Athelete: *gasp for air* It's such an *gasp for air* accom- *gasp for air*

I realize the athletes might need to move on to other events but seriously, can't they be given more than 1 second from event to interview?

2008-08-20 04:31:38 PM
I felt bad for her, although I got a chuckle out of seeing her yell "finish" as she crossed the finish line. Okay, maybe it wasn't finish. But in the slow-motion video you could see her yelling a word that definitely started with an "f".

2008-08-20 04:34:47 PM
That tunnel scene, despite being one of the most heartbreaking things ever televised, made me glad that I'll never be athletic enough to have to face that situation. To dedicate at least four yearsof your life--eschewing all other indulgences and ambitions--to achieve a fleeting goal that could literally be snuffed out in a split second. That's pain, ladies and gentlemen.
