(CBS13.com - CBS Sacramento)   Having solved a $15 billion deficit, the California Senate breathlessly resolves that electric cars are too quiet. Fail: "It would establish a committee to study the issue and recommend ways the vehicles could make more noise"   (cbs13.com) divider line 276

For $50, I'll show them how to duct-tape a harmonica to the roof.

I thought all the cars in California had way too loud car stereos.

I can't even believe the level of stupid here... electric cars are quiet. That's GOOD. Quiet cars means less noise pollution. That's GOOD.

2008-08-19 09:08:01 PM
how much noise do you think a senator would make being dragged behind an electric car?

They want electric cars to make more noise? What, are they going to tell drivers to put playing cards in the spokes or something?

BTW, by no means does this comment mean I'm for or against this. But I damned near had one back up into me when I was walking in a parking lot, and I couldn't even hear it. Maybe they should add baseball cards in the spokes.

I regularly drive an electric car around town with my job and I helped design and build a hybrid electric back in 1996 which also ran in electric mode only. The lack of noise IS a serious problem. Personally I'd like to hear them make a sound like the Jetsons car.

Does it require a committee to fix? Hell no.

Hey, it's Darwin in action! If you cross the street without looking, I have no sympathy for you. In Visualingo's case, though, I don't know what to do, short of putting bright, shiny lights on 'em or something.

Cars don't have spokes, except some of those really ugly Scions. You need to tie tin cans to them with fishing line.

2008-08-19 10:20:39 PM
Maybe they should all have "La Cucaracha" playing on the car horn non-stop outside of the car? Or ice-cream truck music?

2008-08-19 10:20:41 PM
Put some thumping bass in your electric car. Problem solved.

The biggest segment of the population I've heard complaining about the lack of noise are blind people.

Are you saying you don't have sympathy for blind people?

Came here to say this. Now I can go on my way.

One of the major problems is that the visually impaired cannot hear the cars. Think about crossing the street. You may look both ways. They listen for noise. If they hear a car, they wait. If they don't, they go.

I read where they did a study, with different blind individuals. They would drive the hybrid around the block and ask them to tell the researcher when the car passed. One car had gone around eight times, when the blind guy asked when the test was going to start.

Quiet is great...if you don't need the noise to not get hit.

So, like, blind people, elderly people, or people who have to cross at an intersection where there's an obstructed view, these are all fodder for Darwin?

Visualingo: You know, until you get hit by one.

Sounds like a personal problem. I try to be aware of my surrounding's. Get off your cell phone and iPod and look around.

The Chinese have electric scooters and bikes. They ride them where people walk and people walk where they ride them. Sneaky bastards.

Sidewalks are a noble concept in some Chinese cities.

Yeah, a little noise would help.

But not a government commission-too much noise involved there.

Just do what I did to my all electric car:

Put a gasoline engine from the junkyard in the trunk, tank of gas, wire it up so it runs when I'm driving. Duh... get a brain morans.

2008-08-19 10:24:43 PM
I have an idea. I would put some type of "horn" on or in the car. If you (the driver) want to make noise, perhaps to let someone jackass know he shouldn't have cut you off, then you could "honk" this "horn".

Unless you're a blind person who listens for cars before crossing the street.

This is also an issue for seeing eye dogs... they know not to cross the street by listening for the sound of approaching cars

still waiting on that california tag...

Liberals!

Isn't this interesting? I don't think they should spend so much money on the problem, but it IS important to CONSIDER. At least publicize that these cars are so much quieter.. maybe make some PSAs or something. Or not, I'm sure people will figure it out..

They have this same problem in baseball apparently. Maple bats don't make as loud of a noise when they break and people in the crowd don't know to duck/cover. WHICH IS THE punishment they deserve for not paying attention to baseball. BUT sometimes one must pay more attention to beer!

2008-08-19 10:28:43 PM
who cares if a few blind people get flattened?
we're talkin electric cars here, people.

no room for the sick and weak in the future.

Enough to make it worth trying, just to find out.

perhaps we just make cars that smell? (hey, it's another sense)

Everyone in this thread fails. You know how much pedestrian accidents will go up with cars operating completely silently? Imagine what it would be like at night.

finally. the voice of reason.

/really does think electric cars should be equipped with noise generators. t

So are these hypothetical blind people jaywalking? I know in my area crosswalks make an audible sound when the walk light is up. Maybe if they just cross when they feel like it they deserve to be hit by silent death-machines.

I hate the FAIL tag. Looks too much like the Sports by Brooks Tag, which already served as "FAIL", but only applied to the sports tab.

2008-08-19 10:30:28 PM
Surely we couldn't teach drivers of these vehicles that they must be extra cautious when driving, so as not to hit someone who cannot see them.

/really, artificial noise could be added to these cars, even with simple devices, and they wouldn't impact the experience for drivers/passengers in any way, even with the windows down (unless traveling at 5 mph, perhaps)

2008-08-19 10:30:31 PM
A little off topic but somehow this reminded me of what I saw today. A too-fat-to-walk person on an electric scooter put that sweet baby into reverse. "beep... beeep.... beeeep"

I laughed myself into a hernia.

If only someone had developed a device for cars that can make a loud sound at the push of a button or something that a driver could use in a situation where he needs to alert others of his presence.
