Buh? Never seen that in my lifetime.

I'm interested in reading the follow-up to this. I don't think I'll be surprised to learn that these guys used their own ATM cards to withdraw the money.

LOL. I suppose you could have it dispense $20s while only debiting your account $1. But they could still easily audit your card.

I never saw an ATM that dispenses $1 bills. Is everyone a broke ass in Lincoln?

/you can't get ATM for $1 either

While I am against theft, people who use the default password/PIN/etc that is in an owners manual without changing it deserve to get pwn3d.

2008-08-19 01:28:32 PM
I doubt they were ever giving out $1 bills at any time.

From reading the article what it looks like they did was to tell the machine it's $20 slots were actually filled with $1 bills. That would then make it dispense $400 actual dollars when the machine thought it was only $20.

Recoil
You are correct. The ATMs are designed to work with many different currencies, as a result, they can be told that any denomination ($1,$2,$5,$10,$20,$50,$100) is in the machine. They just told it that it was full of $1s instead of $20s.
The smallest I've seen dispensed was $5s, but that machine had several cash holders, as you could get $50s, $20s, and $5s.

If they used a stolen card why would they bother with altering the machine?

ATM cards come with a default PIN and an owners manual?

I have seen as low as $5 in an ATM transaction

/Que the "ATM" jokes

I love PNC ATMs. If you ask for $75, they'll dispense three $20, one $10, and 5 $1. It's great.

BigDumbGuy: ATM cards come with a default PIN and an owners manual?

No, but you can get into the machine's configuration by doing specific key strokes and then entering a sooper-seekrit password.

Oh, I see what you mean now. The bank should have changed the codes. Forgive me. I am not very smart.

BigDumbGuy: Oh, I see what you mean now. The bank should have changed the codes. Forgive me. I am not very smart.

These were private ATMs, like you'd see at a 7-11, gas station, strip club, etc, not bank owned (Wells Fargo, Wamu, etc). Private ones are usually owned by the store owner or a guy who owns a few and pays to put them into the stores. If you're in IT, you know how many normal users just use the default password, now just move that to ATMs.

Oh, and I used to work for an armored car company and serviced ATMs, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

I'm really old and remember the dark days before ATM's (and the bright days after ATM's, but before ATM fees), and I have never seen one that dispensed singles. Heck, finding one with 10's or 5's is hard these days.

You seem too clever to be a Farker.

2008-08-19 04:48:17 PM
I have to assume that the machine did not actually hold any singles to dispense, just that it is a possible setting for the hardware. So you program it to think that the twenties bin is holding singles.

I've seen stories where they set it to think it had fives. Same deal, just more lucrative.

That's why I love Wal-Mart/Target/Home Depot..... $.79 for a pack of gum. $50 dollars cash back...total charge $50.79 and no "fee" attached!

What? When you get an ATM card, your bank asks you to create a PIN while you're applying for the account/card. There is no such thing a a "default PIN" for ATM cards.

Does that mean I can finally get that farking 3 dollars out of my savings account that has haunted me for years?

Sorry, dj, I didn't read the whole thread. I now see where you are referring to the ATM machine interface software, not the ATM cards given to patrons.

2008-08-19 04:51:23 PM
ATMs in strip clubs dispense singles.
(and charge a $10 fee)

2008-08-19 04:51:30 PM
I'm going to jump on the "I've never encountered an ATM that dispenses singles" bandwagon.

2008-08-19 04:51:55 PM
BTW... ATM is short for Automatic Teller Machine, so ATM "Machine" is redundant.

2008-08-19 04:52:02 PM
I don't know about the rest of you, but I prefer cash in $20s.

2008-08-19 04:52:21 PM
If they used a stolen card why would they bother with altering the machine?

I think it works more like:

1) Buy a debit card in a cash transaction
2) Go to the target location(s) retrieving 20 times your investment
3) Rinse, repeat

/no risk of getting caught stealing cards, no need to determine PIN

2008-08-19 04:52:59 PM
I'd visit an ATM more often if it dispensed Kraft singles.

2008-08-19 04:53:02 PM
I only recently found out that you can get $10 bills from an ATM.

I don't fark wit' anything smaller than $20s anyway, ya know what I mean?

2008-08-19 04:53:53 PM
Now if I could just reprogram the soda machine to dispense beer...

2008-08-19 04:54:24 PM
The ATM at the local PNC Bank dispenses singles. One reason why I switched to them.

2008-08-19 04:54:48 PM
*sigh* idiots end users .. default passcodes... smart thieves.. stupid ATM owners..

To answer BigDumbGuy If they used a stolen card why would they bother with altering the machine?

if the stolen ATM card had access to $400.. and you asked a non-modified ATM for that $400 it would pay out twenty $20 bills.

now modify that ATM to think it is loaded with $1 bills.. it would spit out 400 "dollar" bills that are actually $20 bills.. for a total of... $8000... which would you rather take??

/serves the owner right
/change your passwords!!
/applies to your wireless routers too!!

Lockboxes on forsale/foreclosed properties are even worse.
There are basically 10 different combos the entire industry uses.

To get more money than what is in the accounts of the stolen cards.

NikolaiFarkoff: Buh? Never seen that in my lifetime.

There's one at the UofMN that used to dispense as small as a $5, which is the lowest I've ever seen. $10 are not uncommon.

/$5 ATM is on the West bank, in the basement of the SocSci tower (Tunnel between SocSci, Blegen, and Wilson Library). It's been a couple years, no idea if it's still there.
