Some of these photos have been 'shopped. I can tell by the pixels, and I've seen quite a few in my day.

Can't believe I'm the only one...

Shrugging Atlas

Help me out here. What am I supposed to be noticing in those pictures?

Well the first three are pretty obvious. The soldier's gun is pointing right at the baby's head. It was cut together with the earlier shot to look like the gun isn't pointed right at the kid.

Had to look the Kent state one up- fence post was moved to aesthetically harmonize the image- notable for when it was made, not the intention of the manipulation.

So that is why the Kent state shot qualifies. Is the last one up there for the colorization of the blood stains?

It's just water, but was colored red to make it appear to be blood (if that's what you meant).

Reading the article, I'm not sure what these examples have to to with photojournalists. It seems like the problem lies with publishers/producers/media outlets not checking sources/following leads/asking questions, not the photographers.

Photojournalists are pretty good at policing their own... they know one bad apple will certainly ruin everybody's credibility. The NPPA has a super hard-on for ethics and honesty and usually won't hesitate calling out an offending photojournalist. Example: Toledo Blade Discovers Dozens Of Doctored Detrich Photos (new window)

Most PJ's frown on anything other than slight levels/curve tweeking, possibly some minor sharpening. If you can't capture it in the camera, you can't make it in Photoshop.

Well, photo retouchers always slim down the subject, so it's obviously the first one. But retouchers also always hypersaturate the colors, so it's obviously the second one.

At this point I imagine more people have seen that version of that classic photo than the original. People now would likely regard the original as the fake.
