By and large, what has google failed at?

Youtube? It's huge...and not making any real money. It's bearing the burden of the MPAA/RIAA while all these other sites are free to host video. It's not like it's caused an explosion in the need for bandwidth, bandwidth that enables new opportunities and tons more data. Data that needs to be categorized and searched, and bandwidth that needs to be served.
I can make the same argument for most other google services, as well as some of them just being minor money losers that create goodwill.

Everyone profits when the internet expands, especially since I don't easily see google being usurped as the search engine of choice.

T-Mobile? Fail. No one's going to leave Verizon or AT&T for the pink runner up.

2008-08-18 06:07:03 PM
T-mobile is rolling out 3G at the same time so who knows they may offer a real advantage. T-mobile's phone plans are also cheaper then the other providers.

2008-08-18 06:13:25 PM
If this thing work's with T Mobile's UMA feature, I might have to buy this over the new Blackberry Javeline, since the new Blackberry Bold is waaaay overpriced... decisions, decisions.

T-Mobile's coverage and service are better then both of them. I've used them all in the Boston area now, and T-Mobile has been the best.

Ironically, I'm still dropping T-Mobile, but only because I'm dropping my personal phone altogether.

I have the HTC (T-Mobile) SDA. It's the bastard child of HTC, they don't even talk about it on their website.

Oh, and to stay on topic, google will succeed. They always have.

I don't expect it to be a big commercial success for Google. But I do expect it to provide some competition* and drive others to do better.

*Cynically speaking, when the iPhone destroys RIM, Apple can point to Google and say "see, we're not a monopoly" sort of like how Microsoft used to do when Apple was pathetic and non-threatening. :)

1700 band only? gee, would be nice if they got a frequency that would work inside a building.

going for the htc diamond touch pro myself.

dbirchall: when the iPhone destroys RIM

That's a long time coming, if it ever happens. Apple doesn't do business well, and it proved it again with it's 2.0 release.

According to the FCC, the device is approved only with the 1700MHz WCDMA radio. Translation: It's exclusive to T-Mobile, for now at least.

At any rate this is NOT the gPhone. The gPhone is a Google-branded device, this will be a T-mobile branded device. It's connection to google is limited to running the Android OS. Thats it. The gPhone is a dead project for the time being according to most sources on the subject matter. I would imagine Google is waiting to see consumer response to an Android device before commiting either way to the gPhone.

I'm holding out for the HTC Touch Pro (new window) if/when it comes to AT&T later this year.

I left Verizon for T-Mobile. I'm much happier with the pink T.

WANT.

/T-Mobile customer for 5+ years and my contract is up this month
//Will hold out renewing until this comes out.

2008-08-18 11:34:16 PM
Sounds very tempting...even though my T-Mo contract ends in 2 months I think I might stick with them unless this thing just blows Blackberry out of the water.

I can't live without a built-in keyboard. I've tried, as much as I like the iPhone, I email way too damn much to not have one.

That HTC Touch touched me in the naughty place and I liked it...

The HTC looks pretty limited screen wise. They should get rid of the dial/ball thing and extend the screen fully.

There's also a matter of who's going to develop for the android platform. Seems like everyone's trying to concentrate on iPhone apps right now.

I'm sure android will be a more powerful development platform, but people always take pretty over substance. IE razr, the original iMac, etc.

My Blackberry 8700 is ugly as sin, but I can chat over AIM or MSN pretty damn fast. As long as I dont have to write out a short story, no one can usually tell I'm away from my desk at home It's function over sex appeal. It's the Male of the phone world :-p
