I happened to catch this "live" (by which I mean when NBC showed it, even though I don't think they showed it actually live). My thought was "wow, hes so much faster than the others he didn't even need to try at the end." I highly doubt this was premeditated, you don't have enough time to decide, yeah, Im far enough in the lead to shut it down so I can make more money later on on the fly either. I suspect it was more along the lines of "YESSSS I WIN!!!"

I saw him run that race live, and he obviously stopped running full speed about 10 meters from the finish line. I believe he said later that the other Jamaican always had pushed him in these races, and when he glanced around and didn't see him, he was so surprised he slowed down.

Not sure I believe that; I think he was so astonished to be blowing away the other world-class sprinters he thought he may have already crossed the finish line. If he kept going full speed he would have probably set a 9.5 record.

Michael Johnson had a nice halo period after Atlanta where people actually cared, and he raced that Canadian in the 150m; that got huge ratings for track and field. Bolt will get the same. He's already the most famous srpinter since Johnson for what he did last night. In the US, that will last a little while. In Jamaica the guy is a God though. And every single person on that island will be tuning in to watch him for years.

Sort of... Forgive the wikidump, he holds 17 WR marks, but got into a groove of breaking his own record by 1 CM from 1985-1994 (13 times?) So his last thirteen world records were for less than 6 inches improvement in ten years.,

Bolt is going to have to try really hard to beat what has to be a WR for milking it.

Yeah, maybe if you're talking about the 5,000m. People care about the 100m outdoor event. There are 100m athletic stars that have been around within the last decade. Bolt is probably going to be one of them.

It's common for a lifter to beat a record by the minimum amount, and then come back and beat it again, rinse, repeat.

Countries or sponsors usually pay for records, so this is an easy way to make more money.

Why get one bonus for beating a lift by 40 pounds when you can get a couple of bonuses by beating a lift by 10 pounds 4 times?
