People outside of NYC don't really understand mafia-controlled construction jobs.

GAT_00: I saw the suggestion on here, but I want to rebuild WTC almost just as the were, but just make them one floor higher. Oh, and put a giant hand giving the world the finger on top.

I've always thought they should rebuild the original towers just as they were before, but make three of them this time as a real "fark you" to Bin Laden and Co.

2008-08-18 01:21:08 PM
I figure we should build the Porcine Tower, a giant pig shaped structure that can be identified with the naked eye from space. It would symbolize both the bloated bureaucracy involved in delaying construction as well as an FU to muslims on a jihad. Two birds with one stone.

2008-08-18 01:21:22 PM
They're just trying to make sure the new designs can hold up to another attack by the hulkster.

studebaker hoch: People outside of NYC don't really understand mafia-controlled construction jobs.

Pretty much. I was amazed a few years ago when the Post or the Daily News ran a huge story on just how many mob guys were getting a piece of it. I'm still shocked they'd be so brazen as to get involved in such a high-profile job.

fernt: GREAT! Then it will coincide with the release of the Final Report of why WTC7 fall down go boom.

Wow, it took longer than I thought for the Stupid Fark Twoofer Brigade to show up.

I like how they complain how long it is taking for the report to be issued, because the cork smokers aren't going to read/understand it anyway.

I can't think of one metropolitan area that isn't tainted by union.

Well, our government should have thought of this before they knocked it down.

/sadly not my comment

SPOILER ALERT:

Terrorists did it

Cause during an election year, rebuilding something that big should only take a few months.
Probably be built in time for Obama to have it "attacked" so he can declare martial law, if he gets elected at all.

2008-08-18 01:25:49 PM
DaBishop: I wonder how long it took to design/build the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

Good thing I was just there and can answer this. It was about 12 years from the time they decided to make a Pearl Harbor memorial to the time it was actually completed and dedicated.

There is no Mafia.

Take it out of the hands of 100 New York splinter groups and put it under a single overarching entity, any entity, who answers to nobody and it will be done in years rather than decades. Disjointed diverse comittees is how you get arguments, political correctness and red tape. It is not how to get skyscrapers in the air.

nikilds: I was in NYC a month ago and there was seriously like 2 construction guys there and a crane just chillin.

Who is in charge of building this thing? They seem to have a lax schedule.

We call those "unions". It's a pretty common thing in NYC. If they didn't use 'em, there would be a big scary inflatable rat out in front.

2008-08-18 01:28:07 PM
Yeah.. build another tall tower...
Wouldn't it make more sense to build something low to the ground?
Perhaps even under it?

/would prefer nothing at all get built

There's a lot of people making a lot of money without the need to actually build anything. Eventually, the money pot will run dry, they will fall into the red and then start building once they get more funds handed to them.

We need to hire the South Koreans (Samsung) who are building the Burj Dubai at a rate of 1 floor every 3 days.

/world's tallest structure now
//still going strong!

2008-08-18 01:33:11 PM
At this point in time, why bother? Why bother reporting on it even? Not like anyone has missed the towers. Give it to someone who will eventually develop it into a few buildings and then proceed to rent it out.

Missing the people inside is different, so put up a plaque and a statue remembering their lives.

2008-08-18 01:34:23 PM
Let's just turn it into an airport.

/too soon?

...oh shiat, here comes the lynch mob.

I guess it wouldn't do any good to point out that a lot of "good Americans" are Muslims? Or is that "commie talk"?

There must not be a pressing need for another huge building in downtown NYC, or they'd have started on it already. I wouldn't want to be a private contractor having to deal with all the usual bullshiat that goes along with building in NYC PLUS all that awesome bullshiat they have to deal with vis a vis the "memorial" stuff.

They oughta just put a park there, with a plaque or small display, maybe some photos of what used to be there and then a notation: This is what happens when you think the world outside the United States isn't your problem. Someone makes it your problem.

Just my suggestion. Feel free to add your own.

FTFY

That said, if there is any type of federal or state funding associated with the project, (massive) delays are - sadly - a given.

I think a more accurate statement would be "People outside of the construction industry don't really understand what it takes to go from 'I want to build a building' to the start of construction."

And it isn't really anything the layperson needs to know (Although - IMO - it would help). But understand one thing: regardless of how "high-profile" your building is, the state and local authorities have you by the short and curlies. If they don't want you to build something, you probably won't. If they want to hold your project hostage and extort you in some way, shape or form, they can and will. Most developers take it in stride.

Now just imagine the public outcry if the city and state helped the developer to "fast-track" his project - no matter what it was - through all the agencies, public hearings, zoning, etc.

/LOL @ the Empire State Building story
//Welcome to the 21st Century
///...where it takes longer to get approval to build a building that it takes to actually build it

ZachF81: mmm... pancake: We used to lead the world in regards to efficiency and innovation. Our bloated bureaucracies have become anchors for our progress as a nation.

This. The Empire State Building was designed in 2 weeks, and built in about one year. It'll be 15 years before the Freedom Tower/WTC site is finished, and it won't be nearly as architecturally powerful as the Empire State Building was/is.

Yea, well, people used to actually have pride and determination. Now we talk about having pride. Now those who claim the most pride tend to be the abhorrent mobs our founders warned us about.

So funny!

I hope it's delayed indefinitely, because, frankly... in a world where you can run a large service or financial corporation out of an 8002Ft. building with a server room - and our grand palaces of industry are rotting like peaches on the ground, all along the rust belt - the last thing we need, in America, is another 120 story monstrosity that hoovers up resources and will play hell finding tenants.

Do I fit in here yet?

ZachF81:

This. The Empire State Building was designed in 2 weeks, and built in about one year.

true, but it was hot-tracked, meaning, they basically designed as they went. the blueprints had barely dried for a floorplan before they were putting it together.

palexc: ZachF81: This. The Empire State Building was designed in 2 weeks, and built in about one year.

Yeah, but it'll always play second-fiddle to Chrysler building in terms of style.

THIS.

OK, solution to a quick build-out of WTC:

(1) politicians, GTFO
(2) relatives of victims, GTFO
(3) Unions, GTFO

snuff3r: Freedom tower. Really? Still? Hasn't some retard in whatever retard government department came up with that doosy realised just how retarded and rah-rah stupid that is? Can't they just build a building and get on with life??

Yeah, I don't understand why they won't stop beating around the bush and just build a 2000 foot phallus with a giant red X on it.

2008-08-18 01:49:08 PM
Why rebuild it? It was a failure and they could barely keep a reasonable amount of tenants.

2008-08-18 01:49:12 PM
Cyborg77: It'll be finished when we leave Iraq.

Better idea. Let's rebuild the World Trade Center IN Iraq. Turn it into a giant oil pump. With a nice "pwned" billboard on the side. Or better yet, Afghanistan.

retro128: Yeah, I don't understand why they won't stop beating around the bush and just build a 2000 foot phallus with a giant red X on it.

What the fark does that mean? Are we the only country that builds tall buildings? Are we evil because of that too? For fark's sake.

It has nothing to do with Bureaucracy and more to do with sucking off every single victims family to the point where nothing can be accomplished because no one will be happy. Even thought the land shouldn't revolve around them. People died, sorry, get over it.

10/10, sure to get some bites.
