mmm... pancake: We used to lead the world in regards to efficiency and innovation. Our bloated bureaucracies have become anchors for our progress as a nation.

This. The Empire State Building was designed in 2 weeks, and built in about one year. It'll be 15 years before the Freedom Tower/WTC site is finished, and it won't be nearly as architecturally powerful as the Empire State Building was/is.

It has nothing to do with Bureaucracy and more to do with sucking off every single victims family to the point where nothing can be accomplished because no one will be happy. Even thought the land shouldn't revolve around them. People died, sorry, get over it.

Give the project to Trump. True, he will put his name on the side of it but at least the man actually builds stuff!

Should have been build the exact same way, and done 5 years ago.

Freedom tower. Really? Still? Hasn't some retard in whatever retard government department came up with that doosy realised just how retarded and rah-rah stupid that is? Can't they just build a building and get on with life??

A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy will build something with a stupid name, but won't cross the street to vote in a national election.

Also, if you're into documentaries I highly recommend Man on Wire about the tightrope walker that conquered the towers.

I saw the suggestion on here, but I want to rebuild WTC almost just as the were, but just make them one floor higher. Oh, and put a giant hand giving the world the finger on top.

Yeah, but it'll always play second-fiddle to Chrysler building in terms of style.

What do they mean "World Trade Center"? I don't remember there being any "World Trade Center" in New York? Or am too young to remember it? What did it look like anyway? Whatever happened to it?

It is a travesty that nothing has gotten done with that site yet. I pass by there every now and again and the whole place is a giant s--thole. It is embarrassing.

There was also stories where the height of the building would be 1776 feeet.

/The official dedication after its built could have a song from the 'Chinese Democracy' album.

brap: As opposed to the lightening fast 1958 - 1973 timeline of the first one?

Exactly. Most bureaucracies are slow; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is the slowest. The UN sends its people downtown for lessons from PANYNJ. Across the street, 7 WTC is open for business. Mostly empty, but open for business.

As a matter of national pride, the site should have been cleaned up and rebuilt by now. The fact that it hasn't shows serious problems with the leadership and the nation itself for not demanding more from its leadership.

Looks like Trump's idea of rebuilding using an updated version of the old towers was the way to go, and I hate that arrogant douchebag.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the Freedom Tower design looks like New York flipping New Jersey a giant bird?

I mean, LOOK at it.

Yep... NYC flipping NJ the Brooklyn Salute. Gotta love it!

In my opinion they should just make the place into a park/museum where you have a wall with the names of the dead.

Plus for some reason I have an uneasy feeling with the name "Freedom Tower".

Hawnkee: They're on the Duke Nukem Forever schedule.

I live in New York and I honestly thought for a while that everyone had given up and gone home. It's really never in the news these days, and the last I'd really heard was all about how they were deadlocked on what exactly to do wit the site. I was quite shocked that they've actually managed to build anything at all.

I guess that's what happens when people decide, because they knew someone who died in the towers, that they get a say in what gets built.

I suppose that they got past that phase though and are just into the over-budget and behind schedule phase now.

After the oceans boil off, but before we get to find out if the expanding red giant will push Earth out into a more distant orbit or if it will just get engulfed by the Sun.

They should build a highrise pig farm and sausage plant on that site. It'll never be bombed again.

I wonder how long it took to design/build the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

2008-08-18 01:16:39 PM
I was in NYC a month ago and there was seriously like 2 construction guys there and a crane just chillin.

Who is in charge of building this thing? They seem to have a lax schedule.

LegacyDL: In my opinion they should just make the place into a park/museum where you have a wall with the names of the dead.

If I recall correctly that land is actually owned by a person. It is very valuable land and he wants to put buildings on it again to make money. So it would be difficult and not very American to just take it away to build a useless memorial.

It is lame that something hasn't been built yet on it, i think the pandering to the families was a mistake from the beginning.

2008-08-18 01:16:55 PM
They should make the new one fireproof

woodyerik: People died, sorry, get over it.

Sad to say, this is right. Do we retire an interstate highway every time someone's killed in a car crash? No.

The towers should have been rebuilt by now, in the exact footprints as the old buildings and to the same dimensional specifications...down to the inclusion of a mall and food court at the subway level.

I would much rather have seen my tax dollars achieve the above than to bail out Fanny / Freddie and every economics 101 illiterate jackass who bought an "investment property" since 2001.

Who the hell will want to work there? They'll be pissing themselves every day expecting a repeat.
