Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
To say "pleased to meet ya"
And tell you how I became the karate kid of Reseda

In south New Jersey born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When my mom found found out
my father's up to no good
Started screwin' around in my neighborhood
My mom told me "Your dad's a big cheater"
She said "We're moving to Los Angeles, a town called Reseda"

I met the the Cobra Kai and when they came near
They jumped of their bikes and kicked my rear
If anything I can say I'd like to try to stay and beat 'em
But I thought 'Naw forget it' - 'Yo homes to Reseda'

I pulled up to the house of Mr. Miyagi
And I asked if I could cut up a Bonsai tree
I waxed off and waxed off
His home couldn't be cleaner
Did the crane kick and was the karate kid of Reseda

This thread reminds me of a Family Guy episode. you know, the one where random pop culture references were inserted in lieu of jokes.

I_Love_Cheesecake: Sybarite: While nothing much went on in Macchio's career after the Karate Kid movies, ever notice how well his female co-stars like Elizabeth Shue and Tamlyn Tomita did? Even Robin Lively has had a fairly active career post-Kid.

Aside from Leaving Las Vegas and Adventures in Babysitting (a guilty pleasure), what else has Shue done that was at least remotely noteworthy?

Well, I'm not sure if you'd consider it a role/film of notice but she did do that movie that was basically like a modern Flowers for Algernon, where she plays a retarded woman made smart by a new medical procedure. Don't know the name of the movie though.

Oh, and probably the most appropriate use of the "Old and busted/New Hotness" meme pretty much ever.

No, you're thinking of "[Insert Adjective] Movie". Family Guy actually makes it somewhat clever. Epic Movie and the like are just a bunch of "We're in a scary place- Hey look over there what's that??? Paris Hilton saying 'That's hot!' HAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAAAAAA!!!! Uh oh, we're in the middle of a Spartan battle. [Camera pans to the left] Britney Spears with a shaved head! HAHHAAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!!"

BravadoGT: I thought I just saw the modern remake of the Karate Kid. It's called "Never Back Down".

It's about a teenage boy who moves to Southern California. As he gets used to his new life, he catches the eye of a martial arts bully, who thrashes him. But then, he manages to hook up with a local martial arts master, who agrees to apprentice him (but not for revenge!). After a lot of work, our hero finally meets the bully in the big local tournament in dramatic fashion. Oh--there's a cute blonde girl who takes to him too...

Sound familiar?

FWIW-It was still a pretty good little movie-as long as you know you're not expecting "The Departed"

I was going to post the exact same thing. Never Back Down pretty much is a remake of the Karate Kid.

I've never got the appeal of the karate kid movies.

The end fight is Daniel Son getting his ass kicked for ten minutes, but then he concentrates and lands a couple of sissy punches or kicks and is declared the winner? What kind of shiat tournament is that?

Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. "Random pop culture references in lieu of jokes." You know, I've, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Hmm. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside the South Park before. Because that's what they say on the show right? Isn't it? "Random pop culture references." And, and yet you've taken that and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart guy you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me too as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. God you're so funny!

I think a lot of the jokes in it would now result in police / federal action (destruction of the boat, teachers wanting to check out student bits to identify the "flasher", teacher sex in the gym, etc.) that it would be ruined. What was so GOOD about the original was that the guys were hornballs, and the point was that they WEREN'T having sex a lot. Does ANYBODY think that would fly in today's 16-20 crowd? Add in a crappy music tie-in and obligatory teen-movie dirty dancing? Bleck.

Not even remotely close. At least the Rocky movies show something that vaguley representing a fight.

It's a joke. From Family Guy. It simultaneously debases him for using the South Park reference, and indirectly myself for using a direct quote from Family Guy.

Well, she's been in some huge movies, some hits (Cocktail, Back to the Future II and III) and some flops (The Saint, Hollow Man), regardless we're talking about big payday films. Then there have been some lower budget but critically acclaimed movies like Deconstructing Harry and Mysterious Skin.

If you think South Park came up with that criticism, and everyone like me is just following suit, you're an idiot. I (and a million other people) noticed it the first time I watched Family Guy.

Not that it was a GREAT movie or anything but the original Karate Kid is what made me take up wrestling and martial arts.

Will Smith keeps me out of movie theatres and away from the TV whenever he is starring.

So, you could say that both have had a positive impact on my physical and mental health.

I think you're just looking for an excuse to call someone an idiot. But hey! Guess you're feeling better about yourself now, so I guess I helped raise your self-confidence ever so much in a roundabout way.

That counts as my good deed for the day. Now to go kick puppies.
