And I wonder if they ever watch horror movies themselves. If you burn zombies buried in the area, the zombie dust goes up and infects normal people, then what are you gonna do?

I was a firefighter in the US for a while, and one thing that we were taught but governments didnt want us to do is that burning the underbrush actually helps prevent fires. If you let fires burn naturally, the trees will not be harmed (except for the lower branches which come back) and the brush gets cleared. If you rush and put them out as soon as they start then the brush builds up, and eventually it will get to the point that if it ignites it will burn hotter and faster, and will kill all the trees, plus it becomes harder to stop.

FTA:
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- Indian tribes from the Klamath River canyon are worried that the U.S. Forest Service is violating some of their sacred lands by fighting a remote wilderness wildfire rather than letting it burn naturally.

Maybe they are on to something there.

Firefighters - listen to me. Do NOT go into the light. Stop where you are. Turn away from it. Don't even look at it!

I'm getting tired of "quotes" from articles that buy a greenlight but are nowhere to be found. It's only fun when someone actually SAYS what you quoted, subby. Other than that you're making it up, and that's easy.

2008-08-14 10:21:07 AM
Let it burn. It seems to me that a lot of the firefighting is nothing but a jobs program. Those guys who were killed in the helicopter crash in California a few weeks ago were fighting a fire in a remote, unroaded area for reasons that are totally unclear.

I would think of it more as a gift certificate, assuming your tribe gives you money or you get free college tuition. Otherwise, I guess it's kind of brand-like.

trixter_nl: why do only native americans have to register with the feds? Isnt that racist?

You only have to register if you want to claim treaty rights. ie Harvesting eagle feathers is illegal, unless you are a Native American, to prove you are, you have to register.

Every rock is sacred, every rock is great, if a rock get stepped on by a white dude, the Great Spirit gets quite irate...

The national park and forest services frequently just let fires burn for this reason. I don't know why they're fighting the one in TFA, but apparently they decided it was a good idea.

In Sequoia National Park they use to put out all the forest fires. Then a couple big ones got out of control and killed a bunch of the great trees. They learned that letting some of the fires burn off the underbrush periodically actually saves the sequoias because they can live through those fires. It's when there's tons of underbrush and the fire gets that much bigger and more concentrated that they die.

This being from Arcata, CA, I can assume that these are not Indians. These are hippies with tans who don't want firefighters to accidentally trample through their ancient Indian pot-growing sites.

You are not under any compulsion to register - unless you want your special privileges. If you just want to be a regular citizen like me, and live in the world, you don't have to register with anybody - as you well know. Whiny liar.

"If fire should move in naturally, we're comfortable with that," Peters said. "But if you bring a drip torch into the Vatican and intend to ignite it, you are going to have some opposition."

I think this analogy needs a little work.

What the hell is it with Indian burial grounds and horror movies anyway?

Well, this is going to sound bad, but, maybe its because native americans got the crap kicked out of them in the 19th instead of the 20th century. If you had fought and lost a war with the US today, we would spend billions and billions of dollars helping you redevelop (see Germany, Japan, Iraq). You made the same mistake the Mexicans did, and got your asses kicked back when we would just take what we wanted and leave you the scraps, laughing about how we won.

I think it's because - and this is a long shot - that's where the fire was.

I guess it's racist to allow some colors to harvest the feathers while denying that right to others.

My father gave me a book on our ancestry and it was a story of how my ancestors ran their cattle into Klamath River Indian territory and then started shooting the Indians and ended up getting ambushed and killed.
Of course the cavalry came in and massacred the Indians and took their land cause they were savages don't ya know.
