I am not even going to attempt to play that game.

Why?

All the farking Trek nerds will do nothing but berate each other and the "newbs" due to their lack of knowledge of the series all the way down to the pigment of the 534th green alien blob that Captain James Tiberius Kirk put his past our century penis into and created Tribbles as a mutant offspring.

Go fark a phaser.

I'd play the borg.

I don't know, those WoW freaks are pretty nerder-rific.

2008-08-11 08:04:09 PM
I'd be a Horta, and have a starship made out of solid rock.

It would actually be *named* the USS Rock and wouldn't even need shields. Any time the ship got attacked, it would just ram the opposing ship. And then the crew would just melt through the hull and eat the other ship.

2008-08-11 08:05:20 PM
Oh and the emblem for the USS Rock would be a rock.

and the motto would be YES KILL YOU.

Oh and the shuttlecraft would be named PAIN and MONSTERS.

Nobody would screw with the USS Rock. Unless they wanted to get melted into piles of smoky burned flesh.

As someone who plays WoW and a Star Trek fan, yes this will be the geekiest game of all time. And I will play it.

2008-08-11 08:22:59 PM
I'll hold off a bit on playing until I hear from people who have actually played the game. People had high hopes for Star Wars Galaxies and look where that went.

Although the SWGemu project looks to be promising...

I generally don't care for MMORPGs too much, and I'm by no means a Trekkie, but I liked TNG enough that I'd try this out. I'm surprised no one's thought of it before now.

Not if I can get my dream project off the ground.

Feel the magic!
Feel the degredation!
Feel whatever you have to, as long it powers you up with booze!

You're in the drivers seat - but careful or your Gypsy Caravan will spin OUT OF CONTROL!

YOU'RE Tyrone Powers in Nightmare Alley - Online!

Coming soon.

I'm sorry but until HL2 Episode 3 comes out I can't bring myself to get excited about any games. About a week ago I got a wild hair and pulled out some old school Command and Conquer. God that takes me back...

2008-08-11 09:57:12 PM
I dunno. I don't think it's going to be terribly good. It doesn't strike me as an MMO friendly setting.

2008-08-11 09:58:44 PM
The biggest problem is that when you start the game, you are issued a red shirt and the rank of ensign, and are promptly tossed into a level 50 mission, with permadeath rules in place.

2008-08-11 10:00:17 PM
I'm really jonesing for the new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, you get to be a sith and go around killing people. I can't wait.

What I'm curious about is how this game will play. I mean, are you going to have a million Federation starships flying around? How do guilds work, if they even exist? Do you level up by grinding on halpless life forms you're "discovering," or through successfully completing missions (with bonus points for following the morals of what species you are)?

What I was hoping (which I doubt they'll do), is that people can take on specific roles in one ship to make it even stronger. Like one guy can concentrate on engineering, and now that ship moves faster/is stronger than it would be as default. And if that player isn't online, then an npc engineer takes over and the stats are back to default. And whoever has the highest rank at that time is the one who controls the ship.

I'm really beginning to see this game as just an EVE clone with a Star Trek theme wrapped around it.

Phat Loots for the ships?

Perhaps at least it won't have the hideously overblown player economy.

I am a Star Trek fan...and this game is already BOH-RING!

2008-08-11 10:18:20 PM
What I was hoping (which I doubt they'll do), is that people can take on specific roles in one ship to make it even stronger. Like one guy can concentrate on engineering, and now that ship moves faster/is stronger than it would be as default

Every player has their own ship, the crew are pets. But your captain does have a 'class', like Janeway was a scientist and Picard was a wine snob.

That was the original plan but it was scrapped. And I can see why. Who wants to play a game where you're stuck in engineering or the sickbay all day long? Everyone wants to be on the bridge, dammit!

I have a WoW character, night elf druid which is at like level 45 or something. There are people who play that game 24/7/365. That's the reason some people call it Warcrack. There are elements of the game that can be fun but the truth is that's it's difficult to be good at that game without putting massive amount of time into it, with lots of friends. In many ways, it's the Amway of the video game world.

Also, many of the people who play that game are nice, helpful people. If people interacted in real life they way they interacted in that, the world might actually be a better place.

Holy crap I just watched the Horta episode on my TOS boxed set.

I'd probably play - not because I expect to be able to put in the time to be a high level player, nor because I particularly enjoy MMOs (I hate people), but because the teeny tiny bit of information I've gleened from the releases says there'll be lots of exploring. and I like exploring.

Befuddled: How long has this game been in development? I thought I remembered hearing about this game being in development about five years ago.

It was being developed by a different company. They went bankrupt after a massive failure called "Gods and Heroes" and the IP was purchased by Cryptic Studio's (the developers of City of Heroes/City of Villains) They've probably had the IP rights for about 6 months now. I think it's in better hands now.

Weaver95: I'd play the borg.

Trying the amp up that conservative cred, eh Weaver? :)

Seriously though, I hope it's good. I MUCH prefer the perpetual idea of being able to be a variety of things, not just a ship captain, that way a "group" would control 1 ship, and a guild would control a small fleet or one very large ship. However, I like space MMOs, and this ones my friends might actually play.

Cryptic knows what they are doing, but I think that may be a problem. MMOs need someone to kick them in the nuts with new ideas, not follow a formula. For now it looks kind of like they took the CoH engine, made trek themed attacks, removed the cool movement, and added ship combat. Star Trek shouldn't be about combat.

Perpetual's game sounded like early Star Wars Galaxies, a great idea for an MMO that not a huge number of people would play. Cryptic's seems more like a standard MMO with a trek theme. WoW with ships and phasors.

Hopefully it's at least Eve Online with phasers.

and allows them to indulge in ship-to-ship combat

One thing that irked me about Star Trek about ship to ship combat; why aren't there any missiles seen in combat? In DS9, the Dominion would use their ships to ram the Federation, destroying both, so why wouldn't one side develop specialized "ships", unmanned robots programmed to ram the enemy ships? Just be small, fast, shielded, and very numerious. The Klingons and Romulans could even use cloaked missiles.

From what I've read, there are a few default races (of which they've only revealed humans and klingons) but there is a species creator you can use to make your own race. Probably using a variation on the awesome City of Heroes character creator.

Eve is a good MMO to play from the perspective that you don't need to play to improve your skills. This is because the skilling is time based. It is possible to be a serious and casual gamer simultaneously.

Having said that, doing more gets you more money, so you can buy better stuff, so it can be addictive in that sense.

Still, it is a fun game, and not even the greatest sci fi writer could dream up the kinda things that happen in eve.

"Let me tell you a secret No.1," puts a "shushing" finger to his lips, "nothing compares to holding the reins."

i think I will have to sign up and become addicted to this one just so I can warp all over the damn galaxy.

It'll be a short-term distraction to all of the geeks who already play WoW, who will return to WoW in a week to two months time.

Boritom: Aarontology: DarthBrooks: I'd be a Horta, and have a starship made out of solid rock.

It would actually be *named* the USS Rock and wouldn't even need shields. Any time the ship got attacked, it would just ram the opposing ship. And then the crew would just melt through the hull and eat the other ship.

You know what's going to suck?

When you see me in the USS Paper coming at your ass with my Tholian inspired Paper Cage. And my mighty College Ruled Paper Fighters.

I'm Captain Slicer of the U.S.S. Scissors, and... need I make a cutting remark? You know what's coming.

I'll be the USS Pussy, cause Pussy always beats paper rock and scissors.

As long as there aren't any damn Blood Elves in the game, it's all good.

I was totally psyched about this game when Perpetual had it. The thought of being able to choose several different career paths was very awesome. Now it looks like all we can do is fly our own ship and go on missions. I'm worried this is going to destroy any interaction and character development there once was.

Weaver95: I'd play the borg.

In order to become borg you will have to seek out and unlock 8 holocrons Collective Cubes and follow the instructions it gives you.

With the change in developers and direction, it really feels like they're taking Pirates of the Burning Sea, slapping Star Trek models/textures into it, and letting it fly!

If this is supposed to be about exploration (in lieu of ship-to-ship combat), why not have "guilds"? Just call them "Away Teams".

At the beginning, all of the starship captains would be AI. The AI captain chooses the exploration missions. After getting a lot of career experience on away teams, a player could become captain. Captains get to decide where and what to explore and would also engage in ship-to-ship combat. Get captain experience by exploring new planets and winning (or avoiding) battles, then use those credits to buy upgrades to your ship (and more away teams).

Add in a few ST star-faring species for role-playing purposes (each with its own advantages and disadvantages) and the game could be pretty open-ended. If everyone starts out as a starship captain, what's the point of playing?

Ergh, it'll probably just be another point and click game,

I'm much more interested in Jumpgate Evolution, I prefer to actually fly my ship with wonderful twitch-combat MMO-ey goodness. Besides Movie/TV tie in games tend to suck.

Meh, I'm waiting for the Warhammer 40k MMO. I don't care for this sissy federation bs, to boldly go where know man has gone before... Nah, I'll take, In the grim future there is only war.

I came here to say this.

Among Sci-Fi settings, there is an inverse correlation between the answers to "Would this be a good Universe to actually live in?" and "Is it a good setting for gaming?"

I want to live in a Holodeck Suite, but I want to GAME with The Emperor and the Grey Knights at my back.

/Though watching Kirk try to hit on Ephrael Stern would be AWESOME - and not necessarily for the reasons you think.
