I'm just curious as to why Obama isn't winning by a landslide right now. He's no more socialist than any other mainstream democrat, the last 8 years have been nothing but pure misery and McCain is running on Bush platforms. If Bush has an approval rating of 30%, why should McCain's popularity be any higher?

It's only the beginning of August. The campaign season doesn't really begin until September.

Obama is saving all his money for the fall. Things are going to teeter at roughly 45/40 for awhile, then sometime this fall, things are going to break heavily for Obama. Given the enthusiasm gap, plus the probable breaking of undecideds for Obama, there's a solid chance of an Obama landslide this fall. By landslide, I mean Obama winning by %55 or more.

I actually tend to agree with you that the polls are misleading. I think BO is much farther ahead than the polls indicate. That said, much of his support comes from young people who while they get excited and show up at rock star events like Obama's but generally don't bother to vote.

As for the Dem talking point that McCain is another Bush it's really sad that anyone even tries to peddle that nonsense. In fact, those who make that claim only prove their ignorance or utter dishonesty. McCain has a long track record and is CLEARLY not like Bush.

In defense of John Edwards, he's probably going to be a widower in the next few years.

He has two kids still in the 35,000 square foot mansion house that need parenting, and those sammiches aren't gonna make themselves. I'm guessing he's not much help with algebra homework.

(later this evening, in an uncomfortable mansion in the Carolinas)
C'mon baby, lot's of guys have fooled around after their wives had a double mastectomy. That's just nature taking its course, baby. It's not about us, darling.

She and her baby will stay in the Maid's Quarters until things quiet down, and you won't even know they're there. The two of you might even become friends if you gave her half a chance.

Many many democrats used Edwards as an example of traditional family values, talking about how he was sticking by his wife. Many even went so far as to say that he was better than Newt Gingrich because he didn't leave her side during her cancer like Newt did.

Look...this goes on on both sides, and frankly...I don't think we should be tolerant of it on EITHER side. Clinton, Gingrich, Edwards, etc, etc, etc...whichever side, anyone doing this deserves to be voted out next time there's an election.

It's called bad judgement, and just because it's their "personal life" doesn't mean that it wasn't bad judgement.

With this new revelation, I still don't give a shiat. An affair is an issue between him and his wife. If his wife comes out and says she has no problem with it, that either she gave him permission or she has forgiven him long before this became public, then all this is even more stupid than it already is.

And in other news, our economy is going to shiat and we are still stuck in a needless war.

Which makes me so glad that we have Mister Morals currently in the White House, restoring dignity and respect to that office.

Befuddled: With this new revelation, I still don't give a shiat. An affair is an issue between him and his wife.

Tell that to all the people that donated to his campaign. This is a guy that watched the last democratic president get impeached for having an affair. And he runs for that office knowing that he was doing the same thing.

When you live a public life like he chose to, something like this is not a private matter.

Yukon Callmeal: Is Vitter's career over, is Craig's career over, wasn't Gingrich just on a Sunday gabfest?

The one in the middle, I think so.

The other two-- you aren't getting the point. Unless Vitter did something like have his PAC pay his lover $115K to do a job she was unqualified for, and had a campaign aide claim to be the one who knocked her up, or unless Gingrich had 'friends' who may have 'without his knowledge' been paying off his slam-piece, then it isn't the same.

If Edwards cheated, then he's no different than McCain, Guiliani, Clinton, Gary Hart, and on and on and on.

That he did so while running for President (which as others have noted is incredibly arrogant and reckless) makes it a little more meaningful, but not much.

But there was graft here. At least $114K's worth. There was a coverup that may include a campaign aide claiming as his a kid that isn't (do you take Edwards' denial at face value?). We need to weed out who was involved in paying off this woman as they are corrupt and unfit to be around offices of power. This isn't about an affair. It is about corruptly using campaign funds to enable an affair (and keep it quiet).

Actually I do get the point. You said his career was over. I'm saying it might not be because look at these other examples of politicians involved in sex scandals and their careers aren't necessarily over.

2008-08-08 08:19:50 PM
I heard you're supposed to wait at least 20 years after an affair to run for president or else you get cramps and drown.

CravenMorehead: When you live a public life like he chose to, something like this is not a private matter.

It should be. I don't vote for people based on this stupid shiat. You only have to look back over then past ten years to see why doing so is incredibly dumb.

The Republicans have been 100% fail when they try to run on their policies and goals. So they've changed the argument into one of morality and now they do win so they can implement their incredibly immoral policies.

/would still vote for Edwards

2008-08-08 08:22:25 PM

AeAe: Peter von Nostrand: admission it's dumb. However, if you think it fits then that would mean that just about any leader of any organization or any prominent person would then be the messiah. Maybe you should lay off the right

Don't be an idiot. I didn't say it was dumb. I said it was hyperbole and applies here. If you're going to dismiss my comments because I chose an unusual word, that's your perogative.

Actually I'm dismissing your comments because they are trite. You seem to be a reasonable person, so you should lay off the right wing inanity.

Did it strike anyone here as odd that Edwards' statement included that line about "if any of my friends had paid her off, it was done without my knowledge?"

Now we know why he said that. (new window)

2008-08-08 08:24:37 PM
Peter von Nostrand, this is not a sex scandal. It is a scandal that involves sex and a whole lot of cash being paid to a mistress, both before the affair was ended (hell, if you believe Edwards, the payoffs started before the affair) and after.

Again, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you on that. I don't know this angle about the payoff but if so that does add another dimension to it. All I'm saying is that by and large America is a very forgiving country and has a way of letting scandals pass if they involve someone that can be an inspirational and effective leader. I don't think his career is done, if you do that's cool with me. It's just like.. an opinion... man!

I don't think his career is done

It might not be. I think it was done before this-- a one term Senator, failed VP candidate, two-time failed Presidential nominee candidate.

All that was left to salvage at this point was a cabinet position (which is now out of the question) and some speaking fees.

I think he's done-- but as you said, it's just an opinion.

If you are a morally bankrupt heathen, run as a morally bankrupt heathen. If you are an upstanding family man with Christian principles, run as same.

Problem is, most of the power-hungry politicians are the former living in districts/states of the latter and can't get in to power without shift-shaping their images.

Hence we have a Rockefeller who couldn't win in New York so he moved to WV. Good thing he is on the way out because WV is becoming increasingly red and he may not make it next time. Same with the Grand Wizard of the KKK, Senator Byrd.

Obama is hyper defensive when off-script, and comes across as an arrogant prack when challenged on his policies and flip-flops.

This gives the appearance of someone petty and not ready for the national stage.

Oh, and those nice little essays he wrote for the papers when he was a State Senator have a nice Congressional Black Caucus ring to them. I like to print them out and take them to picnics. Makes for some interesting conversations when I explain the post-racial candidate is quite racist.

Then why the fark did you mention 'but but McCain' in the first place. You are the one who brought his name up, and then when someone says they are both a$$holes, you say McCain has nothing to do with it? Then don't farking bring him up!

-----------------

There is no comparison between Edwards cheating and McCain's deal.

McCain left a hot young wife for another hot young rich wife 27 years ago. Edwards was poking an unattractive 45 year old while his older homely wife is dying of cancer.
