drjekel_mrhyde: This might be good in a way for Obama for the short term cause it takes away the war in Georgia for a few days maybe weeks

Holy shiat you must be dumb, what does Obama and Georgia have to do with this? You get dropped on the head as a baby?

PirateKing: He needs to take a look at the man in the mirror. He's bad, but this issue is more than black or white. He knows that when he admits "the girl is mine" the media will look at it like some kind of thriller.

coco ebert: Anyone think that maybe the wife knew about his indiscretions? I'm not saying it doesn't hurt, but maybe they had an agreement. She seems even more passionate about the causes than he does. Maybe she felt like it was a relationship that worked that way.

It's not impossible that she approved of the affair if she thought she was dying. Open marriages would not be totally uncommon in situations like that.

Sadly though, probably not.

Agreed.

Those saying "who cares" are unreal. At a *minimum*, the guy had his PAC send his lover $114 to do a job for which she had no qualifications, while he was running for President.

Jesus built my hybrid:

JFK had multiple affairs. Everybody knew it including his own spouse. Since he was a great president nobody cared.

I wasn't alive then but as far as I know the media also kept a safe distance regarding these things, kind of comparable to the French press. The didn't pry too much.
I don't know, do we want a media that chooses not to report on such things thus leading to a type of self-censorship? Oh wait, we already have that except they censor themselves regarding silly, unimportant things like false reasons for war.

LibertyFirst: SaltyDonnie: This guy is the perfect example of thinking someone can be a complete mass of rotting shiat at home, but a pillar of virtue at the office, like flicking a light switch."Sure he beats his kids, cheats on his wife, and steals from his mother, but I trust him with my tax dollars."

"He seems like a normal guy." Psychos are like that.

Any douche who'd do this to his wife will screw you too. Character does matter, it's not everything, but it does matter. Just look at Obama. Most Obama supporters I talk to like his character and intelligence more than any specific policy and think he is an honorable man.

honorable? really?

Obama is a politician. He will reverse his position on something if it's politically expedient *cough* public campaign financing *cough*, *cough* NAFTA *cough*

Everybody knew they were gay, and they know they are gay, I don't see how the secret bordello run by Frank's partner without his knowledge, etc. and teenage gay sex(Studds) has to do with older married Republican men craving the cock like Coo Coo craves Co Co Puffs.

Two snarky thought occurred to me:

1. Well, he was hoping for VICE president.

2. Since his wife is terminal maybe he was just trying to help her along by trying to kill her with the shock or making her want to die from embarrassment. You know, to save money on treatment and stuff.

The moral thing to do would've been to have waited until his wife were lying on her deathbed and then have served her divorce papers.

Mnemia It's not impossible that she approved of the affair if she thought she was dying. Open marriages would not be totally uncommon in situations like that.

If there was anything mitigating like that here, he would have mentioned it. He gave the weak mitigations he had, after all (I didn't love her, it was over more than a year ago, the kid isn't mine).

As someone said in the other thread (paraphrased), the arrogance required to carry on like this, when running for president, with a wife dying of cancer, is just staggering.

Not really staggering. His previous career was personal injury attorney.

Yukon Callmeal: If there was anything mitigating like that here, he would have mentioned it. He gave the weak mitigations he had, after all (I didn't love her, it was over more than a year ago, the kid isn't mine).

Good point. Although, if he was lying before he might be lying now.

2008-08-08 04:21:30 PM
Mnemia: I definitely agree with this, but he put the interests of his party and all his supporters at extreme risk by doing this and continuing his campaign. The campaign is more important than his personal life.

Lies beget lies. More bad decisions. He definitely could have handled this better, and if he hadn't run, or if he'd dropped out a lot sooner, this may never have come to light.

Of course, none of this would have happened if he hadn't gone astray in the first place. But we have no idea of the circumstances.

He is a Democrat, after all. He may have had his wife's blessing if he was discreet. We don't know. Doesn't change how it looks in a Western Ethically Puritanical society like America, but we don't know.

And, bottom line, he still hasn't broken any laws we know of, unless it is his and he's been a deadbeat dad (but for that to be criminal, I think she'd have had to take him to court for support).

As AGs go, this would be personally unethical. And in a morally relativistic sense, it's not nearly as bad as anything the last couple AGs have done, while in office. Or presidents.

I think the issue of "why was he holding the kid if it wasn't his" is a stupid question.

I'm still friends with a guy I had a long-term relationship with before I met my husband and had a baby.

I have pictures of him holding my baby without my husband around. In a hotel room. Alone with me and the baby.

Doesn't mean a thing. Honestly.

Nestea Plunge - Yeah, you got me. Republicans who fail in their personal lives are treated as hypocrites. Democrats like Studds, who was poking underage House pages, or Barney Frank, who's housemate was running a gay brothel out of their townhouse? No problem - no moral standards whatsoever = No hypocrisy.

Guess, with that logic, we should only elect the lowest slime buckets out there? Easier to just shrug everything off...

I would imagine politicians cheat on their spouses at a much higher rate than average citizens.

A lot of citizens actually have a conscience.

Politicians? Well, they wouldn't be in that line of work if they did.
