I've noticed that lighter skinned people are far less threatening than darker skinned people.

I guess they changed her hair also. There is nothing like different lighting that just screams RACISM.

/Damn, give it a rest.

Seems like someone is just looking for something to complain about. Even Beyonce's camp is all whateva.

i would think its just the insane amount of lighting used on a photo shoot... some white chicks look like ghosts in there shots. so is it not the same effect?

I dunno, dudes. It doesn't really look accidental to me. That said, she is on the light side naturally and they are making too big a deal out of it.

Who is it making the fuss? Cause no one really seems to care....

Why do I keep using italics? When will the madness end?

Who is that chick? The one with the annoying voice? No, not that one, the other one? Yeah, her.

What was the question?

Who cares? Magazine photos are so highly edited I'm surprised she even looks human in that picture.

They're a lot less subtle about it in Asia. In China, Thailand, and Malaysia every single cosmetic product is advertised as "skin lightening". Speaking as a long-term victim of yellow fever I find that sad.

So what if they did? They want to appeal to a larger demographic than just black women, you know.

When I read things like this, is gives me hope. It seems to me that if people can find the time and energy to complain about something like this, we aren't in nearly as bad shape as I thought we were.

Jesus Christ.

No uproar when celebs model fake tan lotion.

Why?

Because it's farking stupid.

In Europe they advertise skin taning lotions, in Asia skin lightening lotions and nobody gives a fark...but in the U.S. first issue to come up is YOU ARE RACIST!!!!

So if they can just send me the address of the wig maker, my hair will be as amazing as Beyonce.

I don't know if it IS just lighting, but even if you look at older pictures of Oprah, she used to be (or just appear) darker too. I've noticed that it seems to happen only with females. I've never noticed a lightening of any famous black guys.

It seems to me many American blacks are not really black at all.

Sure, many have African facial features, but also tan skin that would hardly get them called black in places like Africa or Brazil.

Irregular pigmentation in the older skin or atrophy in the adipose tissue due to ageing could be the causes. But in her case it's make up, lightning, and retouching.

Define being black? What, then makes someone black? Society? Your heritage?

They messed with the brightness and settings in Photoshop on the entire picture.

Oh, okay, well, I don't have an answer on that either. I've noticed there seems to be more emphasis on someone's skin colour in the States. Don't know why, but have been curious about that.

/have you noticed the "quotation" button next to someone's name? Try to use it some times.

Of course they lightened her skin, magazines do this all the time to enhance the perception that "lighter" women are more beautiful. That's why you get Black and Asian women seeking cosmetics that lighten and in extreme cases, getting surgery to lighten the skin permanently or, in the case of Asians, having eye surgery to make them more round-eyed.

How many US "most beautiful" lists are topped by a member of Black, Asian, or other visible minority? White women are constantly epitomized and presented as the end-all be-all standard of beauty.

/They most certainly are NOT.
