I do repos. Miss one payment, and we pick up the car.
It's rather amusing, always the same people in the cycles. They don't ever bring in the cash until the car is popped. Go to their houses to get the car, and they've got plasma Tvs mounted on the wall, the car being repo'd has new wheels, kickass stereo. They raise hell that the car is getting repo'd. Then they whip out their iPhones or Blackberries and start calling up their buddies. LOL - DUR, people!

... oh, and I carry, too. :)

Rapmaster2000: Tom_Slick: SuperCrackMonkey: Those joints also sell insurance through companies where you pay for insurance weekly. Just don't get hit by one, they're uninsured!

The one good thing GA has done is required all insurance coverage to be verified before you can register your car. This has eliminated this scam. There are still uninsured motorists, but they are easy to spot, they do not have a license plate on their car.

Are those the "Tag Applied For" people I see all over Georgia? That has always confused me.

Those are Georgia Farkers jealous of Florida.

People still use Faxes?

iirc, legal and medical offices still use fax, because at times a paper trail needs to be maintained. The only difference in the wild between repossession and a grand theft auto charge, is probably that signed and faxed piece of paper.

Believe it or not, sometimes you still need things down on paper. Especially when those things are legal documents entitling the recipient to repossess several thousand dollars worth of motor vehicle.

He also said he carries.

Only retard repo men carry weapons. You will get crucified in court for using said weapon since you're basically looking for a reason to use it when you steal people's cars.

It has nothing to do with the story. These situations are created by the fact that EVERYBODY thinks they are ENTITLED to EVERYTHING they want. If these asshats would simply quit spending and living beyond their means, this would be a moot point. ;-)

A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a moot point. Suddenly someone'll say, like, moot, or point, or moot point out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

You really should read up a bit on "ownership". The bank owns the title, therefore the bank owns the car. Repossessing is not stealing. I'd take your bet.

Ummm.. Most repo guys have to stay friendly w/ LEO.. And usually let them know when they are yanking a car they've found.

I knew a guy w/ a Stealth Repo kit in the bed of his Chevy 3500 dually.

the whole thing was hydraulic and unfolded out to be a full tow rig. If he parked in front of you, he could have you up and strapped in for the ride inside of 2 minutes. Watched him yank a car out a bar one night.. Funny shiat.

/He had a .45 and the helper usually had a 9mm.

Rapmaster2000: Are those the "Tag Applied For" people I see all over Georgia? That has always confused me.

Yes, the real temp tags have an expiration date with a silver stripe down the middle.

darkscout: All they do in Indiana is sign up, go through the process, get the plate and then cancel the insurance. Sure they still have the cards and the plate but they're not insured.

In Georgia the insurance companied have to report when the policy is canceled, if you do not have insurance and you have a car registered you get fined, your license gets suspended, and the registration get invalidated. Some smaller counties will actually send a police officer out to collect the tags.

Are you at least allowed to take the gas out before they tow your car? I mean...it's your gas...

My first experience with a repo when i was around 17 and I had some friend that was around 20. He had some POS car that sat on his front lawn and never ran. he always told me he was going to get around to 'fixing' it.

Then one day the car vanished. I asked what happened and he said the repo man took it.

I was baffled that he was making payments on a POS car that did not run...

I wonder if there is any way to estimate the total percentage of the GDP that is supported almost completely by poor people?

If you total up what collection businesses earn, plus all the money spent on lottery tickets, Yoo-HooTM , Check-Into-CashTM, and Basic Ultra'sTM it has to run into the billions of dollars annually.

Must be different per state. It doesn't matter, I don't plan on being in that situation. The only thing I make payments on is my house and I overpay. When I buy a car, I pay it all up front in cash.

We had a repo once when we filed bankruptcy after my boy was born. We were in a bad neighborhood so there was no way we were going to leave the keys in the car for them. We made them come to the door. They were very reluctant. But then I'm not crazy. We had the car all cleaned out for them and just handed the keys over.

It's not like when you discharge an auto debt you can just drop the car off at the dealer. Repo men do a service.

Oh and, don't buy stuff on Sears credit. I used to work in the banko department there and they will reposess your shiat. It used to be my job to make lists of what you bought that they can take back. Miserable, soul-killing job.

Snarfangel - Go ahead and take the car, but the gas is mine!

Guy I used to work with had his truck repo'd in the parking lot. He ran out and got all in a rage and said "Fine! Fine! Fine! Take it! But that's MY goddamn battery!!!"

Then he threw open the hood... took the battery out and flung it about 30 yards across the parking lot.

tuna fingers: You really should read up a bit on "ownership". The bank owns the title, therefore the bank owns the car. Repossessing is not stealing. I'd take your bet.

Not exactly. The bank merely has a lien on the title, they do not own the title. Otherwise they would be the ones responsible for registering and paying taxes on it.

Self-repossession is not guaranteed to them. To be within the law, a repo man is supposed to stop his activity if the owner of the vehicle tells them to; a repo must not disturb the peace.
The lien-holder must then go to court and take the vehicle back through legal channels (they'll of course be granted this by the court).

You can say they own the car in a metaphorical sense, but legally and physically they do not--they merely have the legal recourse to take ownership if the contract terms are not met.

It was indeed a sight to see... all the funnier/stranger because while the guy was a very large dude, he was, as the ladies might put it, "a big teddy bear."

Repossession is a "Self Help" recourse for the holder of a secured interest in personal property. Secured Transactions is the only area of law where "Self Help" is still allowed (i.e. a Landlord CANNOT do essentially the same thing to a tenant who hasn't paid rent by putting all the tenant's belongings on the sidewalk.)

The rub with repossession is that it can't breach the peace. Meaning, the repo man isn't allowed to do anything likely to cause a fight. Misuse of color of law (i.e. impersonating an officer) is a per se breach of the peace. Taking the property over a debtor's objection is a breach of the peace. Teh debtor can be the meekest person on the planet, and just barely muster up the courage to mutter "please don't" and that is enough that the repo man has to walk away.

tl:dr - Repossession is legal, it's not stealing. But the debtor can object ant the repo man has to honor that objection. At least, that's the New York law I learned for the Bar Exam.

Tractor Trailers are being reposed at alarming rate these days too. But i know one guy who told me he has $20,000 in debt but he just leased a truck where he pays $1800 a month. And he's already complaining about not being able to make the first months payment. go figure.
