(WGAL 8)   The repo man understands the economy is bad. He knows gas is through the roof. He feels your pain. But he's still taking your car. "The past six months have been through the roof. My fax machine is non-stop"   (wgal.com) divider line 210

I dated a girl who's dumbass brother had two different cars of his repo'd. His mother co-signed for the second one, and his interest was something 12% because his credit was awful by then. Sure enough, his new 4-Runner was repo'd 8 months later.

In a very ghetto part of town in Anchorage I witnessed a repo man take back a car in the middle of the day.. in his words "these thugs are sleeping right now, I usually do this at night".

He also said he carries.

I know a guy who does repos, he does the same thing he calls the m night 'hoods. He told me the safest time to take a car there is about 10 a.m. He also has a contract with a buy here, pay here that places GPS units in the cars, if people don't pay the doesn't start, he just plugs the GPS coordinates in to his truck and goes to find the car. He calls ghetto geo-cacheing.

I could never be a repo man. I've seen the reality shows that follow them around, and I just don't have the heart to do that to people. True, they, the debtors, have a responsibility to pay their bills, but I couldn't repo their items, especially when it comes to rural people with children, who have no means of transportation to get to work and get the kids to school, getting their cars repoed. The job is tough. It takes a certain type of person to do it, but it's not an authoritaraian job like being a police officer. I suppose they get used to it.

This reminds me, my car needs inspected. It needs shocks and brakes.

I need to come up with about $300 and my car will be driveable for the next year.

I'll let that just sink into all of you $9/hr $500 a month car payment folks.

(hint: You don't deserve any more than you can get somebody to pay you)

Repo man is on that short list of jobs where being strapped is pretty much obligatory. Right up there with process server and armored truck driver.

I wonder how many months of not paying before your car gets repo'd. I know people that haven't made a house payment in a year and still have their houses.

The good news is, the GPS car owners never argue they just hand him the keys. They know the car won't run unless they pay so they just hand it over.

See, the problem with that is that the GPS unit needs an antenna to receive the GPS signal, and an antenna to transmit that data (probably via the cellphone networks) back to the car dealer/repo man.

A little aluminum foil and tape would take care of that problem. Just go ahead and search the car for the transmitter/receiver, find the antennas, and cover them so that they are useless.

Of course, this would require a bit of knowledge on the part of the person who bought the vehicle in the first place, and if you are buying a car from a place like that, you probably aren't that smart to begin with.

FTFA: In the last six months, his business of "picking up" has really been picking up.

ooh, clever. did you think of that on your own? because actually, his business is "taking".

the repo's job is to take the vehicle. they're not the bank, they're not the police, they're not the auto dealer. they don't want to hear a story, they don't want trouble, they just want to do their job.

(sometimes repo can be a woman. a big, scary woman.)

The best part of those places is the gimmick that they'll pay off your old car. They won't, they'll make your loan bigger to cover the balance on your old car. You'll still be paying for it, but you'll be paying them instead of the other guys.

Then they advertise the $99/month car loans. ($99 a month for 120 months.)

Or $99/month for the first 6 months, then it jumps to 900000% APR.
