Just read an article about this in our student rag (not Berkeley). Turns out these are not even ancient irreplaceable trees, they were planted by the university itself not too long ago. And the university vowed to plant three new ones for every one they cut down for the stadium annex.

So yeah, I like trees as much as the next guy, but this is pretty silly.

Little tidbit about the Berkeley spirit: The university supplies water and energy bars to the protesters living in the trees.

I remember these types from The Evergreen State College back in the '80s. Same. Same, same, same.

When planning their drum circle protests, they all got excited about every single thing they thought-up. There was never anyone in the room to say, "Hang on. That last idea might make us look like silly cliches. Let's not do that one."

We have the same problem at UCSC. I think the best way to force them out of the trees is with a fire hose. It may not knock them out, but they will give up very fast. Hippies hate water because A) it cleans them, and B) it gets their bud wet.

Seriously, if you went around planting trees in rational places, most people would just leave 'em. It would seem to be a better use of your time than living in one tree for two years just to save it. They grow by themselves ya know.
