This.

Also, isn't an increase in alcohol sales generally a bad thing? Especially if its correlated with a downturn in the economy?

I lived in Corydon, Iowa, in the early 90s (Town motto: The closest McDonald's is 75 miles away.) Everyone I knew who was my age (mid-20s then) was a recovering alcoholic. Yep, about the only thing to do there is drink.

I for one, am doing my part. I even buy beer from that walk-in in the picture.

drink and get high is all there is to do in most of the state. Also, we have a humongous meth problem.

I'm still in my early 20s. I binge drink on average 3 days a week and drink every other night in moderation. How long can I last until I have to actually start worrying about my liver?

As a recovering alcoholic, I have an answer for you ... they say that it is anyone's guess how much your liver can handle. Everyone's liver is different. Some livers can handle years and years of abuse, while other people, well, their liver goes bust after a short period of abuse, like a year or two.

Um, I'd be a little more worried about the addiction than how long your liver can hold out...I think your saving grace is that your liver does have the ability to regenerate itself, so I'd cut back...

What sucks is that all Iowa beer and liquor wholesale distibutors have to buy from the State. The distributors then provide the bars, liquor stores, and grocery stores. Iowans are at the mercy of the state on what we can purchase - for example, Fat Tire and all the New Belgium beers have been available for less than 1 year, and you cannot find or buy Arrogant Bastard or many other fine microbrews, as the STATE has decided we can't have it.

/IT'S TYRANNY!!

You would be surprised how resilient the liver actually is. It can take tremendous damage yet still regrow but every organ has limitations. I would recommend supplementing your diet with Milk Thistle and Burpleurem and alpha-lipoic-acid; it may sound hokey but these herbs have amazing hepatocyte protecting properties. I have been a really hard drinker for decades but with consideration of my liver health. To my amazement I had the poor old organ checked out through diagnostic tests and it supposedly within normal limits.

/Milk Thistle and Silymarin!

As being from near the MN/IA border (MN side), I will have to agree with that statement. It's amazing what corn does to a young female body (in a good way).

No doubt. I've been in every state in the U.S., and lived in Iowa for five. Walk around W. Des Moines, and its hard to find hotter.

It's also home of the MILF. MILF's are not my cup of tea, but West Des Moines is littered with hot moms.

As for the increase in consumption? My guess is growth. The Des Moines area has seen a pretty nice growth boom. Wages are on par with the rest of the midwest and Cost of Living is 11% lower on average.

Throw in very low commute times and safe communities, and it's a become a place companies are putting up new offices or relocating. (Wells Fargo)

Of all the cities I have been in, West Des Moines is where I'd throw my money into a business. The people I worked for believed the same thing and made a killing on farmland that is now commercial real estate.
