I'll blame the ants long before I'll blame the dog.

Ants are just embodied insectoid evil.

Oh shut up you assholes. A good owner trains a pit bull to not attack kids when they start to scream. Just like a good owner trains an English setter to point, a hound to sniff, and a chihuahua to run around randomly. It's all in the training. Nurture over nature. I can train a Yorkie to be just like a pit bull. I can train a pit bull to be a great herder. Genetics smenetics.

We were on a field trip to eastern NC and one of our teammembers had to take a leak. He chose a suitable location mostly out of our view and did his business, not knowing he was standing on a fire ant nest (it wasn't one of the big mounds, only a slight rise in the ground).

Hilarity then ensued...

Fire ants have been bad since we have been having all this rain. The rain drives them to the surface in mounds. Real easy to step on a mound in grass and not know it until they start biting you.

Bad owner, bad owner!

hosalabad: How is the Yorkie going to snap bones?

Nurture! It's all nurture. A good owner (or a bad one, depending on who you ask) can teach the Yorkie to act just like a pit bull. It has NOTHING to do with GENERATIONS of selective breeding. It is all in the type of owner you have.

You know, sometimes God tells you that you just are not loved.
In surprisingly distinct ways.

Beneath the thin veneer of civilization lies a howling madness

God does not love you.

Look at all the cruelty and misery in the world, which God does nothing to stop. Right now,
as you are reading this, there are children in various places around the world being raped
and tortured. Most of us would risk our lives, give up our lives, to save them if we could.
God stands by and does nothing. God has abandoned these children, and clearly does not
love them. God does not love you, either.

And, I think that when you see ridiculous and idiotic behavior and decision making in
other people(or in yourself), you have to consider it to be the inevitable result of the
nature of the human psyche.

"The only way to comprehend what mathematicians mean by Infinity is to contemplate
the extent of human stupidity." - Voltaire

Random pitbull question: Pitbulls and Bulldogs were from the same stock. Bulldogs were aggressive bull baiters, however, went through a breeding project to get the aggressive genes bred out. As far as I know pitbulls aren't standardized and some dogs that are called pitbulls aren't actually pitbulls. Why doesn't someone standardize the breed for show and weed out the aggressive genes like they did with bulldogs? Or is that what a Staffordshire terrier is?

2008-08-04 10:52:03 AM
Well i would just like to point out that if i wear my dogs chew toy as a hat and start to scream then he attempts to attack the 'hat' (my results are similar when doing the same while donning socks or gloves). Perhaps that is what happened in this situation.

2008-08-04 10:52:14 AM
I think all the pit bulls in the country should be relocated to Florida and assigned to each citizen.

2008-08-04 10:53:10 AM
Sheseala: Why doesn't someone standardize the breed for show and weed out the aggressive genes like they did with bulldogs?

Because there are racial differences in standardized test performance, and there are many minorities who keep pit bulls as status symbols. Thus, this would be yet another way to use standardization to elevate the status of the white man.

That, and there is no standardization necessary. It's all in the training!

Pitbulls can be the sweetest, most affectionate dogs you have ever met. Then they bite your face off.
Those are the only facts you need to consider when adopting a pitbull.

I tell you what, fire ants aren't to be farked with. I had about half a dozen bite me golfing on the 9th hole near miami. By the 11th hole I thought I was catching a cold, and I couldn't even finish the hole. I went home and took a steaming hot bath curled up like a baby, thought I was dying for the next few hours. Then just as soon as it came, I woke up from a nap and was 100% again. Weirdest thing ever, and took me a while to connect the dots. Actually, I connected the dots after I got bit again later that week :)

If it makes the Pit Bull haters feel better, I'm all in favor of just killing any asshole convicted of breeding, owning or betting on fighting dogs.

Sheseala: Why doesn't someone standardize the breed for show and weed out the aggressive genes like they did with bulldogs? Or is that what a Staffordshire terrier is?

American Staffordshire and Staffordshire terriers are the breed standard and are shown in the ring. Pitbull is really just a kind of useless term. It's used to mean anything from the purebred dogs to mutts that have any amount of bully breed.

And Am. Staffs and Staffordshires are peaceful, pleasant dogs, and any number of bully mixes are too. The problem arises when you have people who are breeding them for fighting and select dogs with poor temperaments, or people who don't know how to handle a dog. You can get dogs of any breed that display poor behaviors when they're inbred or not carefully bred.

People seem to forget that these dogs are terriers. Think of the energy of Jack Russell terriers, and think of it wrapped up in a dog that weighs 45+ pounds. They need a lot of training to reign that in.

Will someone's frigging doberman or shepard bite something?! Even a yorkie will do. I own an American pit bull, and he's a sweetie.

The dog was recently adopted. Ya don't leave ANY dog with a kid unsupervised for at least a year.

Ene anine racial profiling! ;)

I know! It's like the people who claim that a black lab is a better dog for duck hunting than a collie. How farking stupid are some people to think that genetics can lead to certain behaviors?

I KNOW! It's not like amstaffs have been bred over the years to have a mild temperament, be human friendly, and do wonderful with children! It's not like the 2% of dumbfarks that can't help but think two dogs mauling eachother is entertaining, and therefor breed their horrible tempered, beaten and often incredibly abused dogs to make some more dogs they can beat, and turn into killing machines before using a nice shiny new car battery to kill them when they aren't useful anymore! Of course! it just HAS to be the breed, could never be the owners.

probably the same idiots that claim it's the gubbmint's fault their overweight, can't find a job, and spent 1/2 their adults lives in prison!

2008-08-04 11:18:37 AM
Newsflash, it was a 6 year old. If the dog wanted to kill him, he'd be dead. Note the bites were on the head and shoulders. I hope there's a video of this. I'd be willing to bet that the kid started screaming and the dog panicked. Not knowing what to do, it did what it would do with a puppy and tried to 'scruff' the kid to carry him away. Yes, dogs have been known to do this with children.

It won't matter for the dog though, it's a pit and morans like the ones in this thread will see to it that it's killed.

/Agree that the owners were stupid if the kid was really alone with a new dog.
