Hey, Rush rules. Let's not go pushing it.

That article was one giant fail. The writer even admitted that the results are worthless because there's no way to prove whether any of the subjects actually followed through with the program or not.

30 minutes of intense excercise a day will help anyone as long as you don't shovel crap into your mouth the other 23:30.

What if I have a medical illness that means my thyroid doesn't work, and that most of the time my metabllism just sputters around trying to work, but really doesn't. I go for a 3-4 mile walk every day, I have two jobs, both standing only, so I walk around all day.
Still about 20lbs off from thin.

2008-07-30 12:23:32 AM
Of course, this was bound to happen once taking the stairs and gardening became "exercise."

JmBa: I actually tried that about a year ago, about 2000 extra calories a day and was able to put on a few pounds. Couldn't keep up with buying it though. It's expensive and I'm poor. I'd like to give it a try again, but I'm a good 15 lbs underweight so it'll take awhile and won't be cheap buying all that crap. And yes, I haven't found a way to not make it taste like crap yet.

You aren't necessarily underweight even if the BMI says so, it might just be your build. If you manage to gain weight by eating (as opposed to working out to build muscle mass), the result might not be what you wished for.

I was underweight according to BMI until my mid-twenties, then I suddenly gained about 20lbs over 6 months, putting me at 21 BMI...but pretty much all of the extra weight appeared around my waist. While a 34" waist isn't bad for a 6'2" guy, it looks a bit off since I'm otherwise skinny.

Oh, and I've never consciously changed my diet - the only thing different during the period I gained weight was taking SSRIs (that was about the only effect they had), and I didn't notice eating more (but I don't pay that much attention to what or how much I eat, anyhow). My weight has stayed the same since I stopped.

30 minutes 3 days a week while eating McDonald's will probably not cut your weight.

30 minutes 3 days a week while changing your eating habits and eating healthier, probably will.

If your income exceeds your outgo, then you will retain the remainder. Money, calories... same principle.

Eat fewer calories than you burn and you will lose weight, regardless of how much excercise you do. You'll be a soft-bodied wimp, but thinner.

I eliminated Sodas, Candies, Ice Cream and fast food. Most meals cooked at home. Lunch is usually just a bowl of soup. Use the lifecycle for 60 minutes, 7 days a week.

So far, I have lost 55 pounds in 4 months.

When I was in my 20s, I once lost 100 pounds in six months, but then gained it back over the following two years.

I solidly believe in the strategy of burning more calories than you ingest as the only thing that works .

Wanna lose weight without dieting or running an hour a day?

WEIGHT TRAINING

It's the easiest way to not only lose weight, but become stronger and build muscle; win, win, and win.

When friends tell me they want to lose their stomach fat I always tell them to start lifting; bench, shoulders, and back. You'd be surprised how much large chest and back muscles can hide, not to mention once you get into a routine sooner or later you'll start doing ab work. It's getting them to do leg routines that's hardest.

Also, I'm sure many different strategies work and that there are different body types and all, so whatever works for you is great. It's just that I know I would never commit to a low calorie, light beer diet, it just won't happen. So, being realistic weight lifting has proven to be the most effective method of controlling my weight, not to mention it feels good being the strongest person in the room.

I had a girlfriend who I thought had an eating disorder because she would eat tons of fast food and ice cream and then make herself puke it all back up afterwards. She insisted she was not bulimic though because she only did it every month or so when she wanted to eat something greasy and then she would eat a healthy meal after she puked. I tried to convince her to stop but she insisted that all the nasty stuff that happens to true bulimics like esophageal erosions and tooth decay only happen because they puke so much. We never settled the argument before we stopped seeing each other. Sometimes I wonder whether she was right or not.

RealAmericanHero: Thanks for the advice guys. Okay, so I'll work on cutting out the McDonalds and sugars... but I take it I still need to get *something* for breakfast, right? I used to just skip it, but from what I understand that's not such a hot idea either.

Yes of course you do but if you have time to stop at Maccas you have time to put some cereal in a bowl or to put some light muesli and yoghurt.

Well ettiquette suggests not wearing the race t-shirt on race day and that water bottle probably cost you a minute or two in the final time.

I've about had it with you and your crazy laws of physics...

Rug Doctor: 1. Just telling the subjects to restrict themselves to 1,500 calories per day and trusting them to do it is hardly scientific. If they could limit their caloric intake on their own, they wouldn't weigh 193 pounds.

2. I'm no Lance Armstrong, but it's my experience that most folks have a warped perception of what "intense exercise" means. I go to the gym fairly often (no, I don't have to be there in 26 minutes) and I'm amazed at the number of people who do four bench presses, walk on the treadmill for eight minutes, go buy an extra large smoothie and then hit the showers.

This observation is spot on

Want motivation to exercise HARD? Start biking everywhere. That "leisurely pace" shiat will get you killed damned fast. Learn to race traffic, and you'll find your legs getting hard as rocks and your body shedding the pounds.

KaponoFor3: Participants were also asked to restrict their food intake to between 1,200 and 1,500 calories per day...

Well there's the problem. 90% of obese women are going to be able to stick to a diet between 1,200 and 1,500 calories a day. It just won't happen.

I totally disagree with you. I think it won't happen either...

I've just come up with the next big breakthrough in weight loss!

Weighted silverware! Burn more calories than you can eat!

That soup spoon? 8 lbs! That dinner fork? 11.5 lbs! That butter knife? 17.37 lbs! That salad fork? Well, the salad fork is normal, because, you know, you really should be eating more salads, FATTY!

2008-07-30 10:06:35 AM
You know I never understood the whole "Put the fork down" thing. Most of the things that traditionally make people fat (Burgers, fries, donuts, Chipotle burritos) do not require a fork to begin with. Perhaps the solution, instead, is to pick the fork up?

This. Slow and steady wins the race. Throw in some weight and crossfit training and you're on the road to becoming a sexy goddess.

Best part is that the fatties couldn't even stick to an exercise plan for the duration of the test and ended up "exercising as much as they chose to."

Awesome.

To all who say a calorie's just a calorie no matter the source, simple carbohydrates are worse because in response your body is forced to raise its insulin level and increased insulin facilitates fat storage. Basic metabolism.

Research suggests that weight may largely be regulated by biology, which helps determine the body's "set point," a weight range of about 10 lbs. to 20 lbs. that the body tries hard to defend. The further you push you weight beyond your set point - either up or down the scale - some researchers say, the more your body struggles to return to it.

Genetics. Who woulda thought?

Yeah, but that has to have some limits. I don't care who you are, a 5'6" woman shouldn't weight 210 pounds.

I think that's silly and I would like to see that research. I think it's more likely that radical weight change is dangerous to your health so your body's weight will plateau at various levels and resist change. That doesn't mean just because it's difficult to start losing pounds, you should just rationalize your obesity and blame genetics. Your genes are protecting you from starvation and roller coaster dieting. Woo farking hoo.

Late as usual to the discussion.
On 4/30/2008 I had a cardiac event.
Since then I've lost 23 pounds walking and watching my diet.

The only way to lose weight is to exercise AND to take in less calories than you burn. You can exercise all you want but keep eating like a Rikishi and you will still gain weight.

2008-07-30 07:55:14 PM
YOu want the most bang for your buck? Go find a crossfit gym. Hell week will kill you.

The article doesn't say it's genetics. I would assume that you can affect where the set point is, it's just hard.
