You're still better off, naysayers.

It's tough. For months now, I've been going to the gym most days of the week, doing 5K's, playing on softball and volleyball leagues and I'm still a fatty.

I'm less of a fatty, but still a fatty none the less. It's a long, hard slog.

2008-07-29 07:32:02 PM
Well maybe 30 mins/day isn't enough if you start exercising when you are already obese. That's why it's so important to make sure kids are active.

2008-07-29 07:32:07 PM
Walk up that flight of steps, instead of taking the elevator. Feel the burn!

Then go reward yourself with a Cinnabon the size of your head.

2008-07-29 07:32:56 PM
Participants were also asked to restrict their food intake to between 1,200 and 1,500 calories per day...

Well there's the problem. 90% of obese women are going to be able to stick to a diet between 1,200 and 1,500 calories a day. It just won't happen.

2008-07-29 07:42:32 PM
I still say if you're looking for societal solutions to the OVERALL public health obesity problem, the only thing is to make the STANDARD adult lazy lifestyle better - less calories in it, and more exercise in it, WITHOUT any personal extra effort (over and above "what everyone just does") needed all the time.

If you look at which countries are fat and which aren't, you'll see the patterns, and you'll notice that most places people are NOT obsessed with working out and dieting the way they are in the US. You can view a smaller version of the differences by looking at cities in the US, such as NYC.

It means making the standard street meals have less waste calories (either less calories, or in combinations that sate longer), making walking, biking, and taking transit the "normal" commute rather than something only the oddball does.

itazurakko: making walking, biking, and taking transit the "normal" commute

Not sure if this is still the case, but I remember hearing that people in walkable cities/towns like NYC were in slightly better shape then Americans in other parts of the country because they have to walk more then the distance from their car door to the home/office door.

That said, walking/exercising isn't the complete answer -- diet is equally important. You eat bad, you're going to have problems. My FIL was a marathon runner and dropped dead of a heart attack in his early 50s because he ate horribly. My MIL who does not like to exercise at all, has outlived him by 15 years (so far) because she eats better then he did.

/exercise and overweight - I better start watching what I eat

The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat.

Period, and the end.

Also, consistantly eating less that your body's required amount of calories causes your body to hold onto the fat.

2008-07-29 07:55:42 PM
The number of calories you burn daily from your basal metabolism far outweighs the extra calories you will burn from 30 minutes of exercise. Reducing intake is much more effective.

The 30 minutes is a maintenance amount after you are in shape. You are going to need to do a whole lot more before you get to that point.

These threads always come up, and it always comes down to the same thing:

30 minutes 3 days a week while eating McDonald's will probably not cut your weight.

30 minutes 3 days a week while changing your eating habits and eating healthier, probably will.

Calories are calories, in the end. Eat less than you burn in a day, and you will lose weight. Yes, there are more guidelines than just this, but it really isn't any more complicated, either. The more you weigh, the more calories you'll burn per day, and you can slowly and gradually change your food. If you're worried about muscle loss, toss some weights in there a few times a week.

I only exercise 30 minutes a day, but I do go every single day. Two years ago, I changed my eating habits and begun doing this exercise routine, and I've lost 120 pounds and kept it off for the past year.

Until everyone stops trying to find a shortcut and realize that it takes actual effort to change your eating habits and exercise, this will go nowhere.

once, i went to McDonalds with this girl who just had a humongous ass.... No for real, it was waaaay biggger than you are even imagining. Like 3x bigger. The rest of her body was pretty good... Anyway... yeah, so she order the Supersize... Extra large fry and extra large (non-diet) soda... I was thinking "WTF is wrong with this girl?" To burn off just that soda, she'd have to like jog 40 miles,... how could she be okay with this and order it anyway?

Soda is the most useless foodstuff on the planet. It does one thing and one thing only... make you fat.

FTFA: The problem was that not enough of the women stuck with their assigned exercise categories for the researchers to gather enough meaningful data. Within a few months, most of the participants had resorted to exercising as much as they chose to. That left researchers with a slightly different data set than they had planned for.

Great. They're fat and too stupid to follow directions.

Absolutely diet is part of it.

But you look at thin countries, and you'll see that your standard, lazy-ass, no concern for health businessman, when he gets takeout, it's very very much better food than standard US fast food outlet chow.

Very often it's a hole in the wall restaurant or stall, and the food was made on site without a bunch of extra "shelf stabilizers" and other crap in it, and whether it be a big bowl or noodles OR a sandwich, it's not got the 1500 kCals you'll find in US fast food offerings.

HORDES of people don't cook their meals at home, and they CERTAINLY don't spend time purposely exercising in a gym (to many that would be considered a vain waste of time you could spend actually doing something productive, or heaven forbid, studying) and yet... they're not fatties, not on the scale of US fatties.

But that meal to go? It was picked up on the way home, WALKING from the train station to the house. Others bike, wearing suits, and not feeling the need to be particularly sporty about it, because it's COMMON for regular working adults to ride junker bikes to work or to the train. It's just an entirely different mindset.

Plus people obsess over fruit in season.

But the point being, sure, it's easy to just say "well, fattie should get off his ass and be responsible" and some might do that. But elsewhere, even the LAZY ASSES live a healthier lifestyle, and that is what makes the national numbers different.

I'm pretty sure once you reach a certain age, late 40ish, and you exercise everyday to near exhaustion, well that can't be good for your health. Overexerting your body once you're way past your glory ages can't be good for you, unless there is some contradictory evidence I am missing.

As for losing weight, as stated numerous times before: burn more than you eat.

Anyone who's actually tried to lose wieght with just 30 minutes of exercise a day could have told you this. 30 minutes of moderate exercise provides cardiovascular benefits, but you need more exercise than that and/or calorie restriction to see a significant change in body condition in the long run.

Oh don't even bring clothing sizes into this. Vanity sizing has rendered them totally meaningless and besides two women who wear the same size can have completely different bodies.

I can say that over a 10 year period, no.

But I am not sure that is a large enough sample size so my research continues.

This article is full of shiat. I have, and know many others who have done 30 minute even 4 days a week and cut calories to 1500 and you'll loss weight like a madman. What you eat in those calories also matters.

Don't let anybody tell you different. I have seen it.

Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Ted: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.
Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.
Ted: Right. Yes. OK, all right. I see where you're going.
Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
Ted: I would go for the 7.
Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.
Ted: You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
Hitchhiker: If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
Ted: That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?
[Hitchhiker convulses]
Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Ted: That - good point.
Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
