I'm having a real hard time wrapping my head around this scam. Granted, it could be the pain killers but:

Crawford is approached by man who says he's carrying $400K & needs a ride the to drug store
Crawford takes guy to bank instead, but guy doesn't trust banks
Crawford drives to a bunch of banks & ultimately withdraws $7k to show guy how it's done
Guy asks Crawford to pick up a friend who's nearby
Guys tell Crawford that they'll trust him if he lets them hold his $7K & walks around the McDonalds.
Crawford complies, guys are gone.

Is it really illegal to scam the moronic? I see it as social Darwinism.

Why is this a crime? Looks more like the guy willingly gave away $7,000 out of sheer stupidity.

2008-07-29 03:18:58 PM
If this isn't a drug deal.. it's freaking hilarious.

The sailor hat mention at the end was genius and makes this all sound so whimsical as well as harmless. If you're going to get scammed by someone, the last guy you think it will be is the fella in the sailor hat.

Yep, something fishy about the story. He's not telling us something important, methinks.

Man, I'm always shocked when this con pays off. I can't imagine anyone that stupid, but obviously they are out there.

But you'll never con an honest John. An honest John you can't drag down. Conned only get conned when they think they're the cunning one...

A fool and their money were lucky to have ever gotten together to begin with.

2008-07-29 04:50:21 PM
I call shenanigans on this guy being able to withdraw $7,000 by going to various ATMs. Maybe if he had gone into ONE bank and used the teller I'd believe him.

Murfreesboro? David Price is from there.

It was a drug deal scam and he's so mad at them he'll do anything including calling the cops in on it.

2008-07-29 04:53:29 PM
He did NOT get scammed. He gave that money away.

The Nigerians really have finally figured out just how stupid Americans really are.. some are so stupid they can't even use the internet.. so why not hop on a plane?

If he had $400K on him, I would have told the guy to call a farkin' cab.

Who is this Mr. Moran fellow.. and is he related to the subby?

A fool and his money, and so on.

But I agree with jaylectricity. I don't know about other banks, but my bank won't let me withdraw anywhere near $7k from an ATM (even if I go to several) in one day.

2008-07-29 04:56:12 PM
lol wtf?

2008-07-29 04:56:29 PM
Hullo, I am Nigerian Prince, and I do not trust bank. If you show me how to do it I will share my $400000.

2008-07-29 04:56:55 PM
What? Why did he have to take out 7 THOUSAND DOLLARS to show how an ATM works? Would taking out a $20 bill not have done the same? Something is wrong here.

2008-07-29 04:57:05 PM
WaWaWeWa: lol wtf?

Um, yeah. That's what I came in here to say.

Well he was 55... maybe he had early-onset senility that caused him to trust random people without reason... like when old people get scammed because they really think that some prince in Zimbabwe wants to help war orphans and needs aid in laundering money to do it.

I bet he felt all superior showing the "ignorant foreigner" the glories of the U.S of A. banking system. If some random dude told me he was carrying $400k on him, I'd assume he was a drug dealer or painfully stupid and go the other way. Either he's going to fark someone up, or he's going to get farked, and I honestly wouldn't want to be near that.

rufus-t-firefly: Am I wrong for thinking this shouldn't be illegal?

Yes. There are two types of people who get scammed...
The first, I have no pity for - they're crooks themselves, knowing that they're getting involved with something shady, but figuring either that the payoff is worth it or that they'll scam the scammers. In this category includes the TFer whose sister received a money order in the mail for a couple thousand that she knew nothing about, and wanted justification for cashing it.
The second group, however, are usually naive, elderly, and lonely people. Their families want nothing to do with them, so they latch onto any stranger that acts kind and interested in their stories. When they lose money, they'll keep chasing it with more money, both for the attention and because they don't want to admit to their kids (who already think they're idiots) that they were scammed out of thousands of dollars. They usually end up losing the majority of their retirement money. Scamming them should be illegal.

Was one of the scammers named Tyrone?
