My girlfriend bought a Dane Cook CD/DVD a few years ago. It had some tracks on it that made me chuckle. Then after listening to the CD in the car, we went and put in the DVD at home. Actually seeing his performance is what killed it for me. Throwing water on yourself and rolling around on stage screaming about something is just not my kind of comedy. I have stopped on his specials on Comedy Central from time to time just to see if he has anything new. However, it seems that he relies too much the stupid physical "comedy" that he does along with long drawn out stories that don't have a punchline. I don't like it but it does not mean that everybody else has to not like it as well though. Dude has made more money than I will ever see and has legions of fans. Good for him.

/Would defiantly laugh if he got hit by a car though...

What an insult to Carlin's legacy that would be.

Noah's Arcade: dtirkel: Nerds HATE Dane Cook...ooh. Didn't you guys ever hear that track "Just Wanna Dance"? Brilliant stuff on the contrast between women's habits and desires in a dance environment versus the desires of a man in the same environment.

/Do you guys hate him because he reminds you of the guys who used to stuff you into lockers back in HS?

Actually, we hate him solely because you like him, and we love trash-talking celebs and other "successful" people that you like because we so thoroughly enjoy your comments in EVERY SINGLE THREAD where you call everyone else nerds, losers, failures, etc. I'm surprised you didn't pull the "basement-dwelling, virgin WoW-playing, still-living-with-mom" card that you pull in EVERY SINGLE THREAD.

/relax, and go make some friends, douchebag
//you're way too uptight

You know, I never understood how guys like dtirkel could function with all the irony and cognitive dissonance in their posts. Imagine if he was posting his comments on here, and someone in real walked by and noticed him. I imagine the conversation would go something like this:

dtirkel: HAHAHA LOL stupid nerds!
person: Um, excuse me, but what are you so excited about?
dtirkel: Well, I'm just celebrating over the fact that I trolled some loser farkers on the internet. they're probably crying in their mom's basements right now.
person: What's a "farker?"
dtirkel: Oh, it's a person who posts on the internet site "fark.com"
person: And what are you doing to them right now?
dtirkel: What does it look like? I'm posting on the fark forums baiting them with my trolls and watching them have a hissy fit over it.
person: Wait, so you said that farkers are losers who post on the site fark, but you're posting on fark too, right now. So, doesn't that make you one of them?
dtirkel: *head explodes*

/also, to contribute to the topic, Dane Cook is funny in small doses and is fun to quote at parties sometimes, but he couldn't hold a candle next to George Carlin. Carlin shiats more talent than he could ever have.

For anyone wondering, yes John Stewart does still do stand up occasionally. He's pretty busy with TDS, but he did a set at the University of Delaware last year (maybe two years ago, I forget). For the record, it was very funny.

To me, Dane Cook is like a cover band. Fairly entertaining, and if you know a lot of comedy, you'll be able to recognize jokes from elsewhere and turn to your friends and say the original comedian did it better.

And lastly, some love for Louis C.K., Jim Gaffigan, and Mike Birbiglia. If you haven't heard any of them, check them out immediately.

Dane Cook is funny the first time you hear him. Then he gets annoying and you realize that its all bullshiat. Lewis Black on the other hand is funny no matter how many times you listen and is a living comedic God in my opinion.

2008-07-29 10:19:42 AM
Dane Cook's idea of funny is taking off his pants and falling down.

ntrino: How about is someone smoking the crack?

Dane Cook is like poison ivy of the comedy world. After you have endured him, you just want to scratch your eyes and ears out, or his. He is the annoying as an rabid eel in your pants fraternity guy. the little punk ass who talks during a movie. the scabs that fall off your genitalia after a week in Thailand. you get the picture.

and where is our favorite Dane Cook supporter. Sarcastica? i am sure she has some love to Rain down upon mr. cooks countenance.

In all seriousness, the man is not funny. I admit that when I became aware of him, just his entire look and vibe turned me off completely. Still, I suffered through his stand-up routine because I didn't want my bias to cloud my judgment.

You know what? I thought it sucked. He really does nothing but scream and throw himself on the floor and tell mediocre jokes that he then laughs at. It baffles me that his following eats it up with a spoon. It baffles me more that he gets to perform with the likes of Dave Attel (sp?), who I think is quite funny.

I just don't get it.

I'm starting to notice a trend here. A lot of the anti Cook people in this thread are acting like complete children. Not trying to insult anyone, just saying maybe if you didn't act so childish and stopped throwing insults at people we'd get your point better.

Andy Kindler, who has gone so far as to ridicule the purported unsophistication of Cook's material on the Late Show with David Letterman, points out that much of Cook's writing employs speculative premises, portrayed as axiomatic, resulting in observations that possess only the pretense of insight

Here here! Eddie Izzard rocks hard as well!

Meant to say earlier I saw Jon Stewart last year. It was good stuff, though some seemed a bit like retread material. I enjoyed the show overall quite a bit.

Mitch Hedberg did kind of a Steven Wright thing. Dan Cook is does more of a retarded frat boy thing.

2008-07-29 10:36:23 AM
I saw Dane for the first time back at Comics Come Home in (97, 98?). Anyway, yeah compared to Denis Leary and the other grumpy Boston comics, he was like a breath of fresh air. However, I knew he was a hack when we went to the same show the following year, and EVERY other comic had new material (Hey even Steve Sweeney had a different story about how rude Bostonians are) except for Dane who trotted out, almost word for word, the same act. Since then he was able to steal a few new jokes for his repertoire, but honestly, he's a one trick pony and that trick has gotten mighty old.

2008-07-29 10:37:08 AM
Dane Cook was funny until you realized that he stole everything from Daniel Tosh.

Chris Rock was funny until you realized that it wasn't 1998 anymore.

Jon Stewart doesn't do stand up anymore.

Patton Oswalt is the flagship comedian of the modern era.

Also, Bill Hicks wasn't some comedic genius. He was an unfunny activist with a microphone and nobody knew what to do with him so they called him a stand up comedian.

Mitch Hedberg, like him or not, was at least keeping it real. He kept it so farking real he died of a heroin overdose. Dane Cook is the manifestation of the absolute mediocrity that has been destroying any sort of legitimate art in the entertainment industry for the past decade or more.

This just in, humor is STILL subjective. I realize that your extensive background in C++ makes you the authority on such matters, and that in your world, once something becomes accepted by the general masses, it stops being acceptable, funny, or interesting to the general population. You're posting anti-celebrity venom on a website. This is accomplishing what, exactly? Does it ease the pain of accomplishing nothing in your own life?

/For the record, I am not saying that Dane Cook is a great comic. He is by no means a talentless hack, however. He definitely has some decent routines. Of course, all his fans must be idiots and you're the smart ones.

2008-07-29 10:41:28 AM
It's a generational thing I suppose. Can't figure out why anyone would ever want to see a comic at MSG or any arena. At that point, the event itself become the event. Kids are followers. Having a million MySpace friends attracts another million, just because morans can say, "Hey look, Dane Cook is my friend and a friend of all my friends, so I must be cool."

Sadly, with all the narrowcasted media choices and diversions out there, there are fewer things that tie younger generations to a common reference. Their parents had near-universally shared references because there were only three national TV networks and Carlin and Cosby were about the only ones with albums because media was much more selective about what they'd release and support.

Somehow Dane Cook figured this out and became the (mildly) comedic voice to become that common reference for this generation. And he cashed in. If he resembles anybody, it's more like Garrison Keillor, who has about the same appeal and level of popularity among shut-ins.

It doesn't. He was doing his own surrealist thing and some people like it, others don't. I'm a fan of that kind of stuff, not such a fan of Cook though (he's a damn dirty prop comic as far as I'm concerned. Maybe he can be the next Carrot Top)

Dane Cook steals from Demitri Martin

Fans of those two comedians are the ones threatening to kill standup before it has a chance to really live again. Neither of them are particularly funny or original, but their fans are encouraging their kind of shiat. I'm particularly against Demitri Martin because not only his he another unfunny Tosh-stealing hack, but his kind of standup is infecting other comedians because hipster douchebags think he's cool. Eugene Mirman was hysterical, and then he started doing the same pie chart easel bullshiat that Martin does and now he's pretty unfunny.

Unrelated, but mentioning hipster douchebags reminded me that Michael Ian Black is also a painfully bad standup comedian.
