Dane Cook, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart

One of these is not like the others.

Dane Cook does not deserve to sit on Carlin's throne.

Dane Cook does not deserve to empty Carlin's chamber pot one last time. He'd find a joke to steal, one that Carlin discarded for the obvious reason (it was shiat).

Dane Cook should be heir to Elvis's throne. And by that I mean I his heart exploding while straining to have a bowel movement during a pill binge.

DamnYankees: What, no Satire tag?

For a Dane Cook thread? Even 'satire' is too closely related to humor for that.

2008-07-28 10:23:39 PM
Bull. Farking. Shiat. Dane Cook isn't qualified to carry Carlin's jock.

2008-07-28 10:23:55 PM
If Dane Cook is Carlin's heir, then Richard Simmons is the next Hugh Hefner.

Well, this thread concluded early.

Even when Carlin wasn't laugh outloud funny, he was brilliant. His social commentary and rants are the stuff of legend. Even Carlin haters have a certain level of respect for him. Cook? just watch this thread.

Must be Stewart, cause he 5'7 Rock & Cook are normal sized.

better heir would be Jon Stewart, or Lewis Black.

No, it's Rock, because he's black. DUH!

Jimmy Pardo is the funniest comedian currently working as an actual standup, IMO.

2008-07-28 10:38:31 PM
I agree with SilenStrider- Louis Black is about as close as they come....and he still has a ways to go.

2008-07-28 10:39:17 PM
Lewis Black, imo, is the only thing close to Carlin.

Dane Cook, an heir to Carlin's throne?

No. There's no joke here. The answer to the question is "no." That's it. No.

FTFA: Yet the performer he cites first as an example of the excellent health of standup comedy in a post-Carlin world is Dane Cook, a popular but polarizing presence on the standup scene.

No.

alienated: Lewis Black, imo, is the only thing close to Carlin.

actually, if you check out Black's book "Nothing Sacred", there's a blurb on the back there from Carlin, about how Black was the only one in recent memory that could really make Carlin laugh.

Submitter is damn lucky he used the UNLIKELY tag. That's all I'm saying.

2008-07-28 11:02:41 PM
Oh hell no. Oh, FARK no. Cook is about as funny as a luke-warm dog turd.

SilentStrider: better heir would be Jon Stewart, or Lewis Black.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but they are close. I can't think of anyone better though. Maybe Carlin shouldn't have an heir, he was too awesome.

Does Jon Stewart even do stand up anymore? It's been a while since Chris Rock's last stand up special, too.

Bill Maher is pretty funny some and does some good political humor, but he's also kind of smarmy.

I agree with the people who mentioned Lewis Black.

Dave Chappelle was doing good stuff until he flipped out and quit his show. Worst of all, he left us with Carlos Mencia.

I can't really think of anybody else who's doing good political comedy right now.

David Cross, maybe?

"Kill the Messenger" airs September 27th. I'm assuming it's from his "No Apologies" tour of this year.

\Caught him in DC a few months back.
\\It was decent but not particularly inspired.

I was watching a show about the history of stand-up comedy a few weeks ago. They were going to have Dane Cook on, but they managed to book all the comedians he stole from first.

CowboyNinjaD: Does Jon Stewart even do stand up anymore?

I believe he exclusively does TDS, but I could be wrong. I'd think that if he did any real stand-up, it would be televised and the network that picked it up, either HBO or Comedy Central, would trump it like no tomorrow.

This headline made me puke in my mouth a little.

I like Cross. He's definitely a "that guy from _____," but I don't think he has a big mainstream following.

Cool, I'll have to check that out.

That's my point. He does great satire on TDS, but he usually plays the straight man.

People like Chris Rock and Lewis Black follow much more in the tradition of comedic soap-boxing that Carlin was famous for.

SilentStrider

Noted with thanks. I'll check it out Tuesday for that reason alone.

Dane Cook makes me laugh about as hard as a drywall screw driven through my left testicle with a pair of pliers would.

In 20 years people will still compare comedians to Carlin, and you'll have to google Cook to remember who he was.

Hell no.

Who actually likes Dane Cook? I want to know, because he is painfully employed.

2008-07-29 12:15:52 AM
I, for one, have heard some of Danes' stuff that has made me larf.
Ditto for Carlos Mencia. I still stand by my original comment on who, if anyone, is worthy of being compared to George.
So don't all crack on Dane- he has his moments .

Just sayin is all...

2008-07-29 12:16:33 AM
NO

2008-07-29 12:21:24 AM
Just mentioning Dane Cook and George Carlin in the same sentence should be considered a crime against humanity. Except my sentence of course.

2008-07-29 12:53:14 AM
Dane Cook says funny things at times, but he doesn't even belong in the shadow of George Carlin. I hope Dane Cook sticks to stupid chick flick comedies, rather than pollute the stand-up stage.

Woot!!

I love Dane Cook.. even more because so many Farkers hate him and he's insanely rich and wildly popular.

He has his huge following, and he brings in the fans big time.

Aren't you a Fark TV apologist as well?

IMHO, it seems like the guy wrote enough material for a 45-minute show... and has been living off that material from the beginning of his career, all the way to now..

I'm not even sure he wrote the first two comedy performances he performed on comedy central...I have a hard time believing someone capable of writing that material could degenerate to the point where they would write the HBO special "Vicious Circle".

/His initial material boosted him far too high on the comedian scale.... and he is going to be falling back down, hitting every limb on the way down if this is the type of crap he is going to be putting out for the rest of his career.

Oh god damn, we can't compare Dane Cook to Fark tv... He is certainly bad.. but come on..
