Does anyone even make bootlegs for sale anymore? I haven't seen bootleg DVDs for sale ever. They're always free. :)

I know quite a few people who do. Most of the country isn't as internet savvy as the rest of us.

WB made more money in that 38hours than all the farkers combined make in a year.

Jerry: Do you even know what this scene is about?

Kramer: It's about a guy buying a loaf of bread.

Jerry: No, bread is his soul. He's trying to buy back a loaf of his soul.

I was in NYC last year and was on the subway heading to visit some friends in Brooklyn. I was offered candy, DVDs and music for sale. It was like Skymall without the glamour.

But could you buy the Hot Diggity Dogger Hot dog cooker?

/One day I will buy one.

Um....I saw this movie up on bittorrent inside of 27 hours after release.....

I didn't download it tho, so I don't know if it was a good copy or not.

But if people pirate this movie how will it make any money? cough*300million*cough

On the counter of the 7-11 I was in 20 minutes ago. (bad neighborhood I guess) Had a chance to watch TDK a week before it was released, and declined. Already had tickets.

Anybody that would rather watch a crappy cam video rather than spend $10 for the theater experience wouldn't have gone to the theaters anyways.

2008-07-28 05:30:32 PM
I still think that the whole SpiderMan bootleg story that turned out to be "Earth VS the Spider" was hilarious for all that bought it.

Then again, I have that movie and liked it.

This. $10 for the Dark Knight is the best $10 I have spent in a long time.

"One of the reasons why it's so important to try to protect the first weekend is that it prevents the pirate supply chain from starting. A day or two becomes really, really significant. You've delayed disc manufacturing that then delays distribution, which then delays those discs from ending up on street corners for sale."

Except for the part where it shows up on Bittorrent as soon as it's finished being ripped.

I was just on Canal Street in NYC and they were selling Dark knight (and WallE) for 5 bucks (mainly by Chinese elderly women). I meant to buy one, just to see if it was real, or if was a camcorder, but I forgot to get one.

Does anyone know what those look like ? Are they camcoder movies ?

I don't know about Wall-E, but everything so far with the Dark Knight is simply a screener. Anything you'll find on a street corner is going to be ass if the PB and the Demon haven't even got something better yet.

Yeah, If you go to a certain Awesome hole in the wall BBQ joint in Berkeley you can buy bootlegs. It's behind a hospital.

2008-07-28 05:51:03 PM
I saw it at one of the streaming sites the day that it came out. I didn't see it because there are some movies that you just need to see on a big screen. For the rest, there is bit torrent.

I am hoping to see it this weekend

2008-07-28 05:51:12 PM
The real issue is when the first good copy comes online. Someone (Wired, I think) did a comparison between a lot of different movies, trying to see if the timing of the Oscar screener copies influenced how fast dvd-quality copies make it to the internet. I forget the conclusion, but I don't think the Oscar review copies are to blame for the leaks.

/perfectly fine waiting, as long as I don't forget

2008-07-28 05:54:03 PM
Saw it. Mediocre video, very good audio. Now I'm looking forward to paying $10 to see it on the big screen this week when the crowds have (hopefully) cooled off a bit.

2008-07-28 05:55:04 PM
Ever notice, according to the MPAA/RIAA. If something does well it's because of their anti-piracy efforts. If it does bad it's because of piracy.

Whether or not its good is apparently irrelevant.

I would like to find a pirated copy of The Happening - funniest movie I've seen in years even if it was unintentionally funny.

Not that I condone it, or do it...

*ahem*

...but if I was to do it, it would only help me increase the 300+ movies I already own. If it's a good movie, I want the movie in my collection. If the movie is ass, I don't want to have to pay to find out that it is ass. Unless it is so incredibly assy that it's a must own.

/hypothetically of course

i'm getting a kick out of these replies, because i downloaded a pirated copy. if it was playing in a theatre within 1000 km, i would have gone...but alas.

meh. 36 hours is long enough to piss off the nerds that have to see it before its released, who end up paying to see it anyway.

though I do remember a kid in college that downloaded LOTR: Two Towers and was bragging about it to us via text, while we were watching it with our dates in a theater as he sat in his bedroom alone watching on his 15 inch monitor

Exactly. Too many people get overly excited about obtaining a low-quality bootleg to watch at home. I don't care how good your set-up is; the theater has a bigger screen than you do. I just wish ushers were allowed to taze people who talk. Or who bring their kids to R-rated movies.

2008-07-28 06:43:27 PM
Listen, I know it's considered acceptable to download torrents or buy bootlegs around here, but you are taking money directly out of my pension. That's not going to stop anyone, I know, but there is a real effect to doing this.

Well, the reencoded cam up at a site I go to all the time is pretty spiffy.

/I'll watch it in theaters when the crowds die down.

2008-07-28 06:59:55 PM
Saw it in the theatre, then went to my girl's cousin's house immediately after and they had just finished downloading it. Excellent copy, except for the part with the subtitles. Those were in Spanish.

Wall-e looks good but why buy it when you can watch it online for free (email me for the site)

I would say lets sedate any asshole teenager who goes to the movies as a purely social experience, but then the teens would start going for the sedative.

Better to sterilize the ones who act up, then.

/long term solution

2008-07-28 07:09:06 PM
If I were the movie studios, I'd get together a conference of nerds and security specialists and have them come up with a system for securing movies. I think what the idiots who involve themselves in piracy don't realize is that eventually, the studios will figure out that its easier to control less screens and secure them and it will mean less wide releases. People buying and downloading bootlegs will eventually cut off their noses to spite their faces.

Theft is theft.

Anyone who pirates Batman is a terrorist.

2008-07-28 07:57:00 PM
More like 24 hours...

I paid to see it in the theater after I saw it. Worth it.

2008-07-28 08:12:52 PM
I dunno, I saw it in the theaters on opening day, I'm watching an adequate copy right now, and I'm checking it out in IMAX next weekend.

On the whole I think WB profited from me..

2008-07-28 09:11:21 PM
Waaah! Our movie's making only 300 million instead of 13 billion!

Ppft. The movie's good enough to cover the costs.

2008-07-28 10:10:31 PM
Warner Brothers, WHY so SERIOUS?

2008-07-28 10:18:09 PM
Bootlegs are hardly equivalent to theater quality films. The only time it comes even close is if a high quality dvd screener gets leaked online. I also have my doubts on money lost claims made by movie studios. Most people who watch online bootlegs wouldn't watch it if the only option was going to the theater, they would just skip it for some other form of free entertainment.

2008-07-28 10:53:56 PM
as for the teenage social experience; I stood up in the middle of the film and looked at these kids and said "I PAID TEN BUCKS TO SEE THIS AND IF YOU DON'T SHUT THE FARK UP I AM GRAB YOU OUT OF YOUR SEATS AND THROW YOU OVER THE BALCONY!" the rest of the theater cheered.

2008-07-28 11:03:33 PM
I heard there's a really decent, filtered telesync available.

I really wish I coulda seen this in IMAX but the $6.50 matinee last Tuesday was good enough. Theater was only about 20% full. :)

2008-07-28 11:06:29 PM
First, I'd like to call B.S. on this whole article. The came as out within 24 hours and the telesync was out within a few more days. There is a site which peddles information on Video CD Quality that pirates put out. I'd love to post the URL but it's a little too close to piracy posting and I don't want to get in trouble. I don't download the movies but always interesting to know how quickly they come out and how good they are.

Second, The Happening r5

2008-07-28 11:20:24 PM
Try 4 hrs.

2008-07-28 11:28:53 PM
It's been said a million times about the quality issue. But 3-4 months from now the DVD releases will appear, and that's when my friends will grab it and burn to DVD. I understand doing that. I got a Blu-Ray player though, and rather see it in HD, so I just rent em from Netflix or buy 'em.

/went to 3 theatres before I found a showing that wasn't sold out
//best movie of the year, by far, and maybe best movie of the past 2-3 years
