Just because the Judge has a knife that takes two hands to open, does not mean that the boy was carrying the same model. All of this hysteria over knife crime in Britain is hilarious.

If the judge pulls a knife you pull a gun.
That's the British Way!

Knife?

Outlawing that is going to be as effective as outlawing "blunt instruments" DROP THE TOASTER!

I know it sounds crazy, but if you open up the killing tools to the law abiding the killing will decrease.

Mine, everytime I see her she beats me :(

Anyway, this is such a fuss over nothing, the kid said he needed one hand to open, the Judge showed you needed two, how is this a problem? I hate this stupid faux hysteria people get themselves worked up into because it makes them feel special or like they're doing something important.

All that is needed to sort this crap out is for it to be made legal to give kids discipline, if a shop attendant tackles thieving kids he gets done for assault, that has got to stop, once people start hitting kids back maybe they'll learn not to provoke people. Or we'll have a bloodbath, either way it should be interesting.

I can't imagine a pocket knife that actually takes two hands to open.

If you can't open it by holding the handle and flicking the blade out then reverse your hold. Hang onto the blade and flick the handle out.

You'll find a very small percentage that can't be opened one way or the other.

2008-07-25 09:12:39 PM
...you call that a knife?

Yeah, I didn't read the article, but I really don't like when places go overboard in banning "weapons." Like how a school wont allow even a small pocket knife, like a swiss army knife be cause it can be used as a weapon. Well I could sharpen my pencil and probably do more damage than I could with a swiss army knife. I also could use my history book to bust someone over the head, so let's ban that too. If I picked up an overhead projector, I could do some serious damage swinging it at people's faces. Anything can be used as a weapon if you want to hurt someone bad enough.

FTFA: Under English and Welsh law it is an offence to carry in public a blade longer than 3in without good reason.

And here people think that banning guns would solve the violence problem.

Look, England tried, and guess what, knife crime has gone up.

I'm sorry, but the mental image of "furious anti-knife crime activists" cracked me up so much that I forgot all the other witty ripostes I had concocted.

Boy Scouts are supposed to have a knife you can open one handed. Doesn't really stop anyone, but all the official knives are two handed. Same with a lot of carving knives.

FTA: Furious antiknife crime campaigners...

This, more than anything I have ever heard from a gun owner, made me realize that some people really will never stop. That what I view as sane gun control laws really can snowball to unbelievable places.

Anyone go look at the on-line e-petition?
Looking to make anyone who carries a knife a criminal.
Yeah, that'll work well.
Also, what the heck is the legal definition of a "good reason" for carrying a knife with a blade longer then 3"?
Not saying there isn't a bunch of good reasons, I'm just sayin.......

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm: Just because the Judge has a knife that takes two hands to open, does not mean that the boy was carrying the same model. All of this hysteria over knife crime in Britain is hilarious.

This, this and THIS again.

I have several folding knives that I can open with one hand.

mikaloyd: Also any pregneant woman in favor of abortion.

While recognizing the inflammatory potential of a such a comment and also understanding the shock of unexpected, unwanted pregnancy, I ultimately and sadly agree with your statement.

The picture of the smug looking judge says is hilarious. Anyway, I read the short article - who gives a crap? The 16-year-old said that he used only one hand to open his knife, the judge disagreed, pulled out his own (which was smaller than 3" long, which is apparently all right to have,) and showed him that you need two hands.

I have more of a problem with the judge's action being illogical. Just because his particular knife required two hands, does not mean the defendant's did. But I don't why all the "concerned" idiots want the judge fired...

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm: Just because the Judge has a knife that takes two hands to open, does not mean that the boy was carrying the same model. All of this hysteria over knife crime in Britain is hilarious.

So, I'm curious:
- Apparently, what the judge did was legal.
- There's no "outcry" except, apparently, what the article itself is generating.
- The article has a link to a petition, by the paper, to get the judge fired.

I'd say "tempest in a teacup," except the last time the Brits had one of those, they went from an empire to a friggin' island.

What's the big deal? Knives are illegal to carry in Britain?
I carry one of these daily. Kind of expensive, but razor sharp!

Not to threadjack or anything, but I remember you from a particularly teary animal thread from a few months ago. I mentioned how much I would miss my sweet Lacey girl, who was nearly 21 this summer. Well, she finally passed away, in my very arms, last month. I miss her so much. But we have another cat who has helped us get through it. I just remembered you from checking out your profile.

Furious antiknife crime campaigners called last night for the judge to be sacked.

Lyn Costello, the co-founder of the Mothers Against Murder and Aggression campaign group, said: "He should lose his job. One teenager a week is being murdered on the streets of Britain and here he is brandishing a knife.

Man the fark up. If somebody want you dead they'll find a way. fark, I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork.

He's a judge, I'm sure there's a lot of people who don't like him. It's getting to the point in the UK that everybody will have to be lobotomized so they won't hurt each other, but they still will because the waterheads will be fighting over each others pudding.

2008-07-25 10:18:42 PM
About the only kind of pocketknife I can think of that requires two hands to open is the Swiss-army style knife. Most single-blade pocket folders are pretty easy to get open with one hand.

jbuist: I can't imagine a pocket knife that actually takes two hands to open.

My Leatherman. You had to open it up to pliers mode, then pick out the blade.

Oh, and you had to open it up all the way like that. You couldn't just pick it out, and then nudge it the rest of the way open with a knuckle on your tool-holding hand. At least, not without lots of blood.

Ever other unfolding knife I have can be opened that way. The Leatherman has a combination of tight pivot and unbelievable sharpness.

No, the British way is to take the stabbing like a good law abiding citizen, while hoping against hope that the Metropolitan police gets there in time to save you.

That's it, if a judge thinks it's cool to BRANDISH a knife, I'm going to go immediately stab everyone I see.

It still baffles me how someone pulling out a knife could possibly shock anyone. I see people with knives multiple times per day, using them as tools, using them to cut open packaging, etc. It is normal to carry a knife.

2008-07-25 10:54:40 PM
And to think, this is the country that the sun never set on. Sad

3 inches? I think that if they adopt the metric system, all their knife problems will disappear.
