Yes. Yes they did suck. Dr. Doom was awful and they didn't even show the real Galactus.
Super weak.

Well, honestly, I liked Dr. Doom alot more than well, anybody else in either of the movies. He is the one actor from the movies that I hope gets a second life in something like The Avengers or such.

I would've been okay with Cloud Galactus and Dr.Nip/Tuck if the movies had actually been entertaining. But they weren't - they doubly failed, in that they simultaneously butchered the source material and were utterly lousy films.

Either way, I want a good Silver Surfer movie.

Honestly... reading the comics... I would say Doom was pretty on the mark.

Campy is campy. The F4 always were.

I'd go see a third. I hope they get on it.

Except for Alba and Mr. Fantastic, the cast was fine. It was the horrible script and directing that were terrible. That underwear-model looking dude who played Johnny has been alright (never great) in other films like Sunshine.

VaportrailFilms: Campy is campy. The F4 always were.

I'd have rather they went intentionally, obviously campy out into Ed Wood (or Starship Troopers) territory instead of just making a damned weak film.

F4 would be an awesome candidate for a bizarre "from the villain's perspective" IE Dr. Horrible or Austin Powers sort of thing, or a quirky comedy like Mystery Men. If you wanted to do anything other than a straight-up action flick, you could easily twist the camp into something really clever. But they didn't - they tried to play it straight and made a just plain weak film.

The second was even worse, because it took itself even more seriously - most of the first film had no villain, it was mostly about the F4 dealing with their new-found bizarre celebrity/deformity, and came out only mediocre. A better cast and directing could have made that script neat. The second film took the movie into a straight action film, and just blew it completely because the F4 is really kind of silly, and is even moreso with their weak-assed actors and their half-assed Surfer storyline.

McMahon LOOKED like Doom, but they went the wrong way with the character. I can see him doing much better if they decided to make him the Doom we all know (but then we wouldn't see his face much).

Evans and Chiklis were the only good things about either film.

fruitloop: give it time...hollywood will give us a third one...

adam carolla had a great bit yesterday about the hollywood process.

"If you walked into a major studio, and said, 'I have Shia LeBeouf, Will Smith, and Jessica Alba in my pocket, committed to shoot a movie with me", and the studio guy says 'where's the script?', I could grab a kleenex, blow my nose with it, throw it on his desk and say 'there's the script.' He'd say, 'Smith AND Alba? OK, here's 25 million dollars. Have fun. Let's try for a Fall release."

But, if you gave them the script of 'Dr. Zhivago', with no cast, he'll say '*sigh* I don't know. I'm just not...really....seeing anything here.'"

And if Dr. Zhivago came out at he same time that Hancock did, it would get destroyed in the box office.

Yeah, I think the Dark Knight is so non-arguably good that it's kind of hard to troll it. Fantastic Four is some fantastically awful crap, I can't believe they even attempted a second one.

The only thing that would make FF3 a good movie would be the Invisible Girl turning her outfit invisible.

I was never a big FF fan, but I found both movies servicable; rather than a dedicated FF3, I'd more like to see one or more of them in supporting roles in a larger Marvel Universe flick. Spiderman and Torch have had a long history together, it'd be interesting to see them team up.

Also, Evans really did save that first movie. NONE of that character was on the page, he really got fired up for it. (pun intended).

Well, it's a little different when the Ang Lee hulk film was only a few years ago. Even the Schumacher batman suckfest films don't really count because they rarely actually directly in contradicted the Burton ones in content, only in tone.

You are close. But really, the only way it would work is if that rubber guy, The Thing, Human Torch suddenly died, then Invisible Girl gained new powers that allowed her to clone herself 3 times, making 4 Invisible girls, and for the entire movie they just did jello shots and made out with each other

A whole lot of this. Get those two to do a Human Torch/Thing buddy flick and I'd go see it in a hot second.

Another FF movie? Not so much.

Disagree with the assessment of the F4 movies - the first was serviceable - it was quirky and cute, although the two leads (Alba and the Mr. Fantastic dude) were just agonizingly bad... it just really fell apart when the final act happened and it had to take itself seriously as an action movie.

The second one was just a freaking train-wreck, since it tried to take itself seriously from the start - and for some reason, that team of writers and directors can't make a serious superhero movie out of the F4.

Still, the second did have one inspired idea - Marvel has a lot of second-string stuff like the F4 and silver-surfer... they could probably put together a decent "cataclysm" movie out of them. The licensing for the A-names like Spider-man and the X-men is a nightmare, but nobody really is fighting to do anything with, say, Adam Warlock. A massive "Infinity Gauntlet" or "Civil War" flick or something would be fun, except that the massive cast would be hard to keep up with.

Either way, it looks like they're gearing up for an ultra-crossover with the Avengers movie they're slowly building up to (I'm still bewildered how the hell they're going to make Thor work).

2008-07-25 04:33:46 PM
I still don't see how they could mess up Doom so badly. Had they never heard of Darth Vader, the ripoff of Doom? A wimpy metrosexual Doom wtf. The guy should have been intimidating from the first frame. Not to mention making him some generic corporate asshole instead of the despot from the comics.

2008-07-25 04:34:12 PM
When the first came out, I knew it wouldn't be a big superhero epic. I actually thought the second would be awesome, only to be wrong.

Third time's the charm, or just another humiliating stunt.

Isn't the problem if they turn things around and make a decent Fantastic Four 3 that will mean they have to make Fantastic Four 4 which will be a confusing movie title.

xria: Isn't the problem if they turn things around and make a decent Fantastic Four 3 that will mean they have to make Fantastic Four 4 which will be a confusing movie title.

Or incorrectly use "F4" instead of "FF" so the fourth movie would be F44, which would just drive people nuts.

I figured the first one would suck so I avoided it. Watched it a little over a year ago when it came on TV. I was right - it was terrible. What shames me is that a few weeks later I downloaded the 2nd one. Not because I thought it'd be worth seeing, but I was bored and in the mood for something really shallow with explosions and such. Even by that criteria, with allowances for expecting it to be bad, I was disappointed. I'd be shocked and filled with bitter hatred for geeks everywhere if the studio had opted for a third.

90 minute commercials aren't great movies, ever. When has that ever stopped them from making tons of money?

Can it be that the general public is catching on?

I find this hard to believe as surely we will flock to anything advertised on our fast food drink buckets.

2008-07-25 04:53:24 PM
I made it through both, but they could have been so much better. The whole cast should be spanked. I'll start with Alba...

2008-07-25 04:55:54 PM
Doom was the biggest problem with both of these movies.
The guy's supposed to be arrogant and evil. This one was just kind of a douche.

2008-07-25 05:07:42 PM
I didn't watch the first movie completely, but I managed to catch the scene where Alba gets invisible and starts to strip down to her underwear for no reason other than to reappear suddenly and show off her assets.

I never met a comic book fan who enjoyed F4.

They're the red-headed stepchildren of superheroes, and no one wishes them anything but ill intentions. Myself included.

I've yet to see a film that had Kirby-esque visuals, and the FF would definitely need that. Weird space visuals. But that would mean color, and Hollywood doesn't do color anymore, it's all shades of gray and wobbly. If ILM would've invented KirbyDots.exe for the movies, maybe...
(Nevermind that the FF seem to me like the last outpost of scientific optimism combined with undefined occultism, just like the Pulp Heroes of the 30s)

Yes, Doom sucked. While it's hard to do the 'ruler of Latveria' bit nowadays, they completely missed the cool armor and the occult elements, which always where a nice counterpoint to the scientific background -- and something where Victor trumped Doom.

And well, Alba simply can't act. FF2 was painful too look at, even while trying to concentrate on the high points of her performance, IYKWIM.

Fantastic one, sucked . Fantastic two, slightly better.

But wil the people who cheer them on in the movie realize that other than the Silver Surfer, It's the Fantastic four doing all the damage to begin with.

Yay, the Thing pulled up the firetruck. But the Thing also caused the firetruck to crash. Yayyyyy.

About ten minuets into "silver surfer", I said to my wife "This movie was written for twelve year olds!" After about an hour of view without comment my wife turned to me and said "It was BY twelve year olds!" I think that pretty much sums up my take on the first two F4 movies.

I'd like to see McMahon in a Dr. Strange flick. Maybe it's typecasting, but I think he can do arrogant-doctor-brought-low. Except instead of bouncing back and being a douche again because the TV series demands it, he could mature into the Sorcerer Supreme.

Thing/Torch was a good pair. Alba should be seen but not heard. Never did see the second FF movie.

No. The comics weren't campy- they were just unapologetically comic books. Period. The movies were just inept. Changing things so radically from the source material, and hiring a cast of mostly undertalented TV people didn't help either. When they inevitably reboot this series, thinking of the original comic books and what they tried to invoke- awe, excitement, a feeling of family- would help quite a bit.

The only actor in the movie I thought was a good casting choice was Michael Chiklis - his Ben Grimm was the one thing that they didn't completely screw up.

THAT'S the problem. If Doom had been played by some nobody actor who was just grateful to be in a frickin' movie, even if it meant no one saw his face, I think Doom would've been handled properly.
