I need some advice. Several of you appear to be roughly close to the position I'm now faced with.

We have several feral cats on our property. Some of them we can't trap to save our lives. So they keep dropping loads of kittens on us.

We are successful in trapping the kittens and socializing them, and so can get them fixed and get them all their shots. But the mommas keep making more babies. We get every unnuetered male in a 5 mile radius moving in to help in the efforts. Thankfully, we are better at catching the males, and normally only get one batch per male prior to them becoming its.

No one will take the kittens, as they are still fairly wild in spite of our efforts to socialize them. They accept us, not other humans.

We live out in BFE, so it is a relatively safe place for the feral cats to be. I know there is a large portion of people who thinks all cats should be inside cats, but our house is already full of cats.

So what do you do when you reach the maximum level of kitties you and your spouse can care for, and yet you know the next wave will show up in a few weeks? The little kittens are so cute, and it's not their fault you can't catch the mothers to spay them.

The prospect of having to turn our backs and let nature run it's course is very disheartening. :/

Slap door traps? Cover em in a towel and put a can of wet food in em. Cats cant resist. They are kinda expensive to buy but pretty cheap and easy to make.

Get help from your local rescue center, they have more means to catch the moms and have them neutered and put them back at your place. So they can live there happily and not have to pop out more kittens.
What you are doing now is the worst really: feeding the lot of them so not so many die. It's sad but true, otherwise most of the kittens would die anyway.

Congrats to Naughahyde Donkey & the missus! I love Caturday; where else can you sit in front of your computer and be crying one second, then laughing the next? I really needed it last week; my oldest kitty, Dinah, was at the vet's with liver failure. Lots of tlc and fluids and meds brought her back, and she's home now. It was touch and go last weekend, though.

In re: the actual article; do you think maybe it was a Black Cat?

valnt9: There must be an aura or a smell around our home. Maybe an invisible sign only cats can see that says "Feline safety zone". I don't know.

It's amazing how many cats have found their way to us over the years. Cats that were hurt, poisoned, dying or just hungry. And each time the responsible action was taken. We were well enough known for our love of cats that the local vets would open their doors 24/7 if we called. We had to end the suffering of several, but if that was the only option, the furbabies were touched, scratched, soft calming words were whispered, and promises of meeting at Rainbow Bridge were given. Even the ones we never saw before were given the same love as the 3 that live with us now.

Thursday I had to let a badly hurt stray go wait for me at the Bridge. We were calling him Thomas D. Stray. He was this year's edition. He showed up on our back porch looking for some food. It took me over a week to find out he was a he. A skinny little guy probably about 6 months old. He was very skitty, very wary of humans. Slowly I won his trust. Eventually he came over to me and rubbed my leg and I reached down and scratched his head. Instant purrbox. He was definitely not a feral cat. He knew human contact. He even gave my neck a nuzzle. And he wanted IN in the worst way. But before he could join our family he had to get a clean bill of health, his shots and be neutered. We had decided to do this when my husband got his paycheck.

I hadn't seen him for 2 days-the food wasn't being eaten, he appeared to have moved on.

Then today (Thursday) he showed up at the front door, jumping the screen and yelling. When I got to him I saw he was wet, matted, then I saw the first of the injuries, his leg was bloodied. I ran for my carrier and a towel. We rushed to the vet.

He was hurt much more badly than I initially realized. It was amazing he even got back to me. But he knew where help was. He knew if anyone would help him it was here.

He didn't get to come home with me. But he isn't in pain anymore either. I promised I would find him at the Bridge.

So here I sit, bawling like a baby over the loss of a little cat who just wanted to be warm and safe and loved.

/sniffle

It's a wonderful thing you do, world needs more people like you.

Also, does anyone know the name of the (hero) Farker that takes in & cares for cats, has a whole set up in his barn? I've stumbled across his profile before but can't remember his name to save my life.
