That story made me laugh right out loud. If this goes green, I'll share my personal Ben Stein story.

Hitler was a cult of personality. So is Obama. That's the only real comparrison I see.

wtf stein? giving a speech in front of 75k people = hitler?

seriously, WTF.

Conservatives are just stymied about the concept of people being proud to support a candidate without having to hold their noses. Their desperation, however, is palpable.

It's not the Democrat's fault you guys can't field a candidate who's not either willfully ignorant, criminally incompetent or, you know, just criminal.

2008-07-24 01:13:47 PM
Both Hitler and Obama have processed oxygen into carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Coincidence? You decide.

2008-07-24 01:14:00 PM
That's two stories in the last hour about different right-wing talking heads drawing comparisons between Obama and Der Fuhrer. Must be the new approved right-wing talking point. It reeks of desperation--I don't think this one is going to have much traction.

2008-07-24 01:14:05 PM
Yes, anyone popular is just like Hitler.

2008-07-24 01:17:51 PM
Safe to assume Stein is a total jerk.

2008-07-24 01:20:36 PM
Ben Stein is increasingly becoming more of a disgrace to "smart guys" everywhere. First it was that staged documentary on ID, Exposed, or whatever it was called and now he's Godwinning left and right.

Ben Stein likely brushed his teeth this morning. That's also something the Führer would have done.

2008-07-24 01:23:37 PM
My what a witty and dry observation.

2008-07-24 01:24:36 PM
And recapped in TFA from far right wing idiot Jonah Goldberg:

"I think one of the things that is decidedly fascistic, or at least just a bad idea, is looking for silver bullets. You know, when Barack Obama campaigns, he's basically saying, 'I'm a silver bullet. I'm going to solve all your problems just by electing me.' FDR, Hitler, all these guys, they basically said, 'All your problems can be solved.' "

So... FDR was bad and also kind of like Hitler? FDR? He's our longest serving President and still widely considered one of our best. Seriously, wtf?

This is just pathetic...seriously. I can only feel pity for people that are this willfully ignorant and self-destructively spiteful.

patrick767: So... FDR was bad and also kind of like Hitler?

To be fair, FDR only rounded up and interned people who were dramatically different than white people.

But Stein's point was that creating a demagogue is dangerous. FDR's New Deal spending didn't bring the country out of the Depression, war loans and war industry manufacturing for Britain did. Germany came out of its economic woes by viciously devaluing its economy, dumping hundreds of millions of Deutsche Marks at France's door to call it square for WWI and then elected a peasant ex-corporal with artistic aspirations who then promptly re-armed and started WWII.

Both were products of casting a charismatic figure in an almost unheard of light of "can do no wrong".

It's going to be heart breaking if Obama gets elected and he doesn't turn out to be our nation's Prince Charming.

Did Ben Stein have a stroke when no one was looking, or has he always been this loony? The man is turning into a goddamned embarrassment.

Stein is pathetic whining old man, now. I watched him on Glenn Beck and the guy is such a sad sack.

Congrats on knowing about that historical fact.

Some of McCain's supporters aren't so sure about what actually happened.

"You don't know, do you?" -- best line.

I'm not arguing that everything FDR did was great and obviously the internment of the Japanese was a terrible violation of their rights. To make even the slightest suggestion that he was like Hitler is ridiculous though, and yes, most historians still consider FDR one of our greatest Presidents. That was Goldberg, not Stein, who brought up FDR.

As for Stein, clearly he could have made his point without going the inflammatory Godwin route. He's just being a dick.

I used to think Ben Stein was funny and interesting. He has gone out of favor in my mind.

It really does have the smell of desperation about it. Has a political movement even Godwinned itself before?

Listening to the Berlin speech right now. Obama just said he is going to stop the oceans from rising and storms from happening.

This sort of bullshiat would positively END the career of any journalist or talking-head in Australia.

Who would ever bother speaking with them again?

Why do people even bother with Ben Stein anyway?

Regardless of how the election goes, thses dicks know the people aren't going to stand for "business as usual", anymore, and they're desperate.

"if we can't bolster McCain, we'll make Obama look as bad as possible.

....yeah.....a Nazi....that's the ticket!"

Taking a morning dump, well, that's something the Führer would have done.

Driving a German automobile, well, that's something the Führer would have done.

Disliking the Frech, well, that's something the Führer would have done.

Using the office of President to illegally spy on political enemies, well, that's something the Führer would have done.

It'll be nice to have a president who doesn't sincerely believe we

Maybe people won too much of Mr. Stein's money and it drove him nuts?

If you are unreservedly enthusiastic about Obama, you don't know very much about him. Support him if you want, but it is incredibly naive to think that you're doing anything other than choosing the lesser of two evils just like in every election.

Surely you've noticed the American right-wing are some of the stupidest people to ever grace modern Western civilization? And there are a lot of them.

The pundits are running scared. At first, their arguement was "He's not popular enough. Only college kids and hippies like him." But his momentum continued to build.

Next the arguement was "Well, he only spews rhetoric, and doesn't have specifics." But he gave specifics and demonstrated he has a grasp of world affairs.

Now he is poised as a real threat to the GOP machine. The crowds prefer to hear real opinions, even if they oppose some of the ideas he presents. But they are listening to a candidate that does not just proffer the same tired sound bites. McCain continues to falter and does not insire people to enthusiasticlly support the Republican cause. So their last gasp at defaming him? "It's a cult of personality. The maniacal visions of a megalomanic who will turn against you like Lenin or Hitler."

The Godwins are the sign that punidits and politicians have realized their livlihoods are at stake. They need to lash out however they can to try to stop their pending defeat.

I've noticed a lot of stupid people, alright, and they aren't confined to the American right wing. But, there are a lot of them. More than they usually know.
