Good news: with their outrageous prices, there is lots of room for competitors to take away their business
Bad news: the only competitor that can make a significant dent is AT&T

This has never happened to me, but the first thing I do when the cable/cable internet goes out is trace the wire from the house all the way down the street as far as I can go.

Because God knows the repair man isn't going to do that.

2008-07-23 01:15:29 PM
Didn't RTFA. But given my mother's experiences (all bad) with Bright House, I'd say this was the result of unmanaged subcontracting.

Comcast raped my cat and charged me for it.

ThatGuyGreg: DirecTV FTW.

Amen to that. We got two HD DVR receivers, two regular receivers, all the movie channels and the Hi Def package for $70/month. No one else came close. I don't know how shiatty it was in the past, but after two years we still have only lost the signal for about ten minutes total during severe thunderstorms.

It's worth it.

You really should read the article. Because that is completely incorrect.

And I like the pompous answer by the spokesman at the end of the article. "We went above and beyond for him". Riiiiight.

Not necessarily. I could be incorrect, but when I read this:

Bayes, a membership specialist for the National Rifle Association, said his problem began before the first service agent came to his home. The new-home specialist should have been able to tell Bayes there was no service to his new home from the first call, he said. None of the many other service representatives caught that error for weeks.

...I immediately think of subcontracted techs. Lack of consistency and poor communication between the field techs and the central office, no ability to audit the guy's service history....all seem symptomatic of subcontracting issues.

Going "above and beyond" now apparently means delivering a basic service weeks after it was promised. Good to see we've set the bar so high.

Wow, nice of the media to start addressing issues that were occurring five years ago. Comcast has always had these problems and now they're getting worse because the company is outsourcing more and more of its operations out. First it was the field techs, and now it's their call center people. The only thing left to guess at is when AT&T and Verizon are going to make their move and finally take out Comcast once and for all.

2008-07-23 02:14:20 PM
I have no experience with Comcast, but I'm very happy with Time Warner out here on the west coast (so far). Everybody in the Midwest though...stay the hell away from Mediacom.

I just got my Comcast cable installed in my new place yesterday, so I'm getting a kick.

I'll stick with Qwest's DSL, though. The interwebs are too important.

2008-07-23 02:15:15 PM
I will never...never....go back to Comcast.

Yes, I have AT&T DSL and yes I understand they probably have a NSA van parked down the street watching all the tentacle porn and Mike Nesmith fansites I visit, but I don't care. I would rather go back to dial-up than go back to Comcast.

"Hate" and "loath" are weak words for how I feel about Comcast and the rejects that work for them.

If DirectTV or the Dish network were options for me I'd switch to them in a heartbeat. Comcast has the monopoly for regular cable services in my area. We tried Qwest's DSL service & found it less than satisfactory & relunctantly switched back to Comcast's broadband service. It took the incompentent Comcast over 2 hours to set up & get up & running a single cable modem. Part of the problem is that Comcast subcontracts out a lot of their installation work to other companies where the installers are given minimal training at best.

Not likely really, ATT was the one that provided the road map for Comcast to become the largest cable company in the US, could have been world really but Comcast sold their holding interest to NTL in the UK

Diogenes: Didn't RTFA. But given my mother's experiences (all bad) with Bright House, I'd say this was the result of unmanaged subcontracting.

When I was having a go-round with the cable company years ago, it was the subcontractor who actually did his job, rather than the company's own techs. The company techs decided on their own that it was too much work to hook me up, and simply kept canceling the work order without explanation.

The subcontractor who finally came out to do it was awesome. He did the work, and did it in a way that was not to code (but which we both agreed was safe) and thus avoided digging up my landlady's asphalt lot.

As part of the deal, my landlady was basically getting free cable, since I was paying for the service and the subcontractor ran a line into her home also (landlady and I agreed to this).

After deciding that I was "cool" and wouldn't rat him out, he also offered to hook me up with illegal premium channels (for free). I declined. :)

Comcast is the worst company. My cable went out in the whole building and they kept telling me it is a wiring issue in my apartment. No cable for 2 weeks. BASTARDS!
I moved and have DirectTV now.

I do interior remodels for a living and last month the house we've been working on for about a year switched to cable. The Comcast guys came by to hook everything up and, really...their job was pretty easy on this house. There was a five foot crawlspace under the house that they were making a fuss about going in to. We just told them to get everything ready and we'll run the wire. Little biatches didnt want to get dirty...so they went ahead and let me (a 19 yr old girl) do it instead.

The ones over here are really a bunch of women. I want that job...just chose what I dont want to do so I wont get dirty.

2008-07-23 02:27:44 PM
It is a shame that more people don't use broadband over power lines. I have great speed and less downtime than anyone I know using ANY cable TV provider.

You got that right.

I'd rather be lit on fire than ever go back to Charter.

2008-07-23 02:28:58 PM
Yeah, I remember after Katrina, we needed all new wiring from the hub to our home, and we had three separate techs come out (Cox Communications, ComCast doesn't service on this side of the lake). Two were contractors, and one worked directly for Cox Communications. Everytime a tech came out, they insulted the prior tech and pretty much reversed whatever the last tech did.

/Contractors =/= same training
//"That last tech was an idiot." FTW
