this kid probably deserved it. he'd probably pushed the guy too far. but unfortunately, this kid will feed his parents (and anyone else who is listening) a few lines of complete bullshiat and his parents will think the whole situation is wrong and get the guy fired... sad.

Preposterous! Discipline is necessary. I had my ass paddled on more than a few occasions and you bet your ass that I learned from it!

One time in third grade I was so unruly that the teacher tied my ass down to a chair in the middle of the classroom with a jump-rope. After a few minutes of still thinking I was a smart-ass, I gave up and became nice and tame again. Again, a learning experience.

This principle should get the hero tag. I remember a couple kids in my 4th grade class who should've been handcuffed. Come to think of it, the teacher did tie one of them up one day.

Handcuffs aren't necessarily cruel unless one is constrained in them for a long period of time.

Eh. Sounds like the kid was an asshole. I don't completely condone what the principle did, but some parents don't even friggin' care about their kids nowadays. Sometimes it can be farking impossible to discipline kids, especially if you're not the parent and can't impose stronger punishments on them.

I hope they just investigate the thing and find out what the kid had been up to. Like someone else said, the article just ignored whatever the hell the kid had been doing.

Exactly what kind history does a nine year old have? I mean it's not like he's selling crack to the other 3rd graders.

I was all for the principal until I read the kid was nine. If this were some 17 year old punk taking things to the final straw I could almost see it, but a fourth grader? That's a bit much.

I'm all for corporeal punishment usually. I had a relative fired from a teaching job because he pulled a kid off another student whom he was choking and slamming his head into the floor.

And as a teacher I love public humiliation and find it to be a very affective teaching tool. "Hello Billy. Here's your paper. And look! You managed to spell your name right this time! Great job!"

ZZeuss I was well aquainted with my middle school principal's TKE paddle. The only thing it taught me was to be sure to loosen your butt cheeks just before it hit.

If they dont fire him and take away his teaching certificate, it reinforces all the stereotypes of teachers as marginally intelligent control freaks.


See, that's the problem. Do you want a principle that's actively concerned with the development of children and will do their own judgement calls? Or some paper pusher that cries 'No tolerance! Hands off!' and expels the kid for every infraction.

The problem is they dont expel for every infraction. I just read an article in an Arizona paper about teachers that cant get transferred. Seems that after students threatened teachers (ie "If I had a gun, Id shoot you.") the students were removed from the "normal" school and sent to the secondary school next door. When the teachers asked for a transfer, it was denied.

Statistics say kids are doing the same stupid things theyve always done, but I guess from my personal experience I have to disagree. When I was growing up there were 0 school shootings by kids and 1 or 2 by wacked out adults with AK-47 knockoffs. I think a major part of it is parents either not caring or not being around.

That particular instance may be a little off, but I certainly do believe that they should bring out that old school 80 year old nun whipcrack paddle your butt style of instant punishment, yeah.

I agree schools should have more rights to punishment than they do today. Those rights should not include bondage and humiliation. Certainly not for a 9 year old.
