(Reuters)   Construction resumes on North Korea's "Hotel of Doom"; however, critics say it's not nearly as good as the one with the cup or the one that melts your face. Doomy pic included   (news.yahoo.com ) divider line

And the plot is still better than the last Indiana Jones movie too.

2 Billion dollars to finish it? Yeah, in a country where the masses eat grass to survive, that is a great way to doom them to further hardship. What an asshat.

I predict a massive opening of North Korea to western money the same way China did it. It too is an unexploited market with a captive consumer base.

Kim really needs to lighten up. Someone send him a copy of 200 Motels and Baby Snakes.

A 3000 room hotel in a city that basically no one is allowed to visit. That's some gud thninkin.

Esquire is full of crap. I think the building looks cool, kinda neo-deco.

I guess they won't be needing IDCLIP just yet.

Is it building the hotel just to be ironic? Is North Korea the new hipster douche of southeast Asia?

A hotel that most people can't afford to stay in with antennas for cell phones that nobody is allowed to own in a country that people can't visit? Yeah, sounds good to me.

"If this is the worst building in the world, the runners up are in Vegas and Shanghai," said Giberti.

That seems unnecessarily harsh. I don't know much about Shanghai, but I don't recall many dangerous, mostly-unfinished, unusable, multi-billion dollar structures in Vegas. Sure, that city's filled with expensive eyesores, but at least they're functional and interesting eyesores.

Who would have thought they actually stole the design plan from 1984? Orwell must be rolling over in his grave laughing over this.

Client No. 9: Esquire is full of crap. I think the building looks cool, kinda neo-deco.

There are other reasons for a building to be "the worst building in the world":

FTA: Yonsei's Lee and other architects said there were questions raised about whether the hotel was structurally sound and a few believed completing the structure could cause it to collapse.

Also, from ABC:

"There are no windows, pipes, lighting, fixtures, or the North Korean version of the AAA seal of approval hanging out front.

"Nothing is inside the place but black shadows. A crane still sits at the top."

I know how they could get some funding to finish it...

put giant coca-cola logos on the side...massive advertizing...or perhaps a geisha woman eating a tiny snack...

One of the most informative, entertaining pieces (new window) I've ever read about N. Korea, from an American athlete allowed a brief visit. Creepiest thing- pictures of huge highways stretching into the distance, traveled by one car.

Read up a little bit on the history of the hotel as well as the historical/social/political/economical context of its construction. Only then will you truly understand what an absolutely, galactically, and monumental F*@kl this project is.

The Ryugyong is, without doubt, a black eye in Kim Jong-il's otherwise exemplary record as a vicious ruler who will go to any lengths to cover up his blunders.

A pity, really...

Why do people see large dominating structures and call them phallic symbols? I never look at a pillar or building and think "Man, look at that schlong." You people have dick on the brain all day, doncha?

Manpace: Why is it that so many cities want to have giant phallic symbols dominating their skylines?

From an engineering and space-allocation standpoint, building a ginormous vagina would be a challenge.

I'm not really sure how anybody's expected to build a skyscraper that isn't vaguely phallic.

Just because American's can't visit doesn't mean the rest of the world can't. Places like North Korea, Cuba and Lybia all receive visitors each and ever day. Just not Americans (or, at least, not Americans who fly directly to any of these places).
