Was the Vote for Rory thing only a year ago? I could swear it was at least two.

When are companies going to learn that the internet is just a massive echo chamber for mankind's most unholy thoughts and desires? Deciding anything by internet consensus is simply a recipe for disaster.

I clicked around a few of the submissions (^) the other day and the best one could probably be termed "auditory rape".

The CBC are doing a piss poor job publicizing it. They should just hire Rush to do something instrumental or something. Maybe call up the Shuffle Demons or The Hanson Brothers. This contest will end badly.

Last year, it was the infamous Vote for Rory campaign, in which fans nearly succeeded in sending wholly unremarkable Vancouver Canucks utility defenceman Rory Fitzpatrick to the 2007 NHL All-Star Game by choking the online ballot box with write-in votes.

Pffft. We did succeed. The League just wouldn't own up to it. Buzzkills.

And the CBC isn't going to let this thing win, either. But man, that'd be so awesome if it did.

After Don Cherry finishes kicking Europe's ass singlehandedly, he will compose his own, better theme song. He will then remind those goddamn women to keep their eyes on the puck unless they're directly behind the glass.

I nominate "HOME FOR A REST" as the new theme for HNIC.

Canadian
Rocking
Drunken

You can't have a bad time when you're singing along with SOTW.

That's a winner right there.

I really like that song for an opening credits type deal. I also like Cheese by Ween, so I know I'm not the guy you want in your focus group.

Eh, we could just go with Stompin Tom's Hockey Song.

'Hello out there, we're on the air, it's hockey night tonight!'

I still can't believe that we're having to front the bill for this contest when they could've just paid the amount of money that they're using as a prize to license the song longer.

CTV / TSN outbid the CBC on this one. In the long run, I do not think it is a big deal.

Lord Zardoz: CTV / TSN outbid the CBC on this one. In the long run, I do not think it is a big deal.

I'll admit having no idea of the full backstory to the negotiations - but at least from the stories in the paper...

CBC fails to renew license.
CBC declares negotiations at an impasse, proceeding with stupid theme contest with contest award of a value that was larger than what they offered license holder to renew. (If I recall, the quote was a 'near' six figure offer to buy full rights to it, as opposed to continued licensing)
CTV/TSN steps in and announces that they have licensed the song for their broadcasts.

2008-07-17 09:13:36 PM
Not renewing the HNIC song was an assine move by the CBC, and I've heard the same rumors as Caeldan about the negotations as well.

No, really. I LOVE having my arts money go to large stripes of paint and bad ameture porn done with soapbubbles.
I'd love for the CBC to give me one reason to take this seriously.

I like the Stomin' song, I say they go with that. If that doesn't happen, then I kinda like the suggestion of Home For A Rest. IF THAT DOESN'T FLY, then I hope this wins, because it will just show what an embarrassment the CBC is and will either a) get its act together and listen to what we, the paying public, wants or b) close down all together.

This is one of the greatest things i have ever seen. Hahaha. It would be so awesome if that could actually be the theme song. Like if it was up to a vote.

/I'm sure they wouldn't use it, even if we all DID vote for it.

2008-07-18 08:43:03 AM
Well, if they don't go for The Hockey Song, then I think Hockey Scores is the next logical choice.

2008-07-18 10:57:20 AM
I liked some of the versions of that tune they had a few years ago - "The place will be rocking 'cause it's Saturday night". Colin James I think did a great version.

can't seem to find it anywhere.

1. The song will get played on TSN all the time. It's a non-story that's whipped into a GIGANTIC PATRIOTIC STORY by the CBC.

2. Stompin' Tom for sure. They could use Sudbury Saturday Night for the bumpers. "The girrrrls are playyyin' bingo, and the boyyyys are gettin' stinko..."

Tofino: 1. The song will get played on TSN all the time. It's a non-story that's whipped into a GIGANTIC PATRIOTIC STORY by the CBC.

pfft. The story is that they're wasting our money on some ridiculous other theme when they already had one!

Sarcasm aside, that actually WAS my submission. I'm probably not the only one to do it, either.
