October 10th cannot come fast enough.

Granted it means we'll probably start 0-1 but I'd rather watch my team lose a hockey game than watch another farking minute of baseball.

Subby, the only thing your Lightning have going for them is LeCav and The Mulleted One. The New York Rangers will roll right over them.

Book it. Done.

Has anyone checked out their schedules yet? They do seem a little bit more balanced with east/west coast schedules. Of course I have only checked two teams so for whatever that's worth...

I'm trying to find something to say, but the release of next season's schedule just doesn't inspire comment. Except for that. And that. And that. And....yeah, now I'm just being annoying.

Smell the Glove: Has anyone checked out their schedules yet? They do seem a little bit more balanced with east/west coast schedules. Of course I have only checked two teams so for whatever that's worth...

They went to a more reasonable format this year.
6 division games each
4 conference games each
At least 1 non-conference game per team
And 3 home/home series with an out of conference.

Plus, in an awesome twist the Red Wings AND the Avalanche play the Panthers in Florida this year. So far both of those games have been immensely entertaining at the Bank Atlantic Center.

Well I guess that explains it. I knew they were backing off the divisional games a little bit this year but I didn't know there was a format spelled out.

I didn't HATE last years schedule necessarily, just that I wanted to see more Western Conf teams play for my own selfish reasons. Watching the Pens and Capitals made up for it a little bit.

Sens close out the season playing Toronto in Toronto... so that could be fun since the Leafs like to try to wait till the last minute to fail to make the playoffs.

2008-07-17 06:08:25 PM
Though, a quick scan of the end of the season shows at least a couple back to back games with travelling involved...

Did the NHL not learn from this season? First 10 and last 10(or maybe 15) games of the season should not have teams playing back-to-back games. That was one of the reasons Carolina missed the playoffs I think. Carolina and Washington played the same last 3 or 4 opponents, and each of those opponents played them back-to-back and would beat the Canes, and then lose to the Caps cause they were tired.

I dunno, it was an exciting finishiathought. I don't think the Canes were too tired, did they not put up about 7 zillion shots in the loss that booted them out of the playoffs?

Dude, the Devils are playing the Islanders in the first game, I think you meant 1-0.

I can't wait until the Lightning come to the Devils (Nov. 5th) when Melrose comes to Newark. I will be sure to go to the game.

Sweet. Every Eastern conference team is on the schedule.
PHI, TB, and ATL twice.

That's all I ask for. Playing Calgary and Vancouver 8 times a season is just retarded.

Wasn't the Canes that were tired (they'd get a day off between their games) it was the shared opponents that the Canes and Caps had - essentially gave the Caps an easier end to their schedule.

ie
Mon - Canes vs A
Tues - Caps vs A
Wed - Canes vs B
Thurs - Caps vs B
etc...

That's how the season finished out there - I'm not a Canes fan by any stretch, but thought it kinda sucked for them that they basically got to hand the Caps the last playoff spot (and 3rd seed).

Yikes, the Sabres only play three home games in the entire month of January. Three home games and 10 road games that month.

Think I'll go to Sabres @ Devils on Dec. 13th. I've been wanting to see the Devils new arena (yes, I'm aware that it's in Newark, but still).

It was always fun to play the Habs and Leafs 8 times a year when we were beating them, but I'm glad I get to see the western teams in my building at least once a year.

Careful what you say, I don't think we have the team to brag with this year. Not saying we aren't good, but we're still missing some pieces. Stillman >:(

I see what you're saying now. I still thought it was a fun finish. All the Canes had to do was beat Florida and they were in. The put up some 40something shots and lost like 4-3 or 5-4. I can't remember for sure now but it was close. They still had a shot if the Capitals lost their next game but they didn't. It was pretty much as exciting as the South East division got all year.

I believe I read on a forum somewhere that said last year that Centre Ice Online televised some pre-season game that Anaheim or LA did across the pond last year (and for free too!) So hopefully that'll happen this year again.

At the very least, I'm sure through one of those online services we watched the games streaming on - a European station will have it.

caeldan ANA - LA Overseas game(s) were regular season.

Things that surprised me about the NHL schedule

1) The Leafs don't play EVERY F*CKING SATURDAY (thank you science)
2) The Sharks play on Hockey Night 3 times, with back to back saturdays in Feb/March
3) It really is that much closer to September.

Yeah I remember that - but I believe that one of them had a pre-season game with a Euro league team last year... I just can't recall who it was. But that CI Online carried the pre-season game.

The Leafs seem to play about as many Sat as normal, it just seems the actually get the occasional road game this year on a Saturday. (They play every Sat in Feb, Mar, Apr). Actually in 2009 the only Sat they don't play seems to be Jan 17th.

I heard a rumor that there was supposed to be a three way deal with the kings and and Chicago..bringing Happy-bulin annnddd some young centre man to Ottawa...leaving ottawa to LA would be gerbs and mes-zero and going to chi town would be kopitar. I think it was in one of the Ottawa papers.

Yeah, that one was Brennan after smoking something funny.

If there was a 3-way deal in the works, its been nixed at this point as the current rumours are that LA has backed out of whatever the deal was.

Still plenty of CHI-OTT rumours flying around, though supposedly Murray's called up FLA again and pursuing all his options.

I don't know... I almost get the feeling that for some reason Sens management are leaking false rumours after the whole Jason Williams non-signing. Heard him on XM204 today and it sounded like he had never even considered Ottawa as a destination, combined with denials from his agent - but some of the bloggers who have had a near spotless track record got sucked in by that one big - to the point where they were describing a Nylander-type situation having occurred.

We were in the mix for Williams? Man, being in Montreal blows - I'm so out of the loop with all my sens stuff. Not that I don't have complete faith in Murray, but I'm still not convinced we have enough right now to do anything special. I still think we're missing guys on the back end, and we don't have that much depth up front. Sure, Smith is a good addition with character and grit and yadda yadda but we just aren't the same scary ass team we used to be.

There are a few decent names left which would be nice to see added but it seems that it should be more of a rebuilding type year - however that works.

Oh, you missed that entire saga?

It was supposedly 'done deal' that Williams had signed with Ottawa at 1.9M/3yrs (ie nhlscap.com had it listed, the site manager even had said that his 'league source' had seen the faxed paperwork). The term really didn't make a whole lot of sense to be honest, but supposedly the announcement was being held off presumably until a trade with Chicago involving Vermette and Neil), in return for Barker and Skille (and some balance of prospects/picks to even the sides out).

However, then came a report that Atlanta had signed Williams to a 2.2M/1yr contract which TSN pulled off and on its site for several hours before leaving it up with a '?' in the headline. The next morning the Atlanta signing was confirmed.

The bloggers who had reported with certainty that this was a done deal were rather upset, and said that based on their sources there was a couple upset GMs and that Ottawa had been Nylander'd.

The story was that both Atlanta and Ottawa had faxed in signed paperwork, but the Williams camp had asked Ottawa to void their deal, and they agreed to - so the Atlanta deal got processed. The alternate story was that both were in the league office, and that the Atlanta paperwork got processed first - and so that was the official deal.

2008-07-17 08:27:05 PM
Oh I forgot to add back in Williams side.

Kevin Lee (ya, I know) - said that he had spoken with Williams' agent about the whole thing, and was shown proof that Ottawa had in fact, never talked to them about Williams.

And then today on the radio, the Power Play guys had Williams on... asked him that of the rumours how many teams actually were talking to him (at one point the rumours were that 26 teams were talking to him). Williams just chuckled and said that rumours are just that, and that when he saw the Atlanta offer - that was the one that he felt was the best fit. Talked to the GM and coach briefly about what they expected his role to be there, and said that was the contract for him - because he hadn't been offered anything by Chicago yet, and wasn't going to wait any longer when he had this offer.

The more likely major name coming out of LA was actually Frolov in the rumours that were kicking around.
