OK, so we are all going to make nice.

Does everyone remember how things turned out the last time we had an embassy in Tehran? That regime refused to honor the sanctity of an embassy, something even the Nazi's generally respected.

Hopefully our esteemed State Department has thought this through. Having a much larger military presence in the area probably makes it safer.

I'm in Tehran right now and have to say, liberal minded and educated Iranian are pretty excited about this. Unfortunately I don't know any conservative fundis here so I can't say what they think about this, but I'm sure it would be safe to assume their default choice.

I would bring my Hostage Survival kit just to be safe

Because those defense and oil companies aren't making enough money yet.

On Sunday, President Amhmoud Ahmadinejad suggested Iran would consider any proposal by the United States for a U.S. interests section in the Islamic Republic, should one be forthcoming.

This surprises me.

Joke headline aside, this is great news.

Who knew the Bush Administration could make some correct calls?

ext step: Iranian election in 2009. Hopefully more moderates get a oothold in the political process and these (albiet small) steps of diplomacy continue further.

If this happens (or even sooner, looking at it very optimistically) there's a real chance of the US and Iran reaching some sort of agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program.

klymen: I'm in Tehran right now and have to say, liberal minded and educated Iranian are pretty excited about this

Obviously. My family is psyched about this as well.

Ooh, and go to Nayeb if it's still there. Best. Kabob. Evar.

Diogenes: This surprises me.

It shouldn't. At some point you have to embrace something you might not agree with, but the vast majority of your people do.

Small steps... this is how things can get better.

Does anyone see the irony in the fact that the current dictator/leader in Iran was one of the hostage takers the last time we had a "diplomatic presence in Tehran?"

Kind of hard to see beyond it. I hope this is a step in the right direction, and not an opportunity for (further) disaster.

only kind of kidding

Now all they have to do is build a tunnel under the embassy that leads to Iraq, and we can start this war by surprise!

Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along.

We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: "Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided." We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

I'm glad to see that my prediction that only people people who watch fox news are gullible/trolly enough to believe that we were going to bomb Iran for no good reason. Bombing Iran was the stupidest media creation ever.

You think we're going to make nice? While Bush may be dumb, Cheney is not. The perfect excuse to go to war will be, "We tried to talk with them, but diplomacy failed. Sadly we have one option left."

Maybe the idea is we send over embassy personnel knowing they'll be kidnapped, thus providing a clear pretext for going to war.

This is very good news for everybody (except the hawks and hardliners on both sides). I did not expect this to happen with this administration, but I welcome their awakening.

I don't know how McCain will play this. Will he modify his position, or will he say this is wrong and essentially make Pat Buchanan's joke about him "making Cheney look like Gandhi" true?

Yes.. something I came here to say too. I think that's exactly what this is. Never mind 'hostage survival kits', I think everyone will need SPF 1,000,000 before this is done.

Perfect liberal moonbat thinking. Argue and whine for something. Get it, then argue that what you're getting is actually a conspiracy.

I think something like 70% of Iranians weren't even born during the hostage crisis.

We're going to have to give them a pass - they seriously had nothing to do with it.

It would be like going to Japan today and getting dissed for the nuclear strikes...but you're only 30. WTF? Not your fault.
