FTA: When thousands of delegates converge in the Mile City in August, downtown Denver won't look exactly like it does now.

Guess it isn't high any more.

I feel sorry for the theater employees who are going to have to clean up after them.

Some one explain to me why the summer population for homeless in Denver is different than the population other times of the year. Yes, I realize winter is cold in Denver, but if these people are together enough to travel, why can't they obtain proper jobs and housing. Every year in NOLA they come in the spring when the weather is nice and the streets are full of tourists but leave before summer hits, its hot as hell, and all the tourists are gone. It's not that I don't care about those that are truly without means, but for most of these people being a bum is a lifestyle choice. I'm sorry but I have little sympathy for those that choose never to work because they think it makes them underground off the grid heroes, I'd like it if they did sweep those people up in jail and make them do what most of us do everyday support ourselves and work.

I very rarely rant/
just fed up

Because for every homeless person who belongs in a mental hospital, there are 20 who don't. Some people legitimately need help. Most need to get a job

The one good thing about post 9/11 security:

Panhandlers, hare krishnas, and charity employees are no longer allowed inside the terminals at LAX. Back in December '99 I was flying to Hawaii, and this one guy was asking for cash....apparently, he needed a plane ticket to Denver. ORLY? He had no bags, and was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts....not exactly prepared for that winter weather in Colorado.

/He should have said Phoenix....at least that would have been somewhat believable.

Bingo. As a cop, I have plenty of contact with the "homeless" in my jurisdiction. I once asked a group of "homeless" people sleeping in a park why they don't go to a local shelter. I was told that the shelter requires you to change your bedsheets in the morning and help cook breakfast. They were too lazy to do that and preferred to sleep in the park and go to the shelter just for the free food. Also, they don't let you drink at the shelter.

Once saw a lady talking to a bunch of "homeless" people and stopped to see what was up. She told me she wanted to help these "poor people" and offered to bring them stuff to make sandwiches. They told her if she made the sandwiches they'd eat them, but they didn't want to make them. They could go down the street to the shelter and get sandwiches already made. She was in shock that these "poor hungry people" would turn down food just because they didn't want to do the slightest amount of work involved.

For fark's sake, if we can do something for them when the whole country is pointing news camera's here, Why can't we do something the whole freakin year? Something real, not just sending them to the movies. And I'm not talking about the Boulder college kids hanging out on Pearl Street. Some of these people have serious problems. If we can spend billions liberating a country halfway around the world, we should be able to spare a few hundred million addressing problems at home.

I've seen bums in Hawaii...those guys must be the kings of the homeless world. Plenty of coconuts, and the weather never gets cold.

Countless billions have already been spent on poverty, and it hasn't done jack shiat.

Ahh, you may be right. This particular case just pisses me off a bit, though. Kinda sweeping it under the rug.

No matter how much cheesecake they bring, it will never be enough.

...Because they'll eat it all themselves.

...because they're fat.

For many of them it's a choice. If you gave them a million dollars they'd still live on the streets. Yeah, some of them are mentally disabled, but most are alcoholics or drug addicts that have given up ever being "normal." Some are just plain bums that don't want to have any resposibility of any kind.

Well, we'll have a candidate who represents real change this fall. Let's see how he does with the money.

The City of Denver is using precious Batman tickets for the homeless instead of eager fans who want to see this movie. What a waste of pork.

Instead the City of Denver should educate the homeless by making them watch a documentary on the Chicago Seven or on the 1968 Democratic Convention.

So, I've lived in this city for 22 years, paid taxes, helped the economy, generally been a good citizen and the teenage asshats always pestering me for money on the 16th Street Mall are getting the freebies to Batman, the zoo and museum?

I hadn't planned to go downtown and start a riot...

The homeless will be offered free movie passes, tickets to the Denver Zoo, museums, and other cultural facilities.

You can lead a horticulture but you cant make her think.

Yeah, but you could always afford those things. This is to help those who don't have the ability or the inclination to save up for things like that. Perhaps if they see those things, they'll realize what they need to do to get those kinds of things for themselves.
