Sounds like diplomacy from Civ4...where I'd be playing like the Taliban. Be chummy, make deals, then BETRAY AND A ATTACK! Oh silly AI, being tricked by my diplomacy.

In Civ3 I could attack, seize several cities, barter a peace to mend my wounds, and then invade again several turns later. Oh the good old days.

Back when they used to run those commercials about how buying drugs sponsored terrorists, I would tell everyone I know about how the Bush administration's anti-drug efforts involved giving millions *directly to* the terrorists.

We already knew that in the "with us or against us" world our own leader is dead set against us. More proof is hardly necessary.

Ultimately, it is really the Democrat Party's fault Bush gave the Taliban this money.

I read about 1/2 of the book 'The Taliban' around 2004. It was published in 2000 and was very damning about how the US and american corporations kept playing with the Taliban. Apparently the US would have recognized their regime instantly if the Taliban would have allowed a pipeline right down the center of the country. They preferred (I think) a Brazilian, and the whole thing went to pot.

I read in June of 2001 in the India Times that there was a plan to launch an offensive in Afghanistan before 'the first snows of winter' - roughly early October.

The more you read into it, the more you wonder ...

That's the stupidest term I've heard yet. "Pre-9/11 mindset"? What the freak is that supposed to mean when "a major event" was planned well long before 2001.

The U.S. was in the middle east bombing for a long time before 9/11 happened. So, "pre-9/11 mindset" is just for ignorant Americans (excluding presidents).

We were spending $4 billion a year preventing terrorist attacks on us before 9/11, so "Pre-9/11 mindset" doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

The Taliban used to have an official website back in like 1999 or so. It made for very compelling reading.

They fancy themselves leaders in women's rights, and can explain in great detail why.

Mavis Leno led efforts to have the US govt oppose the Taliban. Hillary Clinton was the first congressperson to help. The Bush administration, at the time, didn't care about anything but tax cuts.

The figures were much higher than $43 million...

"The United States has been the single largest donor of humanitarian aid for Afghans for the past several years. In 2000, the United States contributed a total of $113 million in humanitarian aid to Afghans, both inside Afghanistan and in refugee camps in neighboring countries. In 2001, the aid level has already exceeded $184, accounting for some 300,000 tons of American food sent to Afghanistan this year." US State Deparment October 15,2001

Yeah, but they were still a bunch of Islamo-fascist, woman-hating, torturing, maiming, intolerant, terrorist-sponsoring war mongers.

Oh, you mean because al-Qaeda hadn't blown up the WTC YET. Oh, ok, that makes it alright. My bad.

I researched this a few years ago, and IIRC the aid was actually given to an international relief organization, not the Taliban. The effect was much the same, and Bush is still a traitor who kills our troops for kicks.

He pointed out that the cited story in the Kos article was discredited as false as far back as 2001. He was completely ignored. So, I made a joke about us needing some good Bush bashing around here. Hate the President for whatever reason you want but at least use honest attacks, not smears.

Hmmm.. October 15, 2001.. I think there was something going on then.... That might have involved giving aid to lots of Afghans. hmm what was that now?
