Oh, those wacky Amish! You never know what hijinks they'll be up to next.

Exactly what does a sign like this do?

If one cannot recognize a horse drawn buggy until you can read a sign, you have a serious problem.

On the lighter side.... I used to be all over Missouri's 2 lane roads.... There is an Amish community near by and I had to remain vigilant.

One time I popped over a rise and there was a buggy... i was able to slow down in time, being the vigilant driver i am.....

It had a bumper sticker on the back of the buggy.

"Powered by environmentally clean system. Caution: DO NOT STEP IN EXHAUST!"

I then realized the Amish do have a sense of humor.

The Amish just have low self esteem. What they need is for someone to make a really kick ass movie about an Amish guy who knows kung-fu and wanders the countryside bringing justice to ordinary people who suffer at the hands of a corrupt society.

When th cops come they'll just build a barn around them and they'll be foiled.

i think they object to the flashing light requirement. from what little i know, they tend to not want to use electricity for anything

which is pretty hypocritical, as they have no problem with hiring people to drive them around in cars

to each their own. and been there, done that real shaman. i used to ride a motorcycle across state on some back roads just for fun, and learned early on to be cautious of the buggies. the first time i crested a hill to see the back end of a buggy, all i could think as i locked up the brakes was that i was going to hit the back of it and fly headfirst straight up a horse's ass. that pretty much cured me of my hill-jumping tendencies

Actually, I'm sure they would prefer if we didn't pave the hell out of the countryside, but as they're willing to let it slide, I'm OK with it.

Seriously, doesn't "horse and buggy" pretty much define "slow-moving vehicle?" Isn't that like putting a "Caution: May be sharp" label on a carving knife?

The Amish in Indiana go along with the highly-reflective orange triangle. I think it's the 2005 flashing lights law that's causing issues.

I expect that as long as these Amish men agree to the triangle, the lights thing will be amended or go away.

I came up on an Amish buggy after dark that had the smv sign. If it wasn't for that sign I probably would have never seen the black buggy until it was too late. They had no lights.

Unfortunately many Amish folks deem any vehicle lighting too ostentatious. They also like to drive their buggies at or around sunset. Add a few drunken teenagers cruising the back roads and you have squished Amish. It used to happen around South Eastern Ohio with alarming regularity.

Megain: i think they object to the flashing light requirement. from what little i know, they tend to not want to use electricity for anything

That's not entirely true. They don't want to be connected to the electric grid like the rest of us are. But the Amish I know in Ohio still have some sort of electricity. I know a couple chicken farmers who have a whole series of batteries set up to run the lights in the chicken house. Wind generator keeps them charged. Still, no heavy electrical stuff like fridges and stoves. Those are usually propane powered.

The Ohio Amish have the reflective triangle on the back of the buggies, but I'm not sure about the flashing light. I bet Jacob Yoder is behind think. Because 1 in every 4 Amish males are named Jacob Yoder.

Well if they don't have the sign on an overcast night with no streetlights nearby you can practically hit the thing before you see it.

/understand the desire of the Amish to be left alone
//just wish on the road safety stuff they'd go a little further
///fortunately most have the brains to NOT take the buggy out in the fog

A standard slow-moving vehicle placard is orange and reflective, and will be visible a lot earlier than a black buggy in low light conditions.

It seems pretty simple though. If you wish to drive a vehicle on a public road, you must meet certain safety requirements.

My sister lives across the street from Amish and they are all around Lancaster county in PA (where I use to live, but family still does).

Amish "break" their rules all the time. I think there is new/old Amish. The farm across from my sister has phones and electric motors...etc.

I just never understood why they decided to stop around 1850 technology. why not 1600 or 1900. The biggest gripe I would have is the tractors that don't have rubber (too worldly) and their tires tear up the roads....not to mention their horses' shoes.

If they want to be on PUBLIC roads, then they have to have vehicles capable of being on those roads. I don't think flashing lights says "HEY, look at me"...it's more like "HEY, don't run into me"

2008-07-14 11:46:58 PM
If they keep forcing them to use this the Amish are so totally going to complain about this on their blog.

Yeah... pretty sure it's the flashing lights part they object to, although some old- order Amish groups won't display bright colors. The solution they came up with in Ohio is a larger reflective triangle in silver, white and dark red. It contrasts with the black on the buggy, and it's big enough to shine like a beacon when headlights hit it. Very few Amish are THAT strict, though, and most have the standard orange and yellow reflective triangle on the backs of their buggies.

And yes, the Amish tend to have a strange relationship with technology. They cannot use it for pleasure, for the most part, and they have to make it at least somewhat inconvenient, but certain uses of diesel engines, generators, and batteries for industrial purposes are allowed.

Some here (Illinois) seem to have gas-powered generators for doing laundry, and can have electricity and phones on the property for business but not into the home.

They do use orange triangles lights on their buggies (not flashing ones).

The Amish are notorious for their abuse of fellow animals.

Unsurprisingly, sex abuse is rampant.

I'm not expert either, but a previous poster mentioned something about "not using technology for personal use". I think that is the basic gist amongst the more tolerant ones. It's ok to use it to compete commercially, as long as it doesnt make life too easy, but you can't watch tv.

To each their own. I would still join and work my ass off on a farm if I could have sex with whomever was up for it.

Some Amish have electricity for their income source, and most communities will have a communal phone booth they can use when they need to make phone calls. They aren't anti-technology, just anti-vanity. Most of the things the Amish do are to keep members from being vain and 'worldly'. Not because electricity is evil.

They don't seem bothered about using the 'too wordly' roads paved by modern methods.
